Minotaur: Using your head for thinking is stupid and a waste of time! *Casually Solves a Rubix cube*
Have not watched the video yet but am stoked to find context once i do
Okay from the description of "love solving puzzles" i was more thinking Zelda dungeons, but hey this be the perfect reason to play an minotaur artificer with their expertise in navigator's tools
Which I'm curious, "How"??
@Patrick Dees Muscle memory. Big muscle = big memory
Thor, "The brain is a muscle. So is my bicep, and my abs, and my calfs, and my thieghs, and my glutes. Basically, I'm all muscle. Which means I'm also all brain." -- Also Minotaurs. :P
I read an old dragon magazine article featuring a man who was enslaved by a minotaur chief. He avoided being eaten or sacrificed because he was very good at making puzzles, and the chief loved solving them so much he kept him alive and even protected him from other minotaurs. Could be a good reason to keep a party alive if they lose a fight to minotaurs, assuming there is a high intelligence character in the group that can make puzzles or riddles.
Reminds me of the old story of the person who avoided being eaten by telling a fascinating story. They'd never end the story so the fiend would begrudgingly let them live. Forgot how that story ended.
Or you can be a master alcohol brewer.
It's basically the framing story of Arabian Nights.
Scheherazade tells stories to the sultan who beheads his wifes after one night because he never wanted to be betrayed by a wife again like his first with did him.
But she never finished a story and always ends the night with a new half finished story.
Basically it's a folk tail collection, some stories went very popular in the western world too, like Alladin and Alibaba
@@marcst3199 Yes I also saw the similarity. Although there the sultan eventually falls in love with the girl. The minotaur makes clear he's gonna eat the man once he can no longer think of puzzles (the man eventually escapes).
@@Leviathan4000 yeah, it's not a carbon copy but I guess Arabian nights are kind of an inspiration to many stories of that kind
I think baby minotaurs have great potential to be adorable
I mean it's a caf, how couldn't it be?
The fact that the one in the thumbnail has a pacifier around its neck is ridiculously adorable lol
So...50% Veal?
You're right :P
Do you think some other race would take in a baby female and raise her?🥺

Very cool
Which is kinda strange, as the ocean is a constant shifting setting, so their normal reliance on smells would be at a major disadvantage.
The last episode of this will be “What they don’t tell you about MrRhexx”
That would make for a great April fool's vid!
He is an avatar of the recently elevated to godhood Elminster? Or an aspect of Vecna?
Holy shit, your profile picture is hilarious! Coming to America, but with Trump in place ov Hall...wonderful.
Surprised Trump has not freaked out on you and called you a joke or fake news lol
I kidnappedeight mwn, one of them can be heard as muffled screams in some of my videos, i skinned my cat, and gazing directly into my eyes will force you to make a D16constituition saving throw. On a success, you go blind. On a failure, your bones gain the physical qualities of large pipe cleaners.
I will never forget that one time when my campain took us to Sigil and a group of around 13 minotaurs were harrasing us at one of the inns.
I guess telling them that "I am not scared of the meat in my plate, why should I be scared of a herd of walking cows with an Axes?" was a quick way to learn that Sigil is a place where everything is crazy and strong. We barely escaped due to smart use of magic and the DM mercy that not one of those minotaurs was a caster.
Whoops.
How did they attack you without getting Lady Of Pain'd?
@@ee4724 I mean, the Lady of Pain don´t care until you start messing with Sigil itself, or worshiping her, or talk about her too much. She doesn't care about the inhabitants.
I already knew the setting (Planescape), but the GM gave the rest of the party a pretty straight forward example of the place by getting some planar travelers that wanted to worship her. So she just appeared and turned everyone into literal minced meat. I still remember the chain.
"Without you being able to understand quite what happened, you see the cultist nearest to the Lady of Pain, turn into a meat paste with pieces of metal in it in the blink of the eye. You suddenly watch as the Lady of Pain floats over to the leader of the worshipers and one by one, they are minced into different textures of minced meat. One into almost a liquid, one left just a torso without any limbs, one appears as if their flesh was separated from their body, one left a slashed mess but with their organs orderly stacked in a pile.
And the strangest thing? Even when attempting to *see* what the Lady of Pain is doing, all you can see is the before and after. You never saw any part of herself, except of her head move an inch. Until she reached the leader, to him she lifted her hand and the man just vanished."
"Can I roll perception to see if I can see what she did?"
"Sure"
"Rolls dice. 27. Yessss"
"You see nothing, the most you see is a glimpse of some bodyparts flying before reaching the ground in different states of being chopped".
That showed us quite quickly what NOT to do in Sigil.
Reminds me of one of Spoony story, where he had a player play a Minautor just to fuck with the lady of pain, since they can solve any maze... So when he was mazed it was just a very very very very long straight line. Have fun walking

