The animation by SHAFT studio is very beautiful, the fight sequences have their charm, although it is fun to see in their initial interactions Weiss and Ruby form their great friendship.
Errrrrr, the animation sucked. Very jolty, looks like it was done on the cheap. It was honestly quite disorientating watching it because the cuts were a bit much. Also the characters lacked any sort of the momentum that they had in the original series and the only thing i can say that is going for the show in an action sense is better art style, but not animation which looks inferior to a 10 year old show. A simple example was where RWBY grabs the bird grim and rams her scythe up its neck and pulls it up the cliff. In the original it feels really lodged in there and the intensity of the shot is intense. In the the remake it looks more like shes gliding and the bird is being animated up there, it looks fake and the scythe doesnt even look like it should reach the neck and then you see the horribleness that is after the bit where they clearly spent some budget with the decapitation, they then reverse back to a quality of animation ive seen better in kids projects where we see the cliff fall and it just looks awful. This was just 1 example, there are plenty of other animation points that are really bad especially when compared to the original, which given 10 yearsish of development shouldnt happen

As a fan of both the original I’m loving the anime spin off so far! Sure it’s basically a recap of volume 1 before they start moving into their own original story but I’m enjoying it thus far. It’s really a better written RWBY, in terms of dialogue, showing emotion etc. yes yes the original first volumes were rough but they had charm. This however takes that charm and revamps it. I really don’t care too much on how the original is going as of volume 9 coming early next year. Take it from someone that just enjoys what he likes plain and simple. Also I like to point out of much more cuter Ruby is in the anime like seriously!!! Then Weiss? BAE BRO BAEEEEE. Yang is alright, Blake needs more screen time but still cute.

Theres other problems too like rushed pacing, removal of basically most of the humour, Yangs character is made so mild that it doesnt really resemble the character, the fire is just gone If the show abandons being an action show and instead becomes more of a drama, taking full advantage of the 2d animation, then i may have some hope for this show as a spin-off what-if series

Ann’s if this show really harnesses the drama and action, I’m all for it!!
Although I like this fight as it just looks gorgeous, I can't stop but thinking that I would have preferred if they made Penny's power flexing fight scene in stead. With that animation, that fight would have been insane. It's really a shame they skipped it
They’re skipping a lot of stuff to budget for later works, not that it doesn’t bug me because it does, but I’m just praying they don’t disappoint later down the road. As it stands, lots of content is getting cut out because the team is assuming we already know what’s happened with the original series. One thing that absolutely bugs me is the conflict revolving around Jaune and how all of that got cut out to focus entirely on team RWBY.

His friendship with Ruby was just great to watch in the original and his whole arc has been kind of pushed aside and that's a real shame. I really wish they used team JNPR more in general and I also prefered jaun when he was less confident, more goofy and more awkward (innitailly at least) but that's a thing that they changed in general, the show is just less goofy in general. Let's just hope that they nail the rest of the show and that skipping all of this was worth it.

But as far as I’m concerned, we only got about a minute’s worth of their bonding experience before they’re thrusted into the dreamscape to save him. They’re also instructed that to save him, they must be close to him, but we don’t even get any context within Ice Queendom, and have to solely rely on what we do know from the original. Honestly, it’s really lazy writing on their part for this segment. I’m also hoping they don’t screw this up as well further down the line.
This looks awesome. I'm amazed that Shaft has 2 absolute gods of animation in Nagata (animator of Ruby vs mobs and last part of the fight with the bird) and Kawada (animator of this scene)
From what I understood, they are just doing book 1 and then are going to deviate to do their own thing. So as disappointing as this is, they probably won't do the food fight

The camera in this scene is way too close and shaky during the action. It's actually making me a little motion sick. There needs to be establishing shots to communicate the nature of the battlefield and where each combatant is in space.

And if I’m gonna be honest I’m gonna be wary of a man who worry a 36 page essay about glorifying Monty while he was going though both depression, a divorce (because of the unhealthy work schedule that he and Monty had) and personal issues. He even comes off as just a terrible employee in said letter and acts as though RWBY was meant to be his. One of the times when Shane said they insulted Monty by saying how his behavior was unacceptable at one point and quite frankly they were right. The man was a terrible unhealthy workaholic and most certainly contributed to the crunch problem RT had. Even with Sheena, we’ll what we’re they gonna do? She was his wife and while he probably told here stuff, he actually worked with RT. He didn’t even go into detail as to what she helped on in RWBY. If a scriptwriter passes does a show/company just bring on their spouse because they potentially helped the show? Or do they go with the co-writers who made it. I’m not saying RT is squeaky clean and honestly I have my issues with RWBY but I always thought it was disgusting people used his death to attack his friends.

And if I’m gonna be honest I’m gonna be wary of a man who worry a 36 page essay about glorifying Monty while he was going though both depression, a divorce (because of the unhealthy work schedule that he and Monty had) and personal issues. He even comes off as just a terrible employee in said letter and acts as though RWBY was meant to be his.
One of the times when Shane said they insulted Monty by saying how his behavior was unacceptable at one point and quite frankly they were right. The man was a terrible unhealthy workaholic and most certainly contributed to the crunch problem RT had.
Even with Sheena, we’ll what we’re they gonna do? She was his wife and while he probably told here stuff, he actually worked with RT. He didn’t even go into detail as to what she helped on in RWBY. If a scriptwriter passes does a show/company just bring on their spouse because they potentially helped the show? Or do they go with the co-writers who made it.
I’m not saying RT is squeaky clean and honestly I have my issues with RWBY but I always thought it was disgusting people used his death to attack his friends.
Animation are good, fights are awesome but the overall result feels like rwby without a soul. Like the character pretend to be characters
