  • Some American cities use buses, or trams, or trains. Peachtree City, Georgia, has a different solution: it's not quite public transit, but a hundred miles of golf cart tracks helps to keep cars off the road.

The Georgia road trip continues! Thanks to Mayor Fleisch and her team for their time. I realise that the golf carts aren't directly comparable to public transit - for a start, they're privately-owned - but I'd say that replacing cars with slower-speed, electric vehicles is at least an improvement!

I just want to make it abundantly clear that this is not the only city that does this. This is very common in Minnesotan towns, as many neighborhoods are right next to golf courses. I know this is common practice in Minnetrista, every home has golf carts.

They have special lanes for golf carts and they have the right of way. It's not uncommon to get cut off by some elderly person in a golf cart when driving there (I used to all the time for business). I live in a golf retirement community in Arizona. Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand. Golf carts both gas and electric share the road with full size cars and trucks. Maximum speed limit within the community is 35 mph and the carts have lights, turn signals, horn and seat belts and a speed limiter of 25 mph. Gas carts get 40 mph with a 5 or 6 gallon tank, electric carts get about 35 mp charge, insurance can be added at the back end of your car insurance for less than $50. This saves quite a bit on car maintenance and costs. The community has everything you need except big box stores which are close but not accessible by golf cart. I'm not familiar with other 55 plus communities in Arizona that allow golf carts.

All these comments along the lines of "they should use bikes instead!" are missing the point that the city-wide network would not exist without the carts. Since the paths offer multi-mode transportation, the city was able to raise the taxes necessary to build and maintain the paths. If they had tried to raise taxes for a bike-only path network, the city government would likely not have been successful. The network is as extensive as it is because of the golf carts.

I lived on an island in December 2018, until August 2020. It was inland and was like a peninsula, but it was technically an island. There were two bridges connecting, and the only reason you would go into the island would to be there for a specific reason. There was no pass through for traffic. It was called Daniel Island and was in Charleston SC. Anyway, people rode golf carts everywhere. It kind of looked like the city in this video, but it was much bigger. It had about 70,000 people living in it. Anyway, they rode golf carts on the rode, to school, and on all of the pathways too. I thought it was cool because the city in this video seems so similar to Daniel Island.

Nah bro, Atlanta is the Hollywood of the east coast now, real estate has been skyrocketing here for the last few years because brokers will buy out houses, and rent them to film crews for ludicrous amounts of money, that studios are willing to pay for to get their people out here.
But for normal people this means the price of an average house is skyrocketing in certain areas such as Peachtree, which is a major film town, not to mention it's distance to ATL considered.

I'd love a road network like that and see a lot of sense in it, considering the amount of duplication going on in even larger cities. You often have blocks of housing with schools and retail centers dotted about in repeating patterns, so it's not like many people would often wind up with a 20MPH limit being a major hurdle. I'd imagine extra-long cart rides would only happen to slightly more people than extra-long drives by car currently affect in many places, and unlike the latter, the former could be bridged by public parking lots at bus stops and the like.
The only proper bike trails in this city I'm in were just put in as a token gesture here and there, and the rest are confined to parks. You just can't get around via cycle here unless you live in work in very specific places, unless you're willing to commit to sharing often shoulderless roads with normal traffic. Considering normal biking speed for many is 10-20MPH, and most roads here have speed limits of 40-60MPH and not so much as a shoulder or sidewalk (city ordinances ban biking on sidewalks, but people often ignore that for safety's sake when available, and no one enforces it), it's just asking to get run over once the sun goes down. Basically, I'm radiating enough jealousy to power a small town right now.

The Chinese are adding electric cars the size and speed of golf carts to their city streets. They have to do it because of cost and pollution. In many cities, there just is no reason we have to drive cars that can go sixty miles an hour when the traffic congestion keeps the movement of vehicles down to less than the speed of a horse drawn carriage. Example: average speed (non rush hour) in London is 19 kph (12 mph). Having smaller, more maneuverable vehicles would likely de-congest traffic as well.
