    Love my 5150! I've never owned Marshall before but have played them in stores. I've owned a Peavey 5150 signature, Mesa Dual Rectifier, EVH 5150 III 100W, Peavey 6505, and a Peavey 5150 Block Letter.
    The Peavey 5150 always comes out on top for me! 🤘😈

    Great video Euge. Funny I played an 800 combo for years and then when the high gain amp thing came in I sold it and got a 5150 block letter. For years I kept trying to get my tone with the 5150 and even started using the Rhythm channel like yourself, I just found that for leads the 5150 had a kind of thin squashed sound tha

    Terve Euge! Interesting comparison, and nice riffing as usual. Both amps are as you said great sounding and it comes down to years of playing loud and live to decide which one to prefer. I´ve played marshall 2203:s boosted with a SD-1 since eighties and there is something subtle I miss when playing other (also great) amps. Marshalls are just a tad more gritty on their own but that really helps when youre on a stage with a crazy drummer and loud bass. Great channel, keep ém coming!

    Euge, fantastic look into 2 great amps.. just discovered your channel as I have an old 5150 and a Marshall (Major) converted to a superlead with 800 style gain cascade.. They do both sound great together.. the 6550 tubes in the ZW is a plus.. 6L6 in the peavey give bottom as expected... I wish these makers would use KT88 tubes as I think they give a SUPER WIDE range like this mix.. some think they are a bit sterile, but i love them.. my Marshall has a split bias using 2 x KT88 and 2 x EL34.. really big huge sound out of it.. Great vid !! thanks ..

    You always make the amps sound really good sound but I'm biased towards the JCM.
    Two questions:
    1) Could you address how do you manage to make pedals sound good (reverbs, delay) on the JCM 800 without the effects loop?
    2) Where do you get flight cases like those for your amps heads?

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  3 года назад +1

      Thanks!
      1) I don’t use those but if I do when recording (like on my videos) I just add dly & rev in DAW to the channel insert like you do when recording albums etc.
      All other pedals always in front of the amp and sometimes dly as well (you just have to dial the pedal level really low.
      2) Custom made by Transit Case Finland

    Sick tones again. Love em both. 5150 kind of reminds me of this old in flames/at the gates sound. Björn is using a Marshall nowadays though. It's a dough Aldrich custom amp, that never became a mass production amp.
    I really like your oldschool take on things. You make these marshalls sounds really great.
    Some mixing tutorials from you would be interesting too ;)

      Oh that’s what he’s been using; I knew it was a proto but didn’t know that it was meant to be an Aldrich signature. Cool!
      Yeah that’s what they used in IF back in the day.
      I’m not really a mixing engineer but I could do a video of at least how I ”mix” these RUclips videos / songs. Which isn’t much to be honest; basically just setting the levels that everything is in balance 😎.

      @@EugeValovirta230V I don't know, if it was actually meant to be a signature amp, but it was custom built for Doug Aldrich. It has got an internal tubescreamer like boost, a noisegate and reverb. It also has got a gain shape button and goes from all clean to high gain.
      Interesting amp :)

    After doing quite a bit of research on speakers, 1970's Celestion greenbacks win my vote for being such a vocal speaker for guitar tone. Mixed with Creambacks or even Eminence Texas heat or such warm speakers blends extremely well. I own a 5150 signature combo and a Canadian made Garnet combo (which has a Blackstar or JCM800 sound with even more mids when loaded with EL34's althought they are designed for 6L6.
    So basically I have the combo version of what you have for a setup. I run my setup with a Boss SD1 with gain almost to zero and volume past 12 oclock. Tone knob around 10 oclock. Depends on the day I play. Still deciding. I only found out this week that Zakk Wylde actually used this setup to boost his signal. I've been doing this for three decades at least. It cuts some of the low end though so I'd like to either mod the SD1 or find another pedal to try such as the Maxxon or original tube screamer. I made my own boost pedal with my electronics background but it sounds a bit muddy. Takes away some clarity. I should fiddle with the components and experiment.
    The Sheffeild 1500s sound brittle. I would like to try another speaker in that cab. Greenbacks perhaps. It's hard to tell as the Sheffields push a lot of bottom end. I saw a trick where someone sands down some material off the cone of a speaker to make it more vocal. Basically thinning the material applied to the paper. I'm not that courageous.
    My Garnet is an open back so my next project is to close the speaker part to give the speakers a quicker response and more thud. I'm going to replace the caps, some pots, worn speakers, add a bias control for EL34, close the speaker enclosure isolated from the tubes for heat dissipation and possibly add a send and return jack option.

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  3 года назад

      Yeah Greenbacks, V30s & Eminence P50Es are some of my favourite speakers.
      Is there a way to use overdrive some other way than boosting a signal? 😊. I mean that’s what it does; overdrives the signal 👌😎.
      Sounds cool man! RAWK. 💪

    5150 seemed to have more attack and more focus. Marshall not a huge amount less, but the tone has more going on, i.e., more character, growl and mids, or something. I think the 5150 would be easier to work with in a very busy mix. Marshall would fill more space in the mix. There are uses for both.
    P.S. Edit. My usually sleepy old brain quickly got to thinking up some of those uses. One would be for harmony parts and getting some separation between them. Get the 5150 playing the lower note and the 800 playing the harmonized line above. A tighter focused lower note and a rich singing harmonized note above it using all that extra presence.

      @EugeValovirta230V  3 года назад +1

      I dialled it to be since deep and ballsy is good 😎💪. Yeah 800 is one of the most loudest amps and sounds the best when it’s cranked. Dialling 5150 as loud would make it sound a bit mushy. It’s all about finding the sweet spot 👌.

    Sorry, to finish, the lead sound on the 5150 is bright and thin sounding, I went back to an 800 and my sound came back, full and more guts and warmth. The 5150 can do metal though.

    *again the pivic seemed too fat-free in comparison with 800, although in itself it is certainly very, very good))*
    *in general, in comparison with 800, all amps will lose)))*
    *800 for a guitarist - like a chicken breast for a bodybuilder: gobble up mixtures, pork, beef, canned food, spices - still get back to basics 8)))*
    *снова пивик показался через чур обезжиренным именно в сравнении с 800, хотя сам по себе безусловно весьма и весьма не плох))*
    *вообще в сравнении с 800 все ампы будут проигрывать)))*
    *800 для гитариста - как куриная грудка для культуриста: обожрись смесей, свинины, говядины, консервов, специй - всё равно вернёшься к основам 8)))*