Videographic gold. The comments are god tier too.
It actually feels like a real news segment that you would see on TV.
Can we please get a “what they don’t tell you about goblins” they are so basic that most people overlook them but I think they’re very interesting
"Goblins exists to be killed" Goblin Slayer
That’s a valid Opinion but I’m sure you’ll find many who disagree. Myself included
Yes let's talk about maglubyat
David Bowie is the Goblin King. That’s all I know about them.
The fact that they're apt at traversing mazes is pretty ironic, considering that in the Greek mythology the labyrinth was created with the scope of imprisoning the minotaur.
Edit: I got someone confused. The point of my comment is the fact that, according to the Greek mythology, a minotaur should be the exact opposite of “apt at traversing mazes”, since he was imprisoned in one. It’s kinda like putting vampires in your fantasy setting and state that they like garlic and sunbathing.
i guess if you spend decades doing something you will eventually get good at it. Or the labyrinth was so complex it befuddled even the minotaurs that were good at that thing.
To be fair that particular labyrinth was made by Daedalus
@@jonathanwells223 Yeah frfr. I'd be lost in a house built by Daedalus

"Reject modernity, return to cow"
Ngl the goal of those cults is something I can get behind in today’s age,
In 3.5 when I was playing a displaced prince of a long dead empire(during the collapse he jumped into a safegate realm, to which the party shattered the bindings 20,000 years later) who took leadership and was looking for a cohort. The DM decided it would be Blyakori, my character's former bodyguard and minotuar. TO be honest, I was surprised he remembered that one line of text within my character's backstory. Blyakori eventually died restraining the BBEG and we created a monument for him featuring his white chalice and massive greataxe. Later we found out he ascended into godhood. Blyakori, god of Honor, Law, and the Bonds(meaning closeness to friends and ones duty).
Minotaur gets around the corner, finding his victim in the labyrinth.
Victim: "Yes!"
The victim jumps in excitement
Minotaur: " Oh no, not another one.. For the last time! There is no secret cow level! "

Fun Fact I made up : The Minotaurs have their own gods, and their god of death is named Rahnahld Mak-d'nauldd.
Some Minotaurs that fear their God of death seek refuge in prayer to Vehgn Paddi, their goddess of trickery and illusions
I heard that some try to gain his favour by bringing mayhem to the worshippers of Tshiek'Hn, a rival minor god of Death worshipped mostly by the Aarakocra, in order to reduce casualties among their population. That being said, the Vehgn option is definitely the most ethical and sustainable alternative, if you ask me.

Or as Gary Larson put it, "The Golden Arches! The Golden Arches got me!!!"
"If you were born this way then you can't become something else."
Matt Mercer's Dunomancy: I'm about to wreck this man's whole career.
plus, you know, true polymorph.
I believe it’s “end this”, not “wreck this”.
"if you were born as something you can not be turned into something else"
...
sounds promising. so if a minotuar got reincarnated it would still be a great tracker but would be safer to be around since it no longer craves human flesh.
Seems like he may have forgotten about True Polymorph as well
Cannot RETURN to something else. Using a spell to Chang into something is different than a spell to revert. Also you lose all racial traits when you reincarnate
I really liked the minotaurs in Krynn with their own societal beliefs and structures. Centaurs always get set up to be their own group but minotaurs get the typical monster treatment. The way they were written in the offshoot Dragonlance series was well reasoned and developed. Also, having one being essential to the development and story of Huma made them so much more. Compared to what is described in 5th edition they could be very smart, charismatic, and wise. Almost any class was a possibility.
Kaz the Minotaur! Loved that book when I was a kid.
This makes me want to see a civilized Minotaur detective
Well, in ravnica, most of them are part of the police
@ not exactly what I meant, but close enough.
I'm now making one. That is brilliant!
Aha there appears to be some blood on the floor. Oh

Can’t wait for a video on hobgoblins
When a minataur meets a mate they spend time solving mazes and crosswords to get it on.
Minotaur: I'VE FOUND YOU!!!
Wizard: I have a puzzle for you. *pulls out a rubik's cube, and hands it the minotaur. The minotaur proceeds to try to solve it*
Wizard: okay that should buy us some time. RUN!!
13:20
I can't help but chuckle at idea of scary hulking brute excitingly trying to solve Rubik's Cube.
I got an idea : since twins are holy imagine what would happen if a female minotaur was fertile and always give birth to a twins, like every year; she's become tribes treasure because of this and every year there are fights over who going to mate with her this year and the one who wins get a respect for the rest of a year.
Honesty some random idea.
Oh wow that is an awesome idea for a backstory and possible quest
+1 a respect
This is actually pretty cool!

