      I was flying my Hampden earlier when we and my wingmate got attacked by a Do 217. It went for my teammate as soon as we got our first bombs off, and he took evasive manoeuvres whilst I turned to engage it. Unfortunately, 1 forward firing 7.7 doesn’t cut it but if I let it get on my six so I could attack it with 4 guns it would obliterate me with 4 20mms. I stuck to its 6, weathering the rear gunner, and returning fire with my main gun. I caused no damage and was left with 12 ammo when I ended up in front of it after overshooting, and miraculously managed to pilot snipe before it murdered me (no idea how). My engine was red so I dropped my last bomb on the artillery, and headed for the airfield. My wingmate, still bombing the last base, notified me of a Do 17 10kms out from him. Unfortunately, as I was 2km away from my airfield, I discovered the Do 17 may have been 10km from him but not from me. RIP my Hampden.

      I wish that were true. But the USAAF got a real wake up call from the two Schweinfurt-Regensburg bombing missions. Altogether they lost 137 B17's and another 200+ heavily damaged to the Germans maybe losing only about 70 fighters. The B17's were very vulnerable, even with the P47 escorts. It wasn't until the P51D came along and they had a true long-range escort to escort them over Germany and back.

    4th rule of British bombers: Casually flying past the bombing point, without realising it's actually there. This gives you the ability to come around, and attack from a side they're not expecting, thereby making sure that they will be unable to intercept with their anti aircraft, or bomb, artillery .

    The Key to British Bombers: Wellington Mk Ic Edition
    Now this is going to be a very serious guide on my experience with using the Wellington Mk Ic. I've been very hesitant to try bombers in RB (let alone British ones) since Gaijin loves them so much. Now let me get something out of the way first. Do not fly stock with this thing in RB. Grind for bombs in AB until you can get the 4K. Now we British players love two things above all else and especially when combined together, Tea and Cookies. In fact, we love cookies so much we named this 4 thousand pound monstrosity 'Cookie.' The Wellington Mk Ic is able to carry this at the cost of having it's bomb bay doors removed. Don't worry about them. You have bigger problems. At it' BR the Ic doesn't really do to bad. It's not easy to play with but it's not especially difficult either.
    You have three options for fighting them. Let your gunners do their jobs. They will need to be maxed out with accuracy and training the crew for the vehicle is not a bad idea either but they can do their jobs pretty well but only a deterrent. If you want automatic kills with gunners this is not the bomber for you. The second option is to take manual control. If you have only one enemy coming after you (perhaps trying to get an easy kill because "It's just a Wellington") then this is definitely the best option. If you're near your bomb target you will want to concentrate on the bombing instead though. In addition try to avoid sniping people. The brownings (and especially the vickers) begin to lose their kick at about 500 to 600 meters. Anything past that and you'll just make them need a new paint job, not a new plane. Another bit of advice. Aim slightly above the aircraft when your taking control and aim for the tail or pilot of the plane. If it has multiple engines aim for them instead. They will be easier to hit and will do the job quite effectively. The third option is one that you should use sparingly. If you're heading back to the airfield and you see a low altitude bomber that is headed towards your base it isn't a terrible idea to engage it if your plane hasn't engaged already. You will need the precision required with nearly every British tank (damn AP rounds) but I have taken out a Bv. 238 using very carefully shot brownings. You can also help any fighters that are being engaged by just simply being there but I don't recommend it.
    Last but not least the important part, bombing. You need the Cookie to be competitive in RB. The lack of doors sucks but the atomization potential is worth it. Now when you fly make sure your fellow bombs know that you're carrying a 4K so they don't try and come with you and waste their bombs. You don't need them. Once you're in the air you need to pick a base and fly in straight line toward it. Stay at 3 km unless you see fighters that are both higher than you and coming at you quite quickly. If they are at level consider the options above. If they are lower don't worry about them until they are within 1 km of you. You've reached the base though. Bomb away! Now because you're in a wellington your speed should be low. Start a flat turn towards your nearest airfield with combat flaps out. Once your in the right direction raise your flaps again and begin a descent until you are at 450 km IAS. Then lessen it until you find a comfortable angle where you aren't gaining or losing speed. Cruise back to base and attack any fighters coming after you. If you see a Bv. 238 say "Hi" for me.

The Lancaster is a beast at base/airfield bombing, the Wellingtons 4.000 pound bomb destroys hole groups of tanks, the Stirlings 27 bombs let you clear a front line mission without help, and the Sunderland is actually a disguised heavy fighter.

    interestingly the Lancaster and Halifax could turn tighter than a spitfire. out climb bf110 in a corkscrew and carry 3 times the bomb load as a b17 . they could also bomb as precise at night as daytime thanks to the bombing radars they had . note the bulge on the underside of the Halifax. the Wellington was extremely durable in real combat too. it's design we ingenious.

      +Fatbeardedfish it takes about an hour for someone completely new to building and all the individual parts have warranties, I can't stress enough how worthwhile it is to get into building. Building and using your very own PC is perhaps the most rewarding experience for someone into tech.

    I quite enjoy the Halifax. An amazing gunship. Basically a before it's time AC130.

  • @PROkiller16
    @PROkiller16 8 лет назад

    The Halifax is probably by far the best British bomber. It carries the highest bomb load of it's respective BR (and the Sterling that comes after it only have slightly more tonnage), its pretty fast and it takes the Hurricane Mk.IIb approach to solving the .303 BB pellets problem and that is just more guns with 8 that can fire to the rear compared to the 4 or 6 the other bombers have.

    In Real life: in optimal range two 7.7mm's in the lancaster is enough to cripple a Bf 109/ Fw 190 to persuade it to break off in just a 2 second burst. with more 7.7mm's it could make the plane no longer airworthy (such as longer burst time or 4 x 7.7mm+).
    In WT: 15 second burst, enemy now has an oil leak.

    The best British alternative to chaff is chuff. A good positive attitude about your current predicament may possibly lead to success. Additionally, being chuffed is a completely alien feeling to a German. Chuff. Improves Allied morale and confuses the cold heart of the hun.

      It kinda makes me wonder if film makers just use it as a running gag as well, like the Wilhem scream or they seriously think it adds to the dramatic effect... like swords making a metallic schwing when drawn out of wooden/leather scabbards or completely random cocking noises on firearms etc.
      (probably the latter though)
