Makes me miss a railroad I never was around to see. SP built my local line (Mojave Subdivision) you can see the SP logo on many of the bridges. Without the SP I don’t know where I would be as an enthusiast. There were so many innovations that came out of this railroad that shape modern railroading, especially in Southern California. I miss SP, even though I never met it.
“As long as there’s a U.S.A. SP will haul the freight.” God, I wish that would be true. As for now, It’s still somewhat true, with many crews out of Bakersfield having started back in the SP days. SP is alive, but I worry about when it fades.

Lyrics: When they drove that golden spike in 1869
It opened up the American West to the Southern Pacific Line
A thousand miles of wilderness, heard the hammer's ring
And voices of the gandy dancers sing
Southern Pacific, roll on, roll on
From Chicago through the Rockies, America's your home
Portland to New Orleans, all along the golden crest
Southern Pacific, the spirit that won the West
On spikes and ties laid down in time to some old fiddler's reel
We're forever stitched together with a million miles of steel
Right on the clock, the rolling stock helps keep this country great
As long as there's a USA, SP will haul the freight
Southern Pacific, roll on, roll on
From Chicago through the Rockies, America's your home
Portland to New Orleans, all along the golden crest
Southern Pacific, the spirit that won the West
The Cotton Belt, the T&L, the Denver Rio Grande
With all the others proud and strong, coupled hand to hand
Pulling every grade and curve, a single heart and mind
Making sure the job gets done out on the SP line
Southern Pacific, roll on, roll on
From Chicago through the Rockies, America's your home
Portland to New Orleans, all along the golden crest
Southern Pacific, the spirit that won the West
Roll on big iron lady through the mountains and the plains
Roll on men and women with tradition in your veins
Keep the drive wheels turning all across this great land
Blow that whistle loud and long, the future's in our hands
Southern Pacific, roll on, roll on
From Chicago through the Rockies, America's your home
Portland to New Orleans, all along the golden crest
Southern Pacific, the spirit that won the West

Its so sad that the SP basically was the railroad that innovated so much into shaping the rail of today. From developing the first diamond to building the Tehachapi Loop which is now used by the UP and BNSF, to many more innovations they contributed to the industry and ideas that later other railroads used, its such a shame to see it start to be erased. The SP basically built California, it built LA and San Francisco, you can still see their logo on bridges they built all over CA and basically all street running in CA was SP, the SP had no boundaries or obstacles it couldnt cross, thats why roads were built along the SP rail lines, you can also thank SP for the Alameda Corridor right of way. SP doesnt get enough credit for all they established, SP should have been the one to buy up the UP, not the other way around.

@@KCSRailstudios i know but i think one thing that did affect the SP alot was the beginning of outsourcing manufacturing as well, since the SP ran north to south mainly. It mainly served local industries within the US, for further distribution within the country, in LA its former tracks and branches would mainly run along industrial areas and you can still see track remains next to abandoned or converted warehouses, same with former SP tracks here in San Diego. It was a railroad that loved to serve the local economies

The sp yard over in San fransico. Still has its roundhouse although in a much sadder state as it lost its roof and has dirt bike tracks on it
In fact you can still see the switch that lead to the yard
There’s even a old southern pacific Pullman coach over in San Jose
    With a few other locomotives
