I’ve watched so many diy cart videos and this is the closest thing to what I’ve envisioned building for myself. This cart is awesome.
Very cool, love those Polaris triples! Even with summer jetting that thing has to be close to 90HP. That's crazy for a gokart.
You should make front suspension to absorb the wheelie landings, which will also add more weight

He will be there for ages trying to find the right damping and spring rates. I think it would bounce too much on the front it'd be difficult to get it right first time.
Could lengthen the whole cart so that the wheels and driver are further forward of the rear axle. Needs a differential to be able to turn better.
He did make front suspension for it. It’s rudimentary at best but he did make it. Nothing more than springs (valve springs iirc) on the spindles.

We built something exactly like this - fast as hell, no brakes(just a kill switch), a lap belt for safety……..
The throttle stuck wide open on the second test run, buddy couldn’t reach the cut off in time, hit the ditch at 60+ miles per, jumped 15 feet and landed upside down. He was badly injured to his right shoulder and arm. His helmet saved his life. But that wasn’t the worst of it, the seat broke and the exhaust broke clean off and the machine was still at full throttle upside down with buddy unconscious until we could run over there and shut it off. He had third degree burns in a 6” circle to his right upper butt cheek. Burnt deep into the flesh, so deep he had to have multiple skin grafts that didn’t take and pretty much got gang green. He was in and out of the hospital for a long time. Please put on a roll bar and good brakes!

The Arctic Cat ZRT sleds as well. They were a beast, especially those Thundercats. I miss mine.
My friend’s Dad had an old Polaris triple from the early 70’s (IIRC) and it was FAST - he used to take it to the grass drags in Great Barington, Mass.
Very similar to our old Honda Odyssey that we swapped in an old Skidoo 550 air-cooled twin. That thing came Alive and we were Glad we had the roll bar! Cheap fun!

It’s a beast! And just a reminder, the stock spec jetting is for winter climate so the winter jets will be too rich in the summer
If it's jetted for winter, won't it be too lean in summer? Air is less dense when hot.

Looks like a coolant leak coming out of the cap or hose connection right near the cap. I noticed it at 10:35 and thought it was flames at first and then realized the coolant must be red in color. I’m sure you noticed it and sorted it out by now, and man oh man is that thing a ripper! Brings new meaning to rototilling the yard!

@@-_-Code-_- On the old 70's 2-Stroke Bikes we used to pull out one of the spark plugs and heat the end with a Bic Lighter until the electrode started to get nice and hot then put in back in real quick and it kick it over, it should start right up.
@@Timinator62 hmm since theyre so finicky in super cold weather im constantly pulling the plugs burning off the excess gas and clearing the chambers but ive never thought to actually warm the plug... thanks, im definitely trying this.. basically if i want to use the sled i need to leave it in a heated garage or put a space heater under the cowl for a couple hours. sleds been in my fam since it was new but as we got new machines it sat but i refused to get rid of it. ive cleaned it up quite nice got a riser on it, nice low windshield, the "paint" is clean all the graphics are good, got some plastic skiboots that fit the era, i just wish the damn thing would start easy lol.

It would be worth doing some reading on 2stroke pipe design to understand why you can't just put a random silencer on it and expect it to work. The diameter of the pipe out of a 2stroke expansion chamber is pretty important because it controls the pressure inside the pipe. If it's too big, there won't be enough pressure in there for the pipe to work properly and if it's too small, the pressure will be too high and it won't let enough exhaust gas out.
The words mid pipe and velocity still hunt me. 😂
I always rip everything apart first and then check for a spark too. My favorite part, flinging dirt in and on the shop.

wheelie a front wheel drive car for eta's on strip and ur making something wrong. all the high hp stuff able to wheelie, but their issue is it NOT to. then putting all the weight in the back and expect anything with good results except wheeling? public school aint helping i guess.

Maybe instead of adding weight in the front, extend the rear end of the chassis a bit and add a couple of alternative rear axle locations further back. (assuming this is even possible, that is) This should help to tame those wheelies and improve the steering and allow it to be driven for top speed runs (if you can even find a place to do that).
Yeah definitely need the engine further forward.. more like a mid engine machine vs hanging of the back.. but not sure with the transmission if he could do that.
Alternatively, he could cut the chassis just behind the seat and extend it by 6 to 10". That would bring him forwards and change the weight distribution enough to get a bit more front end grip, plus it would also get him further away from that expansion pipe.
Only downside is that it would also be less able to dig in and wheelie.

Agree, don’t add weight, move around the weight that’s already there.
moving the axle back or making the unit longer will not fix the steering ,, have to change the steering stops .. it won't turn right or left far enough 2 of my carts are the same way factory built ..need too get another rotation on the steering if the wheels don't hit the frame ?? turning too sharp ..
You can effectively add weight to the front by adding rake to the stance - i.e. raise the rear a little. The other thing on the poor turning is that you need more grip on the front tyres - get wider ones. Not sure how much ackerman you're running also, but that will help turning too if you're not running much.

