    I think a good use that would separate it from iron and redstone would be precision machinery. While iron is for high strength machines, and redstone is for electrical, programmable machines, I think copper could be used for stuff like item pipes or the new autocrafter. This is similar to how it's used irl, because it doesnt corrode and can be used in low friction alloys like brass

      I like this idea, and it already feels more in-line with how copper kind of works, Copper Rods attract lightning to a precise point, Spyglassa gives you better vision on a precise area, the copper brush allows to be precise with your digging to be able to get the loot, etc.

      That's actually a pretty good idea and something a mod does as well. I can imagine hoppers, still made of iron, would be what's required to put anything *into* the pipes, but once there they just... go. Wherever the pipe goes, I guess. I'd say a drill item, or maybe a block that breaks other blocks when powered, but Mojang seems to be against automation one day and for it the next.

    The idea of having copper used anything related to automation feels better than what I've been thinking dince they introduced copper which is that it would've made some sense to add tin and introduce bronze tools and armor as a short intermediate step between stone and iron; For those with risk averse play styles, such as myself, going into a cave or ravine without armor is something to be avoided which generally results in a lot of strip mining until having rnough iron for a chest plate and sword in addition to iron picks, introducing bronze as slightly weaker than iron would likely risk averse players start exploring sooner though bronze likely wouldn't jave any use in the later game unless some of the recipe change suggested in this video where made such that there'd be Bronze Golems, as Bronze is used directly in wrapons while copper isn't, and for the more utility automation thing, like hoppers, it would still make sense to simple use copper. Of course this now leaves tin as having no immediate use aside for combining it with copper to make bronze, however, making items that crafted using copper, tin, and Redstone that ingredients for items involved with more advanced automation like automated crafters or harvestors, blocks to simplify Redstone builds like pusle generators, or filtering blocks; Though admittedly introducing Tin & Bronze and more advanced automation blocks isn't really too different from justice saying "add a simplifed a tech mod into vanilla and you'll have a decent use for copper"

      Here's my idea for copper equipment: It should have the similar offensive and defensive abilities of iron, but missing greaves and the ability to enchant while having low durability like leather or gold. The iron that we forge in the game is a low temp, which puts it on par if not worse than real bronze. Adding tin wouldn't help because it would be more rare than iron. Copper tools on the other hand are easy to reuse, but tend to warp easy due to how soft they are.
      A copper shield would be a very nice addition. As of right now shields are locked to the "iron age". Wood and copper would make a lot more sense in the form of a round shield at less durability.
      It could be made to have almost no durability, like 1/3 of leather, but not require extra materials to repair. Or have a single nugget do a full repair (to replace the small amount of "lost" material from damage scrapes). From a balance POV that doesn't make much sense with how abundant copper is, but it's more realistic. I'd hate to add another tool block, but something like a cast furnace would work the best. The piece of equipment, one nugget, and fuel. It would have a special use for gold equipment I'll specify below. Otherwise just use grind stone with the option of using ingots or nuggets for copper and gold. Both metals are soft enough that you could hammer and grind new material into the existing equipment without heat. I would also change the appearance to not include pauldrons, or at least make them just small bits that cover the top of the shoulder. If that's paired with a round shield and helmet designed more like netherite then you really get that Hoplite look that people love.
      The lack of enchanting would still encourage the use of iron or gold when you get to that stage if you want to save on diamonds.
      I think this change needs to come with two other changes: rebalancing gold and leather armor/equipment. As of right now, almost nobody makes leather equipment. It's very low durability, and offers almost no protection. Getting enough leather to make a full set almost takes more effort than getting iron. Gold is slightly weaker than iron, way less durable, and the enchantment upgrade isn't really enough of a buff to justify it.
      I think Valheim had a good approach, leather could improve your ability to sneak. It could come with a passive swift sneak and lower detection range, kind of like the turtle shell with water breathing. Maybe even a slight fall damage protection. Using leather armor to sneak around a cave avoiding most enemies would make the armor actually have a use. If they added sneak attacks to the game it could even serve a purpose mid-to-late game. I would pair that with a slight buff to durability and a way to patch it with additional leather. Real treated leather isn't as weak as it is in game, and adding patches without a forge actually makes sense. I would consider buffing the set by one or two points. I would add one point to the chest and one to the leggings, prioritizing the leggings. This would encourage mixing sets at least slightly to break up the "slab of iron/diamond" players that is currently in game.
      I would then buff gold defense to match iron, or at the very minimum chain. Since it's the dedicated "enchanted armor" make it possible to repair it in the cast furnace using a gold nugget WITHOUT losing it's enchants. Pair that with enchanting being cheaper to encourage using enchant tables and actually using the increased ability. Then add the nerf of not being able to use mending on gold equipment only. Iron would be a set it and forget it set, but gold would allow more enchants and reparability without mending while requiring more input from the player. Iron armor could even get a buff of adding 1 point of toughness to each piece equating to half the amount diamond gets. I would then buff Gold from 11 defense to 13 or 14 and do the same for chain. This makes it at least the same or slightly better than a full set of copper + leather leggings but still weaker than iron.
      These changes make each tier of equipment have a more unique identity. Admittingly it would make stone tools almost useless, like wood without the benefit of recycling into fuel. TBF, stone tools are almost too useful now since iron is decently rare and doesn't offer enough of an attack boost to justify making anything but a pickaxe over stone. Realistically you shouldn't be using any stone tools once you have access to ore. Maybe add "stick chest armor" like in Vintage story for a small defense boost. Not very useful, but might save your life on Hard.
      TL:DR summary:
      Wood: used to get stone tools. Add chestpiece for emergencies. Possible weak shield.
      Stone: used to get copper and coal.
      Copper: used early game for cheap protection and tools without enchanting. Very low durability. Added cheaper shield for a massive skill based defensive boost. Requires less maintenance than gold, but more than all other higher tiers. No leggings, much like warriors in the bronze age typically didn't have them. That makes the total defense 10, weaker than gold. New shield option.
      Leather: used for stealth and better shield use early game. Can still be enchanted. Increase total defense from 7 to either 8 or 9. Possible low level Feather Falling built in.
      Chain: "free" and can be enchanted. buff from 12 to either 13 or 14.
      Gold: very good enchanting, requires maintenance between every few encounters. Doesn't lose enchantments from repairing. Durability may need to be nerfed further to compensate for the buff. Buff from 11 to either 13 or 14.
      Iron: better durability, early access to toughness. Defense still at 15.
      Diamond and Netherite: unchanged.

