      Spanish Guitar or Hawaiian Guitar??
Both these guitars are now being converted to play Ragas by adding 20 sympathetic strings.

Thank you for the lesson, I was thinking back, I think my grandparents had like 4 different kinds of sitars. I never knew there were so many styles, they had them in their attic, and I tried them for fun a few times, but I was so little, and they are a little too big for a small child to play. I want to buy one now, I don't know what happened to theirs, but I'm older now and "Sitar was actually my grandmas maiden name, it was her parent's family last name, so I feel compelled to have one now, it's my mission to buy one eventually. I took a few guitar lessons, but I never advanced or got any better I hope the sitar echos some good sound if I ever get one again!

EHX have got a guitar effects box which emulates sitar, known as 'Ravish Sitar'. Tip for the most authentic sound is to turn 'Q' control down to zero [as is set to highest value by default]. But just like real sitar, it has to be told key AND scale in order for sympathetic strings to be in tune. Bhairav (ie. Double Harmonic Major, one of the main scales I play in); is also one of the preprogrammed scales already on there, shown as 'exotic'.

That is an option , but Danelectro , the famous guitar brand , has something called an electric sitar. It is basically a guitar but it has a bridge that touches the strings, giving it a texture similar to the sitar.

I saw you playing Thursday afternoon, when you were finished and taking a break I came up and said you sounded great.. I always thought it was a nice sounding instrument… guess the first time I heard it was on Norwegian Wood. I play a little guitar. This seems way more complicated. Good job

Its heartbreaking for me that I'm from India and can't find any guru who can teach me Sitar, although there are many people here who teach Guitar (nothing against them I love that instrument too) but it's sad to see my country following the path of degeneracy. 😞

The problem is because: 1) Sitar tuning is very difficult 2) Ragas are improvisational unlike western music 3) Ragas are far harder to master

Dear Stephan, I was very interested to see your mizrab position, very much towards the end of the finger, with a long length of point projecting................almost as if the mizrab is too small for your finger. May I ask, is this a personal preference, or were you taught to adopt this method? I ask, because I was taught to put the mizrab grips back towards the first finger joint and have about an eighth of an inch projecting................this is for the gandhar pancham sitar type. Many thanks for posting , and with best regards.

Please explain how people play guitar songs on sitar, i m a new student, i tried to convert guitar tabs into sa re ga ma but it didnt worked please reply

    •  4 года назад +1

Sitar is basically a monophonic instrument when it comes to melody so guitar tabs are hard to translate. Think in terms of the basic melody of the song with Sa = tonic note. Playing songs on sitar also has to be looked at in terms of Western key signature also depending on what Sa your sitar is tuned to: C#, D or sometimes I will tune to C. Good luck!

"MizrAble" haha! badum, tssss…. Say, what kind of sitar is that you're playing here?

    •  4 года назад +5

It is an unknown maker most likely from the 1970's. It is one of my favorite sitars, i found it on eBay about 15 years ago for $90, from an estate in Seattle.