Need not much for an engine interested speed fool to giggle, when driving one there, bought myself a small boat sports boat of 3.8 meters, bought a Suzuki V6 200 HP two-stroke and will mount it, weighs more than the hull, but giggles the whole the time 😀 from fetching the engine and even when I wake up and look out, so sick so sick a giant engine on a small hull

@Quirin M. Lol! Yea..... your probably right, the 20lbs of steel it would take to make it would definitely be too top heavy..... 😆🤣. Actual race carts are built completely differently then this, engine on the side, really wide and about 1inch off the ground.. this is not that. You sir, are an idiot.
@@JP-qq2kn like a motorcycle often being thrown clear of the vehicle is the better option (in a kart) than being stuck inside without a timely egress. If you strap in you want crumple zones that don't lead to a cage of death scenario if they do fold in on you, proper cages require a very strong chassis to support them
A roll bar without harness is worst than nothing at all. Do you really want him and everyone that drives karts to have a full cage with harness bar, harness and window nets? What about people riding motorcycles? Do they need a roll bar too? There's a point where you need to stop being a pussy and accept de risks.

@@bomber767 i didnt know twin cylinder/combined expansion chambers made the same types of power outputs as individual tuned expansion chamber power pipes. They do tend to sound better with induvidual exhausts. I think every young kid is missing out on the tunable nature of thier first 2stroke moped/bike. A bolt on expansion chamber could almost give 50% more in power gains,but you lose all the bottom end power. No one has a 2stroke for its low end torque though do they lol
@@darkshadowsx5949 i wasnt in any way trying to belittle what this kid does during any of his projects, what i meant by "how aggressive it would be" i was talking about the power delivery and how that would feel at full acceleration and the power the engine would be capable of with individual pipes. Again i wasnt criticising vasiley, it was just a passing comment on how nice 2 strokes sounds when tuned.
The turning could be improved by adding rearward caster angle in front, that way the outside front tire in a turn will lift slightly, and as the cart tilts slightly down to that corner, the opposite rear corner will lift a little and allow the tire to slip a bit.
Power to one wheel will fix it

I was thinking that too. One of the carbs might be out of sync from all that rejetting and reassembly too.
open air filters require bigger main jets (standard x 1.1) and bigger idle jets (standard x 1.1 - 1.2)

A friend of mine took a 1980s Honda Odyssey and widened and extended the frame and put a snowmobile engine on it. It was unbelievably fast and so much fun to drive, but he had to add a wheelie bar to keep the front end on the ground. Mother of All Beasts.

I had a Polaris xlt and when I tried to modify the exhaust it ran like crap. I then did some research and purchased a DG silencer for it which had the proper back pressure and worked with the stock jetting. It ran awesome and sounded amazing!! I’d totally put one on the gocart!!

Try not to rev a 2 stroke too high when not under load, these are oil injected and when the engine holds revs like that and the throttle is closed it gets less oil to the engine. Usually when these are in sleds they are spinning the track when you warm them up on a stand which has a lot of resistance.

@@jamesdellaquila1939 Yeah but that's just residual oil in the cylinders. Plus you are not suppose to rev out two strokes without a load on it. You can ask anyone, it's not a good thing to do. That's why some people that race sleds add oil to the gas as extra protection. Been around two stroke sleds since I was 3, owned a 1000cc thundercat triple. I'm just going by what the manufacturers recommend.

What do you mean under load? Like i can't go full throttle down a slope with a twostroke bike?
@@linuswellington3360 That's still under load, there is a Load being produced even though you are going downhill. In the video he is full throttling the engine with no load. If he had engaged to spin the wheels then it would be ok. They clearly tell you in the manual for sleds not to rev the engine with the belt being removed. In this video he doesn't have the wheels engaged which is why it is holding revs for that long. These engines are oil injected and the injector system moved with the throttle. So when you full throttle, it goes from full oil to idle oil when you release the throttle.

At 10:39 looks like something orange (coolant?) Is leaking near upper radiator hose. Might want to check it out.
I’ve built two carts with snowmobile motors, one was a single cyl. 19hp and the other was a 40hp twin. Both went like hell! Lot of fun. The turning issue comes from posi traction. Change to single wheel and it will turn much better. Nice cart dude!

I had this idea of making a go cart with an old snow pony snowmobile in the 79 , but had no help to weld the frame and everything that goes along with making it , I was in 9 th grade , great job on this

About 15 years ago, maybe 20, now? My buddies Wayne and Harrington had a go-kart with an 8hp Briggs, and, I called it the Hell Kart. And, that is exactly what it was.
It would get up and go. Even had a roll bar, but, it needed more of one. It would pull wheelies on the blacktop, and, drift out in the backyard. But, even though it was awesome, it was dangerous, all at once. And, of course, it only had a portion of the power that you have on yours. Have fun, but, be careful with it. It definitely has the potential to away from you, when you least expect it. That thing is gnarly! 😂

Spark,fuel and air is the saying to live by. It's saved me a ton of time. Looks like it is really rich especially since it's jetted for freezing temperatures. If you put larger air filters and the racing pipe on it that will help lean it out a little. That thing is a beast, so cool.
Learned decades ago with my snowmobile if you play with the exhaust it's a can of worms.
Besides the jetting you have to play with both clutches. Then there's the jetting for the altitude your at.
