my opinion is that 1985-1996 was an amazing era.part of the 80's and the 90's really left a mark on me as far as rap and the dj scene.I'm 52 and i grew up when rap music first became big with 1979 classic hit "Rapper's Delight".I was 10 going on 11.I was a teenager when Rakim and Kane hit the scene and a full fledged adult when the west coast started Their dominance in the 90's.even back in the 80's(the rise of the crack era),Rap music definitely flourished, but U also during that era had to be careful because the streets were full of predators that would steal on for your chain.coat, and glasses that were popular at the time.

The others were saying no, but the same guy saying no was the same person saying you remember that feeling when shook ones came out. Which proves you need to be alive during that time to get the real feeling if what was going on at that time. The question should be, what ten years was the best in hip-hop so then it can really be a personal opinion.

Very good debate Math. As a generation X dude from Harlem, I’m going with the 80’s as the preeminent and most influential rap era! Like your man said, Slick Rick is a legend just off one single and one album. He’s the greatest storyteller ever! Eric B & Rakim, LL, EPMD, Whodini, BDP, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe Dee. They were real rap superstars! The 90’s had some ill production and rappers of course but too much emphasis on the street life and not enough originality in subject matter and imagery gives the 90’s the L to the greats of the 80’s. Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z have great material but none had the “superstar” juice of the aforementioned artists of the 1980’s. That’s facts! Nobody wanted to be MOP or Mobb Deep. But niggas wanted to be LL Cool J and Rakim and Big Daddy Kane! Facts 💯🙌

90's for me. I love and respect each era tho. I'm Hip-Hop till I leave this form and beyond. Gotta meet the Dilla's n Guru's, Pac's, ODB's, BIG L's and all the other ones that almost make me shed a tear if I start naming from Sean Price to y'all know DOOM n Prodigy =( DMX and many many more legends and pioneers we lost in the last couple of years and before..
But yeah, I guess simply by nostalgia nothing can top the vibe that 90's Hip-Hop gives me. A slight edge to 90's NY grimy boom bap. But I also always loved sounds like Detroit Hip-Hop and of course West Coast G Funk influenced stuff.. Just skills.
Early 2000's was kinda dope 2 because production was on a high high level, but emceeing didn't advance like the production, till well.. we now have things like mumble rap which is purely based on melody and vibe instead of pengame.. But even in this era, crazy emcee's arrive. Real Boom Bap sound is alive and kicking.. And even other area's and "subgenres" got hitters.

Rocafella, ruff ryders, g unit, cash money, desert storm, state property, etc. There was a lot of great shit in the early 2000s and a lot of legends were made in the early 2000 that have a major imprint on today’s rap

They did things i didnt realize you could do or even were allowed to talk about with rap music.

I think it is, because every style is represented in abundance, which has never been the case in previous eras.
Yes, there has always been synth based, sample based and even live instrumentation, but not in the abundance that is available today, because there was a very limited number of producers because the cost of entry into music production was so high and also many of the producers who are now considered legends were still in the early stages of their careers and learning as they went along.
Today the cost of entry into music production is so low, that even a kid still in school can download a free or cracked DAW and vsts, make a hot beat, upload it to RUclips, have it used by an established rapper and become a professional producer literally overnight (although that's extremely rare and uncommon, it IS possible with the internet). That simply was not possible in the 80s or 90s or even the early 2000s.
