Our Indian brothers have also hugely inluenced our cuisine, just leave it alone there's no need for the hate. British food is warming and filling; hearty as is gets. We embrace our Indian influences and how lucky we are, but actually Tikka Masala is not Indian, it was created by the Brits! We meet, we greet, we spice our society with multi-culturism, and that's behind it all, but yes, oui, ja, Tikka Masala is devised by Europe/Brits, not India... but utterley based on their teachings! I love India. I love the world. I love Europe. I love the Americas. All continents. But Indian bliss blended into mainstream Western fayre is like; ham and cheese, peanut butter & jelly and roast beef an gravy. Perfect partners like artisan bread, cheese and pickle.

By most accounts Chicken Tikka Masala was invented in Glasgow, and the deviser was Pakistani -- but then in the UK "Indian restaurant" is used as a generic term, even though most such eateries are in fact owned and run by Bangladeshis or (especially in Scotland) Pakistanis. It's no big deal, even to the restaurant owners themselves! It's interesting to compare the situation in India itself, where most of the highly popular "Chinese restaurants" are actually owned and run by Indians.
Melorca: I think we could both be right, inasmuch as Ali Ahmed Aslam, the person usually credited with the invention of the dish, came to the UK from East Bengal -- at the time was a part of Pakistan -- in the 1950s. Bangladesh (the former East Bengal) won its independence from Pakistan in 1971, which was about the time that chicken tikka masala was created.
I live not far from Birmingham and it's cool to see you enjoy yourselves in Brum. You might know already but we had a big wave of immigrants from India back in the day and they brought their food culture with them. As a result, some amazing Indian food was developed here, and Indian food is basically part of our culture. If ever I'm abroad and I need a good meal, I always search for the nearest curry house. Weirdly, it makes me feel at home, even though I'm white as milk. Great channel and great video!
Curry is seen as our adopted National Dish here in England most people love it and I know lots of guys who seem to have unofficial competitions of who can eats the spiciest dish when they go out to eat! I actually can’t take any heat as it kills my taste buds and I can’t taste anything after spice hits my mouth and therefore I mostly eat a Korma unless I go to a curry house that actually has other mild options which is quite rare. My husband however loves spicy food the hotter the better he says! Glad you enjoyed the experience it maybe Indian but it is also part of our culture now too.😁
the dip initially was a raw mango pickle. Indians dont usually gulp it down like that. Its supposed to be an accompaniment with your food. A piece of it should last an entire meal coz its that potent

that pickled vegetables as you called it was probably lime pickle, so that big chunk you thought might have been a pepper would have been a chunk of pickled lime skin and all.
I honestly love my city. It really is a great place to be. It used to be a dump, but it's changed completely now. Great curry house you went to, I've been a few times. It's a bit expensive though, you can get just as nice food in plenty of places around the city a bit cheaper. But it a lovely restaurant and well worth the visit. So glad you've come to Birmingham. And the peak district is beautiful, I'm sure you will like it there also.
Yeah Gulaab Jamun does has remote cousin of cheese as its base along with small amount of wheat flour to hold it together, in it, its called khowa(high in protein). Khowa is prepared with milk just like cheese but in a different way.
Yeah, us Brummies invented the balti. It's so weird seeing these places like Birmingham International Train Station where I go everyday from New Street to get to the NEC for work.
I'm from the Midlands originally and Lamb Rogan Josh is my regular choice of main course if I'm at an Indian restaurant. It varies from place to place but when it's good it can be breathtaking! All over the Midlands (I lived in Coventry) there are world class Indian restaurants and they can be very good value for money. I recommend pistachio kulfi (Indian ice cream) for desert... it's divine! Your reaction to the ice cream reminded me of my first time! Gulab Jamun is nice but I only enjoy a small mouthful or two because it's so sweet. I could eat pistachio kulfi forever! Thank you for giving Birmingham such a good review. The Midlands is often overlooked and underappreciated.
Hi Eric and Alison glad you finally had some fun in the uk (after what looked like a disastrous beginning in the uk) and yes in the uk we do LOVE a good curry. When you come back to England (in June?) in the peak district may i suggest a trip to Matlock bath which is home to Britains only in-land promenade. It is sat deep in a valley and is famed locally for the bikers that congregate there lining the bikes sideways on pretty much all the way down the half mile stretch of promenade. theres loads of attractions and good old fish and chips too! check out the heights of abraham while your there (accessable via a cable car ride or by an insane climb up the hill (I know they often appeal to you ;) ) once on the heights of abraham there free old victorian mine tours and a visitor center. theres loads of other cool stuff in matlock too icl- aquarium housing koi carp in the victorian age spa bath (similar to bath) hence matlock bath , a pertifying well and loads of other stuff. you could definely fill a day there for your vlog - scope it out ;)

It's said that the best Curries available in the U.K. are in Glasgow, Scotland. The Scottish born Indian restaurateurs are incredibly well respected for their high quality food.
Michael Kane Ashoka in Ashton Lane is the one I always go to when in Glasgow. Absolutely delicious, but a bit on the pricy side even by London standards.

