I bought a Bay ST and it arrived in early June. I finally got it out on the water this weekend and again today. I just love the boat. I am an experienced kayaker and the boat exceeded expectations.
That just blew me away. I have never seen something like this before. That was one of the coolest videos I have seen on RUclips. Footage under water was amazing. That was just simply an awesome review. Thanks. Tony.
Scott 263987 You seriously seem to enjoy the word seriously i mean seriously you seriously used it like seriously 10 times in your comment seriously. And seriously have you seriously ever tried this kayak? It seriously sounds like you haven't, but seriously you have a lot of serious issues. You seriously have no serious idea as to whether or not this is a good kayak seriously. And seriously, of course if you seriously ask another serious manufacturer of serious kayaks they will seriously tell you it's not good because seriously they are trying to sell their product seriously.
Exactly. The argument of "no it's not good because it's plastic" has been debunked a long time ago. Hell, the video of the guys throwing it off a roof and hitting it with a hammer is proof enough that it's fairly sturdy. It looks like a great kayak, and I can't wait to get one.
Just after 10:30. I think you say "yak tracks". I googled , result it show me are some kinda boots. Is that what you mean yak tracks, or is it something else. I am a bit puzzled..
I own a Brompton folding bike. Best folding bike on earth. You pay a premium price for quality in a small package sometimes. Nature of the beast. I don't kayak but I can see the allure of these.
My wife has claimed the Beach and I have sort of claimed the Bay. For what we do, the Beach would have served both of us better. This includes using them on Lake Superior on an Upper Peninsula trip a few weeks back.
Packrafts are low pressure, so it's just a few minutes of non strenuous activity pushing air from a pillowcase into the boat. Inflatable kayaks are likely higher pressure and need pumps of some sort, I expect. Deflation isn't any harder than for air mattresses (although it is wetter). Those kayaks are likely faster, so if you aren't going to be backpacking them they're a good choice, I imagine. But I portage my packraft so the 6 lb weight is an advantage.
A high quality inflatable is faster to set up (fill time), weight is around the same, cost is lower, performance can be better than Oru (depending on make/model), stability much better, able to better carry more gear. I've paddled the Oru and was not impressed, but since I'm a longtime paddler (some day old), there ae features and performance that I want, especially considering all the short cuts with Oru vs their cost. Are they a good kayak? Sure. But in my view, there are better choices if looking for portability, performance on the water, ease of setup, and cost.
IMO the hardware will ware out before the hull will. There haven't really been a lot of issues with the hull wearing out. But I wish they would have used aluminum for some of the key load baring hardware.
As someone who had, and loved, Feathercraft and Folbot kayaks, but spent many hours assembling, disassembling, re-waterproofing, re-rivetting, and so on, this looks a real advance. But it looks like water can get in through the fold on the deck. Is that correct? If so, can one get inflatable pockets for the compartments like the Folbots used to include?
I've done a few overnight trips in a 2015 bay and loved it. I sold the bay though and I'm getting a coast XT because I moved to the ocean and I wanted a longer kayak
I live in Sydney Australia, I'm seriously having trouble to choose which model above to buy. Does the BEACH model have any capability against any waves such as a bay condition? or you can only use it in still water like a lake? However it looks really more comfortable than the BAY model. Really hard for me to choose.
This looks *fantastic* for someone who is perfectly capable of paddling on my own save carrying my kayak around. We already have a fleet of kayaks: inflatable, rotomolded, and airalite, but I cannot carry any of them easily, and kayaking is one of the things I love to do. Thanks for sharing this, it looks incredible and I will definitely want to find out more. Any idea if you can roof rack it though, or does it have to be folded between trips?
Hi at Ben. I hope you still see these comments. I'm super interested in getting the Oru Bay. Now that you've had it for a year what are your thoughts? Is it more or less durable than you originally thought? Have you used the Bay in calm ocean conditions? You mentioned the Bay was less stable. Is that just for loading or do you feel it's less stable in the water? I want to buy but so nervous because it's not a small investment, but if it works well then it's worth it to me.
The slides are new for the top I see they took care of the big problem of them bending at the top. Sorry for spamming the comments really cool stuff you got there, Enjoy you're day out and have a good memorial day Ben.👍
Nice Ben...... i have a pair of canoes, but Im going to splurge and get an inflatable because I can only go on the river here certain times of the yr. Keep up the vids bro!
Those are really cool. I have a 9 yr. old son, our only water close by is the Colorado River, definitely need a safer boat for the summer. Early spring and late fall we take the canoe, but high eater is no place for the the old Pelican.
