Where do you start? Every band that Eric Johnson plays with are just top-shelf musicians. Virtuosos who all play to support each other. What an absolute treat.
There is not one video or recording that I have ever found of Eric from back in 1981 with Kyle Brock and Bill Maddox. That was the best that it ever was. I used to see him in a small club for $1 on Sunday nights at Sneeky Pete's in Dallas back in 1980 and 1981 and it was mind blowing.
It only took you 9 months to post another video. We missed you Eric. Seriously keep up the good work. You inspired me to pick up and put down the guitar. Edit: I picked the guitar back up it’s just when I see him play this good I feel like I have so much to learn.
One of EJ's best. This song has everything in it. Rock, jazz, blues, soul, slide guitar, beautiful melody, and fuzzy guitar solos that are darn near perfect.
Man, what a great steady groove, love it how the drums set in at the beginning! Eric's jamming never gets boring IMHO, always extremely melodic. Love the jazzy feel to this one a lot!😃
I'll never forget the first time my guitar teacher introduced me to this song back in 1997, I had no idea a guitar could produce such a range of amazing sounds. ❤
Seen Eric about 10 times, once at the Paramount decades ago. If you get a chance to see Eric, one of the greatest guitarists and song writers, do it. You will enjoy it...💯 🔥🎸🔥
I love how this composition didn't just become a recording, but a live portal to Manhattan, it did change a bit in this performance, but the older part still remains ❤
Watch EJ play is always a pleasure. So juicy and delicious guitar tones... And his playing... Amazing! Only he can pull that off. Congratulations and please keep on with what I like to call: "music with a Soul".
Johnson is the maestro. He makes it look easy, doesn't he? First time I heard him, I thought it was two or three guitarists playing together! All good wishes.
I saw Eric Johnson during the ‘Ah Via Musicom’ in 81 or 82. (On a side note it was on a double bill ticket: $22 for Steve Morse one night and Eric Johnson the next. Those were the days.). Anyway, after a late start Johnson started really tearing up the place. During ‘Desert Rose’ he launched into an extended improvisation that was simply awe inspiring. At first I was following him. Before long he moved beyond my comprehension. A little while later he moved beyond THE BAND’S comprehension. They dropped back into the original grove and waited for him to come out of wherever realm he was exploring. After a couple minutes he suddenly lurched and looked up as if somebody had tapped him in the shoulder and told him it was time to come home. Forty years later and I’ve never again seen someone so possessed by the muse.
I was late to receive the good word of "Manhattan." In my younger days, when Venus Isle came out, I played the album through, and this felt like elevator music to me. I was too young and immature to understand, to feel, to get it. Some time, probably around a decade ago, I gave this another listen, and it clicked. The genius and the heart of this song revealed itself to me. Now, I simply turn to this track and surrender myself to the sheer towering musicality of it all. As always, Eric's music has led me somewhere I didn't realize I needed to be. My essential soul owes him for generations of music that continue to reach inside me and speak to truths of life and love.
Way to make that Strat sing Eric! Thanks for all of the great tunes! Been listening for over 30 years now, and you sound just a wonderful and fresh as the first time I heard you play!
Total respect for Eric always soloing off script and just letting the song take his fingers where his heart leads him.
I'm a fan. Eric is legend
Eric Johnson Makes me both want to Quit and Practice all at the same time
Nope! he makes me look for that perfect Tone, for all Music I play!
If I had a what? fender Cyber Twin? And his hands! Ha! Love you, Eric Johnson!
That, kids, is how you play guitar. So melodic!
Eric is Legend of course you know if you see his name, then it's going to be awesome👍
When Eric takes a dump it comes out in a melodic way. Soul in his shit. Beautiful.
I moved to Austin in 1985, I asked who’s the best guitarist in town and everyone said, Eric Johnson. Turns out they were right and he still is.
This start of this comment made it sound like a bro down
I applaud Eric for jamming on the intro like that, taking some chances with a tune that’s normally so structured. This is excellent!
Eric doesn't play tinkle dink shit. I love this music.
His fingers are still Young..🙌🏻
Where do you start? Every band that Eric Johnson plays with are just top-shelf musicians. Virtuosos who all play to support each other. What an absolute treat.
Ill never forget being in 10th grade and listening to this album in my walkman every day for that whole year. What memories to great music 1990
Not to burst your bubble but this song wasn’t recorded until 1996 😅
@@timheerebout8100maybe EJ play for him exclusively in his basement before EJ did the proper record on the studio.
30-some years since first being privileged to see EJ perform live, this still evokes chills. So gifted he is.
Every time I hear him, I'm reminded why he's my favorite guitarist today. Also one of the sweetest dudes I've ever met.
Seeing this song being played for the first time during the first G3 tour was simply mesmerizing and that was 27 years ago! And still is...

I would love to see this guy live some time.
It only took you 9 months to post another video. We missed you Eric. Seriously keep up the good work. You inspired me to pick up and put down the guitar.

Out of all of my guitar heroes I have seen live. Eric hands down has the best tone and seems like a vessel for the music he creates.

Speaking of Eric Johnson's lover of tone... Sounds a little like Hendrix's Midnight Lighting... Awesome!
I can't believe I've never heard of Eric Johnson before, although I remember hearing Cliffs of Dover.
I'll never forget the first time my guitar teacher introduced me to this song back in 1997, I had no idea a guitar could produce such a range of amazing sounds. ❤
