    Thanks for watching Larissa. When swallowed, venom can be broken down in the digestive system, so unless it is injected directly into the blood stream it is not going to do any damage.

    Imagine this beautiful bird as tall as a giraffe and a beak twice as large, set time back to the Late Cretaceous and you have a Quetzalcoatlus with probably the same lifestyle.

      Funnily the opposite happens as ground hornbills have a habit of attacking their reflections and in the process breaking windows.

    In this case, the voice over is not overly scripted. For a more authentic feel, we simply asked our cameraman to talk about his experience filming these animals.

      I wonder about how smart these birds are, their brain is probably smaller than their eye.
      but on the other hand bird brains are pretty effective, a three year old child needs ten times the brain volume to be as smart as a parrot or raven.

    I think the strong digestive acids in the bird neutralize venom. Probably it even becomes a digestive aid as it is for the snake itself. That's only my theory.

    • @jrodowens
      @jrodowens 6 лет назад +2

      My understanding is that (at least most) snake venom is inactive unless it enters the bloodstream of a living thing, so can be digested relatively safely even by humans as long as no ulcers are present in the mouth, throat or stomach.

  • @TimG57867
    @TimG57867 7 лет назад +7

    Gotta pity snakes sometimes. They go through the trouble of evolving toxic venom yet loads of creatures still gobble them up anyway.

    • @martialkintu2035
      @martialkintu2035 5 лет назад

      Well, that's why they have the venom. Without it, they'd be pretty much useless.

    • @Ecob16

      Venom needs to be injected into the bloodstream, it is poison that kills you when consumed.

      Well it mangles them with it's beak so it doesn't have to worry about that. If it swallowed a live Puff Adder whole that was uninjured I guess it could go very badly for the Hornbill.