I saw a dare for a over niter. I double that dare! Yeah those kayaks are awesome! I'm thinking about getting a kayak sometime this year. I doubt one of these just because, but hopefully I can find a used one that's a lot less expensive.
hey living survival then some really cool kayak videos how to find the link where you can purchase those Kayaks at really cool video much appreciated hope to see more camping cookware tents camping with kayak that you showed here on the video that would be cool to see thank you for sharing loving survival.
Awesome video. I can't wait to see the trip videos on your second channel. Quick question were your paddles able to break down small, or were they two piece?
I seen this on shark tank looked at other RUclips videos and seen some did not hold up good for the price of the kayak. I am looking forward to seeing you review this.
They seem a bit overpriced, most likely due to their unique construction, but seems like a good investment as Emergency or light recreation kayak. if it or when it fails, be it a hole or crack, you could always keep a small fiberglass kit with you. Or even do a whole fiberglass wrap after the 20k+ wear from regular use you mentioned.
Fantastic video! Been following your channel for a while now, and I must say, this is my favorite vid. Ive got to ask, when your daughter grows up, she's faced with the difficult question: "what do I get my dad for Father's day?". Lol what the hell do you get for the dad whom"literally" has EVERYTHING?? Lol anyway, keep rockin man!! 🤘
Kayaks for people with more money than brains I think.....they seem ridiculously over priced for what they are. Fantastic concept and idea. Seriously guys I’d consider looking somewhere like ‘advanced elements’ products if you don’t have the room from hard shells at home. I would be interested to see these off the coast line, with a mild surf, fitted with a spray skirt (the enclosed cockpit one) how much water do they let in then? That I would like to see. How do they track? I didn’t notice any tracking fins, and they seem to ride quite high? Still a nice video but an insanely overpriced product with no longevity.
I used to use that same material as signage. It will be brittle junk in a couple of years. Also, folding plastic constantly is always going to cause failure eventually and creates tension that will be really weak to any impact. I can't believe people pay so much for a product that is guaranteed to fail.
when you buy a product you are paying for the idea, the design, the labor, the fasteners, the materials (which are much more than coroplast), the marketing, the packaging etc. Welcome to creating a product and marketing it to consumers. Could you make one on your own, sure good luck with that. It is priced accordingly and made in the USA. I'm sure if it was made in China it would be less so maybe you can wait for that.
i meant the the main material isn't the only part. bow and stern covers, fasteners, seat, pads, hull supports etc. tell you what, make one up, then make a video on it and tell everyone how cheap you made it for and then market it and sell it around the world!
Living Survival less than $150 in materials. I'm not saying they shouldn't be compensated for their design, but let's not get this twisted, marking up a product 100x is asinine. Especially for a temporary product. This kayak won't last long term, not compared to traditional kayaks that are similarly priced. These aren't being used in true survival situations. A large portion of the markup on traditional kayaks is simply the shipping costs getting them to retailers or customers. This is an overpriced toy for folks with more money than brains.
Living Survival I'm not saying it isn't a very cool product, at $500-600 it's would be almost a no brainer for occasional use. At $1,300 there are much more durable and capable options.
Cool idea but the price is insane. Seen them selling for 900-2000$... Something like this shouldn't be more than 3-400$, it's just a single sheet of stamped material after all..
I wish I had a couple of thousand dollars to throw at one of these things. They seem like they're almost small and light enough to add to my kit. If I could carry this thing with me anywhere I go, I would probably save up for one.
Nice Kayaks but indeed, VASTLY over priced, at least from looking at their web page. The real value is nowhere near the MSRP. An old Folboat sailor and paddler from the 60s.
I tried a Folbot once. It felt like I was paddling in cement. I got a real kayak, a Current Designs Kestral. I got tired of car topping it, so I bought an Oru Bay ST. It is worth every penny and is very similar in performance to the Current Designs boat.
$1300 to $1600, that's NUTZ for what you are getting! Hard to complain about how much that roof rack cost vs the cost of these origami kayaks. Not a fan for that price at all.
I remember seeing these when they first started popping up on Instagram, really cool idea and concept especially as something to keep in your car or for the people who might want a "bug out" yak lol, but just not practical for me when I saw the price vs what I could get for he same amount elsewhere. I admit I am able to have my Ocean Kayak BGProwler because I have a storage unit it fits in but still, for $1300 and only a capacity of 300lbs, people could get a real kayak that will last way longer. I can guarantee this would not have made it through this last 95mile trip I did, one buckle breaks or piece of plastic and then what? I can patch my kayak if a hole gets warn into it ya know? I consider this an expensive recreational kayak. If it works for you though man awesome, we all have our preferences and that's what great about products. If you don't like something then don't buy it ya know?
