  • Time to tear into my lathe, it hasn’t been working right. My good friend and fellow RUclipsr Dale Derry from Build Something Cool stops by to give me a hand. Here we pull apart the lathe’s apron, clean and fix the carriage and solve a machining mystery. At least it shouldn't take as long the next time if you have to take things apart. Looks like a nice repair and good excuse to get in and make sure the innards got cleaned.

How did you guys stay so clean? Every time I work on my machines I look like a coal miner! Glad you all got it sorted out. That cantilevered gear is kind of sad though, a thru shaft would have been much better, maybe no room for that though.

That was going to be my comment as well. I have to wear a chem suit when I dissemble my lathe. Dale is always clean.

I actually saw Dale dirty once!! If only I had a camera when he was here!! I think he had forgotten what real work was till he got a hold of some old barn lumber. By the end of the day it looked more like it had gotten a hold of him!! lol

    Hi
Great video. I'm about to tear into a DoAll 13x60. You all buzzed thru separating the apron and the saddle. Any chance you could describe what you did in a bit more detail? I suspect mine's different-but the same, if that makes any sense. I was glad to see you could let the apron hang rather than taking all the stuff that goes through it apart.
    Thanks again

When I need to give a repair completion time update - If I think it will be done in 2 hours I usually double the time. Although if you really want to be impressive using a multiplier of 4 has worked too.

just curious.. if lock tite works better as liquid applied to the screw and installed or if a dab is deposited on the threads and allowed to set like some bolts that come with lock tite already applied. its just a thought.