I’m still playing my first character ever made in my first campaign I’ve ever been in, it’s been going for around 3 years. He’s a Minotaur Barbarian Totem Warrior named Bhalt and he’s almost 18th level and it’s the most fun I’ve ever had with a character.
Had a minotaur monk in 3rd edition. Added the "large and in charge" feat. Pretty awesome.
Oh shoot, I just started a campaign where I play as a Minotaur Zealot Barbarian! Only at 3rd level to start, but It's pretty fun so far.

@@vagrant5970 But I mean...at least orcs aren't half-animal, so I mean, you can see why it's easier to get weirded out by that. They're pig-LIKE in some instances, but aren't half-pig.
@@therefinedhellion5041 Exactly, orcs are not half pigs, more more like 100% pigs, at least minotaurs looking good.
Hells yeah! Great video, Thank you for including my artwork!
Give them a magic Rubik's Cube that explodes when they solve it.
I still use the minotaur - gnoll hatred of each other. My character hunt's gnolls, cuts off their heads & adds the skulls to the alter room in his maze. That's to please Baphomet.
I just made a Minotaur character so for me this was perfectly timed. The character I made is a Artificer Battle Smith Minotaur that was raised by gnomes. Does anyone have any ideas how gnome culture could have affected his personality? So far I basically made him a gentle giant type that is something of a scholar. (He’s a gentle giant because he is used to having to be literally gentle to everyone or else he would easily accidentally break his families bones and the gnomes were kind so he took after them)
Does battle cause a bloodlust? If so do they find it an abominable part of themselves, or do they enjoy letting their rage out on a battle field?
Parker Miller I honestly don’t know, possibly. I thought he’d fight with a musket instead of the classic swinging big axe if that helps the kinda fighting style I am thinking.
I’d say he isn’t a fan of fighting but will if he must and maybe in the heat of battle he can be more monstrous to his foes and start popping heads with a repeating shot musket.
How could he be something of a scholar with such a short childhood?
@@renarddubois940 ok this character is actually no longer a thing but according to my book, Minotaurs age at the same rate as humans (yes it’s Theros Minotaurs, however it says that these stats are also to be used for Minotaurs in other worlds that escaped the influence of Baphomet). He is in his mid/late thirties and he was surrounded by very intelligent gnomes for his whole life. So, he is very scholarly when it comes to the amount of knowledge he has.
Edit: He’s no longer a thing because I got into another game. The party was filled with new people so playing as an artificer didn’t seem like the best idea and I don’t know if that was allowed so I made a Cleric.
Heck yeah! Bout to learn about some cow men!!
Great, I like minotaurs and plan to use them extensively in my new campaign. Time to watch.
"Wait, what's that in his tum-tum Tim Tim?
It's a bottle of tar tar, Tim Tim!

Was literally just starting to roll up and make a Minotaur character and I notice this, that’s awesome. Your videos are always so dang good, and you have an incredible voice for it too! Keep up the great work my man
I would love an episode on the Goliaths as a race. I feel like everyone always overlooks their most striking physical features, even in official art. Those being their eyes being one solid color, blue or green, and bone studs protruding from their skin making their skin look almost like studded leather
What if a god made a maze that denies the labyrinth recall ability to drive Baphomet even more insane as a punishment of some kind
Say hello to the Lady of Pain. She sends people to demiplane mazes as a punishment.
Those sorts of mazes do exist and it doesnt matter, somehow Minotaurs can still figure them out with ease, much to the Gods annoyance.
Thanks guys
It’s probably just easier to make a maze with no way out. You can’t solve a problem with no solution.
@@Aplesedjr no such thing as no way out, everything has an entry so that means there is an exit. And if the entry is closed off, one can always make an exit to suit them. That is the thinking of a Minotaur.
So appropriate for my campaign right now, taking lots of notes and thank you for the timing! God bless you!
Intriguing. So I guess the playable Minotaurs are more intelligent than their demonic counterparts. Also, means that their culture could vary.
So it's possible that one could make a Minotaur PC that eventually becomes a deity and form his or her own pantheon.
I created my minotaur barbarian to be a true anarchist that wants to bring chaos to all organised kingdoms, etc. He disrespects all leaders my party encounters and has to told to stay quiet to not piss off every royal.
"What they don't tell you about Baldurs Gate."
Minotaurs in the game »Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer« are depicted a bit different: Noble and civilized, you can in fact recruit them into your party or play one yourself. They also have a city in that game you can visit. The Minotaur acts like the Paladin class, that can use low level spirit magic but uses axes instead of mace and can't use shields like Paladin can.
I made a Minotaur character that was like a hard-boiled big city detective. He was good at his job because he could get around the city well. He’s a fun character.
Mine is a poet, anarchist and loves a good bar fight. Bardbarian combo with heavy RP makes it my fav character to this day
Some of the art in this vid is breathtaking, dang.
Wish I could get this good, ahah.
You are nobody in particular, how would u have art skill
We have a minotuar paladin character in our RUclips channel’s campaign. He was a random guy cursed into a minotuar by conniving cultists- and now he seeks righteous revenge. It’s been a really fun aspect of our gameplay because he is pretty brutally awesome in combat.