$1105 and $1360 on their website right now and I don't need a $400 rack. So...$1360 is still over $600 short of two thousand which you said in your original comment.
Living Survival i didn't see that the are discounted at the moment. but still starting at $1100 for the base model and $2300 for the "top of thr line". pricey stuff. especially considering the building materials and what the competition sells for.
Living Survival smh at you @livingsurvival - just because someone can't afford a $1000 Kayak you're going to try to shame them? I started following you based on your gear reviews but recently (not counting your "cheap hammock" review) your videos are all super high-end gear options. Btw, my backyard is the Chattahoochee so I have weekly time on the water and have never owned a $1000 kayak.
my videos have always been and always will be based on the gear I own and gear i use. I do a mix of expensive and affordable options however I see fit. for this product it is perfect for me in an apartment regardless of price. that's great that you never owned a $1000 kayak.
the other kayaks I was researching were the jackson tupelo, old town loon and the wilderness systems pungo. I believe they were all $800-$1000. keep in mind for me i want a durable fishing or multi-day kayak and the cheaper options (pelican) just don't work for me. I've rented them and they are great for just kicking around for an hour or two but for serious travel or time on the water no thanks.
I think I remember seeing these on "Shark Tank". None of the investors would buy in. Although a marvel of engineering, something that's made out of political yard signs that costs $1200? I don't think so.
I'm the type of person who if I'm not in the woods or on the river, then I'm probably in the middle of plaining my next trip to the woods or the river. In 2014 I lived in town in a small apartment and I only had a car to get around in. I ended up not being able to do a lot of river trips because I just didn't have the space for a watercraft and no way to transport it. Spring of 2015 I coat wind of what Oru was doing building these folding kayaks and I got my self a 12ft 2015 bay and loved it. I used it through the spring and summer for several multi day river trips and loved it. If you don't want to spend 1200 for the bay from REI or ORU, you can get an older model now for under 1000 if you do some searching. I think Sam's club was actually selling them for 500 at one point. But I will say that the new 2017 models are nice. That's why I've sold my 2015 bay and I'm waiting for REI to send me my Coast XT any day now.
Living Survival you know, when you think about it that way, it doesn't make sense. You're going to spend five to $600 on a kayak and another five to $600 on a rack so you're right there anyway. And then you don't have all that stuff in the air dragging down your gas mileage too.
@@MichelleSK6 no worries...i returned the kayak, saved myself 1800. N a lot of grief n took my biz elsewhere...☺🤗💞💖...its not the customers job to cater to the co...i have 2k customers n when they call, i Always return the call within 24 hours. Its called Customer service which oru has none...they need to shut down if their that lazy. Tcare n god bless💞💖🙄☺Zero excuses
I must be living under a rock had no idea anything like this was out on the market. Very cool thanks Ben.

once again, a keyboard commando with zero research done. people use these all over the world and have been for several years with little issue.

@@livingsurvival Ha thanks , gl hf..

agreed.
Vary cool seeing them put together and on the water.
Thanks for this video. We couldn’t decide between the Bay or the Beach, so we went with both.
My wife has claimed the Beach and I have sort of claimed the Bay. For what we do, the Beach would have served both of us better. This includes using them on Lake Superior on an Upper Peninsula trip a few weeks back.
I am in an apartment - this is Amazing !
Looked like a great day on the river . That yak trak for fishing would be my first. Purchase .👍
Wouldnt that material break after several fold and unfold?
No I’ve had one 3 years, seriously durable
The advantages of these are why I went to packrafts. My packrafts aren't as fast but they're lighter likely more stable and pack smaller.
FlashGeiger I thought about an inflatable but the hassle of inflation and deflation kept me from buying.

Thanks, I will. in fact I was just paddling on Lake Ontario yesterday. A bit breezy, but we still managed and enjoyed ourselves.
Do you think the Oru Bay ST can support a heavier paddler? I'm 5'9" 230lbs.
I’m 5’10” 225.
I was drooling over these at REI! Awesome review as always :).
Smart designs overall, but the Beach definitely wants to go in a circle. I love how two of them could fit in a compact car.
it's very nice what do you think about the blow up kayaks you get the whole kit for like 170 a 2-seater kayak paddle pump
dj rayner the inflatables I looked at were just as expensive and then you have to inflate and deflate.
Living Survival ok sorry I just figured they would be a lot more then $200.00
Will it sink if you capsize?
I wonder how many times they can be folded and unfolded before you might get a crack in the folded areas.
acet7 they said over 20,000
cool
IMO the hardware will ware out before the hull will. There haven't really been a lot of issues with the hull wearing out. But I wish they would have used aluminum for some of the key load baring hardware.
Both are sold out... these are awesome!
