    Put the white down first. A light layer so you don't fill the tooth. It gives beautiful slip for any pencil hard to blend. You can use whatever white you like, but a brand you know blends well is a plus. Any layer of pencil first helps, so you can also put a layer of your lighter color down first as well for a similar effect.

    Hi Pamela, I read the Caran d'Ache wooden blender pencil is created to be an addition to the full blender, because it works better for the details. The full blender would be for large areas, due to the fact it tends to blunt easily. Caran d'Ache sells the two blenders together as well.

    • @PamelasPassionforPencils
      @PamelasPassionforPencils  2 года назад

      Thank you. Yes I know they sell them together and have been wondering about this. In all the research I’ve done they seem to be the same product though. Just maybe one holds a sharper tip?

    • @michela5411
      @michela5411 2 года назад +1

      Yes, that's fine. They are the same blender, but the wooden one is easier to sharpen at a fine point, so it works better in smaller areas.

    I have used Crayola colored pencils since I was around four or five back in the late 1950s/early 1960s. They are classic pencils, tried and true but, they are so hard I could hard hardly sharpen them. Due to their extreme hardness, I reluctantly gave them away. I wish Crayola would update their pencils and reformulate them to be softer.

    Arrrgh, this is Saturday and I forgot it was Saturday. Well, I watched it back, and really learned a lot!!! I loved how the Castle arts performed, and I must dig out my blenders. I have a white Prisma in each set of pencils, more for the white than for burnishing. When I did mandalas with crayola, I always burnished them with the white crayola. This was a great tutorial on blenders and testing more pencils :D Yay Castle Arts!!! Have you ever put the blender down as the first layer so the colors of the lighter pencils will then grab with more umph? I'm going to give that a try.

    • @jeanblythe1595
      @jeanblythe1595 2 года назад

      @@karinswartz3046 Hi!!! I don't own the Brutfuners yet, hopefully next month I can get them. The Castle Arts are wax, not hard though like Crayola (which I also love). As I understand it, the Brutfuner (squares) are oil, but go down more like a wax, similar to the Castle Arts. I know all pencils are a mixture of oil and wax, so it is the way they are blended and the proportions and the specific waxes and oils that make the difference. A wax pencil has more wax than oil, but if an oil pencil goes down like a wax, it has a mixture that allows that. That is why I want to try the Brutfuners. What do you think of them?

    I recently got back into coloring and so relieved because I have only bought the Castle Arts and square Brutfuners. I'm just not so pleased at how bad the Dahle 133 is eating them away...feels like I'm sharpening my money away lol

    • @PamelasPassionforPencils
      @PamelasPassionforPencils  2 года назад +3

      The Dahle shouldn't be doing that. Maybe play with the twist knob on the back of the sharpener to create a bit of a duller lead on your pencils. Hopefully that will help.

    • @waymire01
      @waymire01 2 года назад +1

      I set mine two turns back from full sharp, the softer pencils do much better with auto stop that way. They can't handle the super thin point and break off inside, then the sharpener keeps on going to "fix" it. Auto stop will also fail if its full of shavings and sometimes it hard to tell as they pile up in the back, check it often.

      I bought a 2 pack of very inexpensive dual hole metal sharpeners (like 1” square) from Joann Fabric, and it works amazingly on all my pencils, including the squares and prisms. No waste or breakage. Do go slowly with any pencil sharpener.

  • @Mickey-jn8hz
    @Mickey-jn8hz 2 года назад

    Hi Pam, really looking forward to this video and while I have you, would you have an idea why my Dahl sharpener is breaking the leads of my pencils, not only Prismas but Polys too…..in one page of coloring I got 4 broken leads. I am hoping you will have an answer to my problem because you have been using and promoting this sharpener for some time, please don’t think I am in any way putting the blame on anyone. i have it now for less than 1 year and it hasn’t been roughly used by me.

    • @waymire01
      @waymire01 2 года назад +3

      First be sure you are not letting it fill too full with shavings, they tend to pile up in the very back and it looks like it's not too full at a glance but if you shake it a bit you will see it really is. Second, play with the point adjustment. I much prefer to back it off a turn or two, it still gives a nice point but is much less likely to break a point while sharpening.

    • @PamelasPassionforPencils

    I love my castle arts for the color selection but man I struggle. I'm doing Joanna's World of Wonders book and I ended up pushing so hard with the castle arts to get them to blend that they transferred some of the ink from the actual picture on the page to the one behind it. Which is a cool effect, but I'm hoping to avoid that I figure. I will definitely be trying my white Prisma to see if I can lighten and blend some of the colors more effectively!

    • @waymire01
      @waymire01 2 года назад +3

      I've done that except it was the colored pencil from the page behind that transferred. I was lazy and didn't use a protector page behind... luckily the page that got the color was blank and it erased ok. Went and got a page cut for those books the next day (it was the Rita Berman books that are an odd 8x8 size). I use the vinyl cover sheets they put on spiral bound documents at my local print shop and have them cut to fit, very inexpensive, reusable, waterproof, and no bothersome page hanging out of the book while I'm working in it.

      Also put a layer of the lightest color down all over first, it helps. I find the Derwent blender works wonderfully on my Castles. I have all three of the soft core sets in one big case and really enjoy them, so many unique colors.

      Hi, So I started out using Prisma with Johanna's book. The pencils blended, yet I never get a nice result when I step back and view the page. I rarely use her book because I don't feel that my colouring looks as good as I see in some of my other books. I also tried Black Widow ( also wax based) and that didn't make it look any better in fact, it. was worse. Fast forward...to two weeks ago, I pulled out the book and used my oil based Brutfuners and what a difference! I actually admired the page. Not sure if Castle are wax like Prismas, but maybe an oil based would work better for you. FYI I saw very little tooth with the Brutfuners.

    Weird question - Have you changed your camera settings or gotten a new camera? I've noticed in your videos lately, perhaps even the past month (I'm terrible with time and time frames lol so I'd have to scroll back through your videos to see exactly when this started), that any time there's movement especially when you're coloring, your hand and the colored pencil lay down looks very blurry and almost laggy? I love love love your videos and by no means am trying to be mean or anything like that! I'm just curious and can't for the life of me remember which camera settings cause this (which is embarrassing because I went to college for Media Arts 😅)

      Ah! After researching, I believe it's your shutter speed setting being too low. If you change your shutter speed setting to 1/250 and higher, it should decrease the motion blur occuring in your videos. Hope this is helpful 😊 Much love as always and thank you for this hack video!! 💞

I scooped up a pack after you mentioned them on another video and were worried that they would be discontinued. I have to agree with you that it works way better compared to the Prisma blender. It is so creamy and much softer compared to the Prisma which is scratchy and harder lead. Maybe the Caran dache has some oil in it and the Prisma is all or mostly wax. It goes over very light greyscale areas like a charm unlike the Prisma, which as you know streaks black. It is a wonderful tool and thanks for telling us about it.