In 2nd edition the DragonLance Minotaur were a completely separate variation than the standard Minotaur. They came from their own continent on the other side of Krynn, Taladas, they were LAWFUL evil instead of Chaotic, had a VAST honor-bound society, they didn't have normal "hoof" feet but separated toes, and they came originally from OGRES instead of Humans.

Yet another vote for Gnolls! I don't know nearly enough about them, and would love to know about the various low-level monstrous races. Orc culture, Goblin culture, Gnoll culture, etc.
Every time you publish a video - a new part of my world and the potential story is born. Thank you, love.
Needed this for Out of the Abyss! Now just waiting on “What they don’t tell you about the Underdark”!
5:50 I assume that Wishing to break a minotaur curse woudn't work on a born minotaur, but I think you could theoretically True Polymorph a born minotaur into a human, since that spell can permanently transform a creature into different creature.
That is basically what he said, yes. That said, that would be the same as the curse that made the original minotaurs in that it could still be reversed, just not on a timer.
I could have sworn that the Krynn minotaurs had females but it was extremely rare for them to be seen outside of minotaur villages.
I have so many old dragon magazines, like the one mentioned.
Are they still collectable/valuable?
Id love to see a video about books that held up in value. And WHY
That's so funny your video came out now. I was just researching about minotaurs for a game I'm making. Thanks, bro!

Thanks for these videos! Really helps me world build my campaign.
Excellent video! I can’t help but hear my LG Minotaur Paladin being taken aback by the thought of eating humans so much!
Late on the video, but greatly done! Really nice summory. I use a Black-furred, enormous Minotaur as a BBEG in my first campaign. He has a blood-red-glowing ruby as an eye, which lets a Human Warlock command him. Created by this Warlock, the bull allowed the man to rise in power. Together they enslaved a goblin horde, now raiding the lands of the Swordcost and the High Forest. The village of my playercharacters was one of the first, to fall to the horde. Right now i am planning the plot for my PCs to find out about the ruby, the curse, the warlock. If they are clever enough, they might break the command-curse and get the minotaur as an ally against the true evil warlock.
Wow I clicked bc one time I was driving into Texas from Colorado around 2 am...and just outside Brian TX I swear I saw multiple of these guys running through a field so fast, it was very dark but the sky was lit up so bright with stars and the moon, out there with no street lights in the back roads of Texas, that shape is unmistakable.
I have to say I kinda hate the "Minotaurs love labyrinths and will never get lost in them" trope. In the original myth the point of the labyrinth was that the Minotaur *couldn't* get out!
and then you have the Dragonlance minotaurs who are essentially a lawful evil society descended from ogres, who largely follow a god of vengeance and conquest. They glorify strength and honor, value family and structure, and have elements of seafaring, shipbuilding, and the Romans built in. :D
i know its unorthodox, but in my world, i allow player character minotaurs. they generally spend their lives trying to escape baphomet's influence.
Can they pass through shadow roads? (can't remember what they're called but they are used by shadow fey and are supposed to trick and deceive mortals and apparently you cannot escape it or at least it's very hard to).