Super awesome video
I’m ordering some soon for my river metal Detecting Adventures. I can’t wait! Thanks for sharing! ~ Gypsy
Really nice rig for a good kayak!
You won't have the hassle of portage!
Nice!
just wondering what the weight limits are.. how much gear you could take for an overnighter

How have they held up?
Now thats pretty amazing.
Very Cool! Thanks!
Is the Bay model safe enough for sea coastal waters?
I wonder how long the folds will last under repeated use.
20,000 +
Living Survival basically forever :-)
I like the ability to pack it in.
also i dare you to do a river overnight with the kayak
Neil Archer I've taken mine out on Class II+ water for an overnight trip. It was great if your gear is relatively compact.
I've done a few overnight trips in a 2015 bay and loved it. I sold the bay though and I'm getting a coast XT because I moved to the ocean and I wanted a longer kayak
Wow those are sweet I want one you don't have to worry about storing or buying a car rack!
The storage is the most best thing about the kayaks.
Which model is easier to assemble?
Very cool, never saw them before. How is the drag in the water with them compared to a regular hard sided kayak? They seem to move well from the video
they move really well. the Bay is not as stable but faster.
Would like to see you do a packrafting video.
Happy to see you getting out with the gals :)
ótimo. gostaria de comprar ... qual preço $$$? envia para Brasil?

According to their Shark Tank pitch, it costs them about $505 to build it...
coroplast for 2 grand ? nope.
It was nice until i found out it costs more than the car i would be transporting it with.
wauw!
Interesting boating concept. 'Most amazing kayak in the World'!!? Probably not.
Talking not demonstrating?
Have 1000s of miles in kayaks. Had 2 FOLBOTS. 13+ mins and you never fold the fvkk3r?
Not the most amazing, but I'm sure it has a niche.
two thousand bucks! no thanks, I'll stick to something a little cheaper.
Dylan Castle you must not be able to read.
Living Survival yeah, i can read. starting at $1300 and all the way up to $2500, i stand by my original statement.
$1105 and $1360 on their website right now and I don't need a $400 rack. So...$1360 is still over $600 short of two thousand which you said in your original comment.
This is for people who can't own a normal kayak for whatever reasons. Good luck finding a cheaper option for a foldable kayak.
Living Survival i didn't see that the are discounted at the moment. but still starting at $1100 for the base model and $2300 for the "top of thr line".
pricey stuff. especially considering the building materials and what the competition sells for.
Who can afford one of these kayaks not me . Its unfortunate when cool tech comes out its so overpriced and out of reach for the average Joe.
Let's see you getting out on some rocks.
These are more expensive that actual kayaks these foldable ones cause a grand better off just buying an actual on cool idea but way too expensive
$1300 for the cheapest model? No thank you, I can get a great 4 kayaks for that price.
Brennan Louderback yep four pelicans SMH.
Living Survival Could you review some more affordable kayak options then, considering you review products ranging from expensive to affordable?
the other kayaks I was researching were the jackson tupelo, old town loon and the wilderness systems pungo. I believe they were all $800-$1000. keep in mind for me i want a durable fishing or multi-day kayak and the cheaper options (pelican) just don't work for me. I've rented them and they are great for just kicking around for an hour or two but for serious travel or time on the water no thanks.
I can make one for probably $200
SkeletorRises I’d pay $200 to watch a video of you trying
More like a toy for the bathtub, better have a real one. Cheaper too.
Overpriced see how long it last. No flotation. No bulkheads. Plastic cardboard.
I think I remember seeing these on "Shark Tank". None of the investors would buy in.
Although a marvel of engineering, something that's made out of political yard signs that costs $1200? I don't think so.
TexasScout Noneofyourbusiness and then went on to raise half a million on Kickstarter.
Living Survival I hope that by mass production, the price will come down to a reasonable ($500-600) level for what it is.
Actually Robert on Shark Tank bought in at 25% and $500,000.
You're an idiot.
Lol $2500??? This can't be real are you guys trolling? You could by 10 real nice kayaks lol. This would break in a week.
And they sell a ton of them.
Way overpriced if they were only a couple of hundred which they should be they would sell well
they sell very well.
just shows how many people have more money than sense.
for me it makes perfect sense. I can't have a hard shell where I live and don't want to spend $400 on a kayak rack for my truck.
Living Survival you know, when you think about it that way, it doesn't make sense. You're going to spend five to $600 on a kayak and another five to $600 on a rack so you're right there anyway. And then you don't have all that stuff in the air dragging down your gas mileage too.
that's if you buy a cheap kayak. If you buy a jackson tupelo, old town loon or wilderness systems pungo you are at around $800-$1000.