I am so pleased that you show the culinary diversity and excellence of this country How we have embraced all cuisines from our past empire but have still managed to retain our own culinary heritage(yes we do have one) both reginal and national. I'm a Londoner born and bred and still live on the outskirts As such, I'm the official tour guide for London and it's surrounds for my family that is scattered all over the globe. I never cease to be stunned by their perceptions of our food and our weather so a big thanks to you both. PS. Great video guys. I have eaten curry in Birmingham many times, usually in restaurants down Broad Street. Other places in England which are good for curries is the Brick Lane area of East London and Bradford in Yorkshire.
Richard Miller Harrow is the best area for Indian restaurants in London as they are actually run by Indians unlike Brick Lane, which are run by Bangladeshis

If you want to have heaven experience for few seconds and want to dive into the burst of sweet and sour flavours so gorgeous, you should give a try to ‘pani puri’ or ‘ gol gappa ‘ . Both are same but two different names. This dish will not disappoint you if properly choosed.
NO. Both are not same. 🙄 Recipe varies from region to region. Some regions don't serve you with "tamarind water" ( which is the main bomb) they serve chutney instead and it tastes pathetic. Here, it's called Phuchkaa and it tastes the best because they serve the authentic recipe i.e. with Tamarind water.
Great video again. So glad you went for a curry and after a few drinks too which is definitely the best way to enjoy it. The cuisine you had I would say is British Indian Restaurant (BiR) food. It's very nice and bears some resemblance to authentic Indian food. I'm not a huge fan of Indian desserts myself however as I find them too sweet. But I have been eating Indian food for just over 30 years and just adore it... you can get bad ones, however. If you would like a more delicate type of curry I would look for an authentic South Indian restaurant, as their curries are just incredible.... I know a very nice one in Sheffield if you ever visit us. Left over curry the following day however is the best lol
The crispy savoury is called Samosa, the vegetable curry is called Vegetable Korma Syrup sweet brown ball is called Gulab Jammu. Ice cream is called Gulfi with Cardemon and Pistache Nuts

Jag you arr. Owned by Tata motors of India which also owns the Range Rover. Some models of the RR have Jaguar engines. And yes, they are awesome cars. I have never seen anyone ever off road their RR here in CA but it looked like fun.
The counterbalance on the driving course looks really cool. The veggie pickle thing you eat with your poppadoms is called Lime Pickle. Most Indian restaurants serve the same three dips/chutneys with their poppadoms, Lime Pickle, Mint Yogurt and Mango Chutneys.
The raw mango pickle dip that came with Papadum is supposed to be eaten with main course, with naan and curry. The single piece that you ate should have lasted the whole mean actually, its very salty and oily. Next time, go extremely easy on it. :) . Other 3 dips were supposed to go with Papadum.

I forget how cool Birmingham is. I also forget it's only 20 minutes away from me... I really need to make more of an effort to visit Brum more often.

Great video guys. I have eaten curry in Birmingham many times, usually in restaurants down Broad Street. Other places in England which are good for curries is the Brick Lane area of East London and Bradford in Yorkshire.
Richard Miller Harrow is the best area for Indian restaurants in London as they are actually run by Indians unlike Brick Lane, which are run by Bangladeshis
Land Rover and Jaguar were purchased from Ford Motor company by Tata Motors from India.
sgtmayhem Tata went to sell his car manufacturing business Tata Motors to Ford Motors. Ford insulted Ratan Tata by asking why did the Indians build a car if they didn't know how to build a car. He said I will buy your company as a favour to you "Indians". Tata left the meeting very upset and decided not to sell. 9 years later he was buying Jag and Range Rover from Ford. Ratan Tata didn't rub it in to Ford. He simply turned both Brands profitable. Now Tata makes Cars, Trucks, Military Vehicles, heavy machinery for India and also owns many British brands like Tetley Tea, Chorus Steel. Success is the greatest revenge.

If you want to have heaven experience for few seconds and want to dive into the burst of sweet and sour flavours so gorgeous, you should give a try to ‘pani puri’ or ‘ gol gappa ‘ . Both are same but two different names. This dish will not disappoint you if properly choosed.

NO. Both are not same. 🙄 Recipe varies from region to region. Some regions don't serve you with "tamarind water" ( which is the main bomb) they serve chutney instead and it tastes pathetic. Here, it's called Phuchkaa and it tastes the best because they serve the authentic recipe i.e. with Tamarind water.

Great video again. So glad you went for a curry and after a few drinks too which is definitely the best way to enjoy it. The cuisine you had I would say is British Indian Restaurant (BiR) food. It's very nice and bears some resemblance to authentic Indian food. I'm not a huge fan of Indian desserts myself however as I find them too sweet. But I have been eating Indian food for just over 30 years and just adore it... you can get bad ones, however. If you would like a more delicate type of curry I would look for an authentic South Indian restaurant, as their curries are just incredible.... I know a very nice one in Sheffield if you ever visit us. Left over curry the following day however is the best lol

Syrup sweet brown ball is called Gulab Jammu. Ice cream is called Gulfi with Cardemon and Pistache Nuts

Jag you arr. Owned by Tata motors of India which also owns the Range Rover. Some models of the RR have Jaguar engines. And yes, they are awesome cars. I have never seen anyone ever off road their RR here in CA but it looked like fun.

The veggie pickle thing you eat with your poppadoms is called Lime Pickle.
Most Indian restaurants serve the same three dips/chutneys with their poppadoms, Lime Pickle, Mint Yogurt and Mango Chutneys.
The raw mango pickle dip that came with Papadum is supposed to be eaten with main course, with naan and curry. The single piece that you ate should have lasted the whole mean actually, its very salty and oily. Next time, go extremely easy on it. :) . Other 3 dips were supposed to go with Papadum.

Indian meal looked amazing, I love their food too tho my partner still needs some convincing!
