I agree, the album version, for me, has the best guitar solo I have ever heard. This takes nothing away from all our other great guitar heroes--with all due respect! Still, what a man, song, and guitar player---just excellent!!
Let’s be honest, Venus Isle is extremely unrated. But that’s why I love it! This song literally introduced me to Eric Johnson. And it happens to be my favorite Album. We all know his other albums are commercially successful but I tell not just guitar fanatics, but musicians in general, listen to Venus Isle. Yeah you can tell it’s he’s signature tone, but there is an underlining beautiful majestic theme to it and it feels unique. Just my opinion but it’s also like symphonic rock. Love the performance as well.
As I remember at the time there was "disappointment" from the critical quarters, shall we say, when this was released. It had been such and extended time since since "Musicom" and there (again shall we say) expectations and - more importantly - assumptions. Eric's interviews and comments about the recording of the LP were both illuminating and mysterious (in a way). I think you have it right on "underlining beautiful majestic theme" of the LP. You can always go back to it and get that. As for this song...it hit me right in that spot the very first time I heard it, in many ways it was my way into the LP as a whole. Saw him on the tours before (including and incendiary show on the "Musicom" tour at The Warfield in SF where it felt like the show just kept building and spiraling on itself - the purest musical magic), and the tours for this and after. One of those musicians I can always turn to when I need that push to explore...that something extra.
I don't know sometimes if guitar community folks realize how hard it must be to switch from chimey cleans to 'singing allegro' the way EJ does. And 'album purists' need to understand how different and interesting live performances can be.
Being an "album purist" shows a deeply ignorant approach to Eric Johnson's music. Those people need to dive into Jimi Hendrix' world and find out what makes EJ tick; such a product oriented understanding of anyone's music is soulless and misses the point.
I first saw him in August '93 at the paramount theater in MSG with my father. He said it was too loud with the amplifiers. Maybe so but it sounded great. I saw him on my own at the former BB Kings blues night club in July '05 the ticket was $35.
I think he tuned to A446? Higher than A440 I know for sure. The midrange on that new custom shop strat is magical btw. That dirty rhythm is my favorite version of that sound so far. His lead is a little more dry but it’s so full and you’re hearing him, not the effects. We don’t deserve him. Truly a master.
Although I agree with your thought, I'd like to point out that you must understand music should touch your soul. If only album productions touch your soul, then let it be. Not everyone is interested in the hows or whys or even music theory itself. Regards!
Thanks for posting. Agree with comments . Always wanted to see him play this. One of the best solos of his career. That says a lot about all his fantastic songs. I have followed him since his Electromagnet days. In Austin ,I've seen him "5 times" in the 80's and 90's before Alien Love child group. Should be in the Hall of Fame. Yes, Im a year older than him.
Wow... couldn't believe this video came out. Wasn't expecting this song because I've never seen it performed live as well. :smiling ear to ear while watching: Thank the heavens for RUclips!
It is just unbelievable what the man does live.. Playing the most complicated things and singing and switching sounds all together.. And this is just one song on the set.. CRAZY I want to see him live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Venus Isle is your best album Mr Johnson. It is absolutely perfect! Every song is stellar, with some of the best solos I've ever heard. A masterpiece through and through.
Such a difficult song to play live and that original solo on the song is practically impossible to replicate even for Eric himself, thanks Eric to share this song! i have been waiting for so long to hear it live.
@@eduardofernandezdiaz5264 not sure why one would look to a live performance like that, but there are plenty of videos of the studio version on youtube...
Eric I wish you would have played this when I saw you in Manhattan last year! Sooo many emotions for me tied to this song! It's AMAZING to hear it get some love!!!!
I tried to count all the notes in Eric's solo. I got 37,412 (give or take a few). He was really holding back on this one! Super cool to see a live version of this one - among my favorites on Venus Isle.
I still have the original cassette from '96 but have needed a cassette CD player since 2011. They're difficult to get these days so these videos suffice greatly for now
A very nice pop song, I just needed to listen it again, beautiful vocal sounds and what the heck, chunky 60s neck in strato and its possible to play fast like he does...wow again and again...great playing after this I will move to finland, but Im already there, lol.
Oh my fuckin' God, I love the album solo version of this song but this took it to another level. Man, what great intensity, control and expression. What I admire most about Eric is his great uniqueness and individuality, not to mention his massive work rate. Goose bumps all the way. Thank you.
Wow, first time to see a video of this performed live! I remember the studio cut being in the key of F, looks like this one is played a half step down.
That tone is so clean, Clorox had to file for bankruptcy.
lol, :-)
And Mr Clean had sex with Windex !!!!!!!
One of the best guitar solos ever on the original version. Hard song to sing too. Nice to see a live version pop up!!

@@dennismcdonald4505 the second solo is a masterpiece, as big as the song itself

100% agree.
My favorite album Venus Isle and then Ah Via Musicom

So true.

Eric is living proof that you can have immense technical abilities, raw feel, and soaring tones all in one package.

What a live version! I've listened a hundred times this song and I lvoe this version. The synthesizer makes a good complement. Great version!
Playing such solo with clean tone and without messing up a note takes big balls and insane skill
RIP Vince Mariani. What a beautiful song he wrote for Eric.....and what amazing solos Eric played to honour this song ❤️✨✌🏼
Wow... couldn't believe this video came out. Wasn't expecting this song because I've never seen it performed live as well. :smiling ear to ear while watching:

It's great to finally see how you play these solos. Eric Johnson, you will always be a source of inspiration.
Dave Scher is an amazing guitar player too!

Eric Johnson's dynamics are so good it almost sounds like he's paying backwards sometimes
One of my Eric Johnson's favorite song!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The top top top top lord of the electric guitar
This is one of my favorite Eric songs. Venus Isle has been an awesome álbum.
Such a difficult song to play live and that original solo on the song is practically impossible to replicate even for Eric himself, thanks Eric to share this song! i have been waiting for so long to hear it live.
The three people who gave this a thumbs down need to re-evaluate their lives.
A Rickson Gracie profile pic and commenting on an EJ video...you sir have good taste I like your style lol
I came looking for an interpretation similar to the studio album, this is still good but I’m somehow disappointed.

Love this song, hits hard and wonderful.
Like fine wine brother.
Amazing maestro.
The solo is so intricate, but soars above the high energy level of the rest of the band. How does that happen?
This is my influence in music Eric Johnson style licks are so very unique and very underrated! 👌🙌🙌👍 Hands down to the maestro!
I tried to count all the notes in Eric's solo. I got 37,412 (give or take a few). He was really holding back on this one! Super cool to see a live version of this one - among my favorites on Venus Isle.

I dig how Roscoe is center stage. You can tell everyone in the band greatly respects him. Excellent performance. Love camera work and the vibe!
