      Yeah. My personal favorite suicide leaper is uxie tho because yawn into memento almost guarantees I can set up a sweep with my next pokemon.
      Memento not only punishes switching away from the drowsy pokemon, but stops rapid spin and switch attacks (most often u turn, which is super effective)
      if they do switch it's not as bad as an asleep pokemon if they just choose to live with the stat boosts, allowing them to maybe possibly take out a sub in one attack thus stuffing the whole strategy.
      if they put up their own sub tho you've lost the interaction and need to manual switch away with shame because yawn and memento are blocked
      also memento can miss for some reason, so watch out for evasion if you're in a match where that's applicable

      I wasn't playing competitive Pokemon in Gen 6-7, but I do remember that for a while Quagsire was jumping between tiers. (Quagsire is Uber, oh wait, it's actually useless so now it's NU. See, my favorite thing to do with Azelf was to take advantage of most people's expectation that it would go boom after a turn or two. Because of course, the thing to do if you suspected an incoming explosion was to put out Ferrothorn, which would ordinarily force an Explosion set out. So of course, I didn't run an Explosion set. I ran a conventional offense set that carried the move that a lot of people seemed to forget that Azelf learns: Flamethrower. Bait in the Explosion-expectant Ferrothorn walls, then burn them to a crisp.
    EDIT: a word, Christ autocorrect

  • @kieranbennett7453
    @kieranbennett7453 2 года назад +181

    My follow up question seeing this is why wasnt azelf retroactively moved back into UU? If the rule to ban late tier changes was made in direct reference to azelfs steep rise for one tournament, it feels logical to allow for azelf to return to its competitive realm. Very minor adjustments have occurred in other generations before after the gates are “locked”, so changing just the one 6 years later seems fair.

    • @stuff26262
      @stuff26262 2 года назад +19

      If I were to guess, it is cause those other pokemon were an extremely important staple in the tier they were in. Removing them would change the tier a lot and would take a lot of adjusting that would not be possible near the end of a generation. I'm not extremely sure so don't quote me on it though

    • @darthhydreigon820
      @darthhydreigon820 2 года назад +9

      the rule change was because many tiers in SS were going to lose tier staples near the end of a gen and be unstable otherwise which the rule change now prevents that as SS RU will possibly no longer lose crobat, SS UU wont lose rotom-w, slowking, and excadrill, etc

    One of the first teams I made in Showdown was an ORAS OU Explosion themed team, and Azelf was my favourite lead. Life Orb Explosion hit so hard once you set rocks up, and being fast enough to flinch things with Zen Headbutt or quick U-Turn out of a potential Pursuit switch-in can earn you a massive advantage.
    For those wondering, this was the team:
    - Azelf (YaPlayedyAzelf)
    - Landorus-T (Pop-Pop)
    - Weezing (Boomer)
    - Onix (Onixpected)
    - Glalie (Frostbite)
    - Snorlax (Fat Man)
    Onix was my favourite in the team, being a Sturdy + Weakness Policy set with Rock Polish to get off an Explosion or (admittedly weak) EQ or Stone Edge. Weezing was there to annoy stall teams, with Taunt and Pain Split for things like Chansey and Skarmory, and it being the only member of my team without Explosion.
    When playing an Explosion team, you want to gain a numbers advantage and then strategically trade mons with Explosion/Self-destruct to win. Heavy physical beaters such as Lando and Azelf were key, while Glalie covered the special side and Weezing was the stallbreaker of sorts. I was still a competitive Pokémon novice, but that team proudly carried me to 1400 on my first ladder trip :)

    Azelf in Gen 4 was always so fun, I've always loved using the more unorthodox sets like Choice Band and Nasty Plot. It's lowkey pretty versatile and super fun to use, might try to make it work on BW Psyspam in a ladder video or something 🤔

    In early gen 8 I used a succide lead Arena Trap Dugtrio (before Arena Trap got banned ofc) since Dynamax was around then my strat was normally basically the same thing with the added bounus of trapping them in until I'm done (SR, Taunt/Destiny Bond, Momento, and an attacking move based on what my team needed {normally just EQ}) I had though being done one Poke would've been more impactful but the uncontested SR and the guranteed free turn or two of set-up > Dynamax was super broken and often lead to me being up 4+ mons early (lul Dynamax)

    Rather than locking old gens, seems like they should have some sort of tiering council. Seems like the best option when you dont have enough games for usage stats, and would let you finally give things like gen 4 electivire the boot from ou.

    If Azelf wasn't really an ou caliber pokémon, then why wasn't it moved to ou by technicality? Newer players might think that Azelf is viable in ou, when it really isn't. That's why ou by technicality exists, to show that something is ou when it really shouldn't and prevent any confusion.

    • @cinnasauria
      @cinnasauria 2 года назад +2

      That's actually a good question tbh. Raikou rose to OU because it saw usage as a bird spam check, but is pretty unviable otherwise. Raikou was made OU by technicality after the fact but Azelf wasn't. I think in Azelf's case it's at least a solid user of a specific role for a specific playstyle, it just isn't enough to make it OU in other gens.

      @@Coolman32381 Because ou is the standard tier. I think that something becomes ubers ONLY IF that pokemon is considered overpowered for the tier. Having a lot of usage doesn't necessarily mean overpowered, it just means its really suited for the tier ig. Hey Freezai, do you think that's possible to break kyurem black in Gen 5 Ou and making him banned or top 3 by usage? Yesterday, as a throw ayaw joke i created a team with zero knowledge of the metagame, except really for vague concept as he must be good viable against powerful rain, sand teams and drag-mag stuff. So i slapped some staples such as Jellicent-ferrothorn for walling purposes, Scarf terrakion, rapid spin excadrill improving my match-up against sand, then I tried Abomasnow just for the following one trick pony: Choice specs Blizzard Kyurem Black. The theory behind this is that, with AN ABSOLUTELY MINIMAL INVESTIMENT in attack, kyurem black's outrage is still stronger than Salamence's Outrage, but instead of running him choice band with last move special coverage, I run him choice specs 3 special moves for maximun coverage in blizzard (which should still have 120 bp) earth power, and shadow ball. 120 special attack is still ridiculously good because we are talking about OU, and we all know the immense stats that Black has. While k've realized now that ferrothorn is still a nuisance without hail up, so shadow ball might be eventually replaced by a hp, this set in theory cracks open OU, because he can now threaten every pokemon with coverage including steels, while before... eh... but i just can't get going on for the moment. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE THAT REPLICATE MY GENIUS AND DETERMINATION TO BREAK OU

    • @NICOCLASH

Dusknoir and Electivire stay "OU" for well over a decade after the prank is over, Azelf is taken from UU where she was great, and somehow this kinda stuff can be ignored while they decide tier changes like Latias in DPPt or banning Gems in BW. They've gotta be realistic with tiering on old gens and not just end it when the gen is over. The jannies gotta do their jobs

    Yall make up all tiers anyway its all unofficial so if yall could do whatcha want instead of being slaves to your own rule sets. Dont need to change the rule about rising/falling in the late in the gen...
    This was a rare case just address these cases as they come instead of overreacting and making rule changes