@@Leviathan4000 no but they're used by shadow fey

Abyssal blood runs in their veins so I'd guess yes. But it's also a magical effect so you'd have to compare the spell for its saves and if it affects creatures from the darker planes of existence. I'd say no to ones born a few generations down from the initial curse if they weren't still venerating their demon God
I feel like they could backtrack perfectly but would have difficulty progressing through areas they have yet to visit.
Thank you for this! I am literally writing a minotaur into our Necromatic Forest arc as a sort of urgency factor and this gave me SO many ideas!
Cool to see the lore evolve through editions, awesome work Rhexx!
Honestly if I was a werewolf I wouldn't wish to remove the lycanthropy curse but instead wish for the ability to remain conscious during my transformations so I can actually control my actions and as such use the curse for good. Then the only downside would be not being able control when I transform but come on there has to be some sort of magical artifact that gives the PC the power to choose when and where to transform. Obviously just like the wish spell it should be insanely difficult to get so it's only something you can acquire during later levels.
Damn you are a machine you post more than any other lore channels and yours are always the best keep it up

I think it would be interesting to make intelligence based Minotaurs since they enjoy puzzles so much. They could become the greatest minds the world has ever seen.
And if females are somewhat looked down upon, I think it would be a great hook for a gal to break from her clan. Then they could become rangers, wizards, or monks. Find their own paths.
Please please do a "what they don't tell you about star spawn" they have almost no lore in mordikinan's tome of foes but they are super cool
Minotaurs are my favorite monster in D&D. Theres just something utterly fear inducing about them if the dm plays them as cunningly as he should. There was one third party book that came out thx to the OGL that put a neat spin on them though, it was Maze of the Minotaur: Masters and Minions series. Made them more of a naturally occurring creature in the world like gnolls or goblins and less of an abomination brought by demonic rites. Gave them an ecology and a bit of a tribal culture. A good read. Pretty cheap to aquire too.
Great video btw keep it up. I watch all that come out.

The urge to write a complete bunch of bullsh°t overcame me.
Gosh... Raphael from Baldurs Gate 3 sets me out for the wierdest jobs I tell ya.
I've always been a fan of alternate ecologies, or those that flip the expected behavior / temperment of a creature on it's head, and really challenges the player's assumptions (or perspective) about said creature. Most of the D&D presentations of monster societies do very little in the way of challenging player perceptions, that is rules as written. I also find it odd that often hybrids like the Minotaur, Orc, and Yuan-ti are almost without exception sinister in nature; while in truth the "animal aspect" of the hybrid is almost always gentle and/or thoughtful in nature. Minotaur as a human-bull hybrid, well bulls are herbivores and generally very friendly to humans and other animals. Orc as a human-pig hybrid, well pigs although omnivores, plants will make up almost 90% of their diets, and also have very gentle dispositions (some very specific caveats here, look into it if you buy into the fantasy idea that wild boar are always aggressive). Lastly the Yuan-ti, a human-snake hybrid. Snakes avoid contact with humans as much as possible, and of course they are obligate carnivores, but hunt infrequently and are an essential part of their eco-system. A great number of ancient cultures revere each of these animals as possessing ideal traits humans aspire to.
All of this leads me to this suggestion. It is not the animal aspect that creates the "hybrids" imbalance, aggression, blood-lust, et al... it's the human aspect that does.
I would love to see a "what they don't tell you about.." On legendary animals and lycanthropy & the different kind of were-creatures.
While I know you don't look at other settings very often for these... I do recall their being an entire Minotaur nation in Dragonlance... It may be the only one in all the D&D worlds I know of & as I recall they actually had clerics at least and used magic weapons. They seemed a bit smarter on average than the traditional Minotaur and were sailors ala Vikings in many cases.
You're right. Someone else in the comments was talking about it

My boyfriend got me into D&D literally yesterday and I was really hoping to find a video on Changlings as a playable race could you do that next?
There is a contradiction there.
If a human can be turned into a minotaur, despite being born a human, then arguably a minotaur born a minotaur could be turned into a human... this would be like a reverse curse.
Okay, but how would a dragonborn minotaur interaction go?
One of the first long running games i was in had a minotaur in the party. His name was beefcake, he was our barbarian but ironically he was the voice of reason in our group along with my firbolg ranger. They were like the tired dads who constantly had to wrangle in their hyperactive kids.
Anyone know where the image at 11:40 is from?
Fanart from critical role. You can find it on Pinterest. It's made by Raikimii. Happy travels
Seems someone was paying attention when I mentioned this race in one of my comments. Either that or it’s just ironic coincidence.
The great algorithm sees all.
Surprised that there's no mention of the Blood Sea Minotaurs from the Dragonlance setting. They were not demonic in origin, but were magically mutated from the Irda (an ogre progenitor race). They had thier own nations (Mithas and Kothas) and had a civilization like that of Rome. Many were expert sailors as well.
Also, the puzzle-solving ability makes them immune to the Maze spell.
Just started playing a Tyr Worshiper, Minotaur Tank Paladin a few days ago, and at first i though it will be a weird combination, but found out that it clearly works :D