    This is a great idea, to expand the Copper Concept on what little is available.
    I would prefer the Iron Golem remaining as an Iron Golem. I feel like iron represents strength and bulk, one example is the Combat Update which changed how knockback and combos work so that the Iron Golem could not bounce, besides that, it's been in the game unchanged for so long, only until the Buzzy Bees update that you let you heal 25% of their health with an ingot, which does also mean that the Iron Golem is now a manual upkeep mob.
    I think this is what some people excuse Mojang's slow pace in updates on; marketing. Microsoft & Mojang have to think a lot about what the content their adding will do to the face of the game, how nostalgic players will react, and how it will change the kind of content they can add to the two spinoff games they're running simultaneously, Dungeons, and Legends. Heck, even the two other dead spinoff games can have an effect, like Earth almost putting the Moobloom in the game, similar to how Dungeons has the Iceologer and Wildfire. Some people like to joke that Story Mode "predicted" custom armor trims. I think it became a cutoff "don't make it look too similar or it's copying" point for the devs, because the trims are made very different from the ones in the spinoff.
    Back to copper, my idea was to use it to fix the disliked repair system. Because it's an ingot, perhaps it could substitute for iron on an Anvil or Smithing Table, or give discounts on enchantments on iron tools. It could also be mixed with gold to give better durability, which was something in the real world. Ores could even be made rarer to support this, because some people argue that diamonds are awfully easy to get nowadays and uninteresting. I think your idea for Copper Hoppers was the best out of them all: it rhymes, and Redstone, especially involving hoppers or minecarts, gets expensive quickly even with iron farms and 1.18 allowing fortune to be used on iron.
    Some people also think copper could be put into powered rails and finally make rail building cheaper, going back to the "Copper&Gold in the real world" thing. Although this does go against the principle of "this is a game where our armor is made of diamonds", minecarts are the only form of transportation where you can go AFK, so it would also fit very well with the "Copper is the automated iron" theme.

    y'know, whenever the whole copper is useless argument is brought up the only thing i can think of is quartz.
    It's existed much longer than copper but has its own similar uses. Both ores are easy to obtain but are expensive to build with, both are primarily used as building blocks, and both come with a few redstone functionalities (copper bulb, lightning rod, daylight sensor, and observer). yet copper is still more disliked.🤔

    Diamond = Durable & unchanging
    Redstone = Logic & manipulation
    Gold = Speed & accelaration
    Quarts = Light & vision
    Emerald = Wealth

    When they added the copperbulb i thought it would be cool for it to be an introduction to automation.
    Put complex things like timers, collector, maybe a conveyor belt? that work decently but require constant maintanence because they would rust away, making it only feasable in early game and later in the progression you will start to think on ways to make more traditional redstone/iron/slime based systems.
    Because in regular gameplay you have no incentive to make those things, making so one of the more abundant resources encourages you to automate things a little bit, or by alterantive use it as a building block, and with the new structure, copper would teach players the basics of the game, building, farming and adventuring.

Also its possible to cold forge copper irl so maybe an added bonus would be not needing to smelt copper ore with fuel but just process it with an item, like a pick, that would degrade in durability each time it was used for the recipe

    In Blockixel Artistry's idea video on archeology, he pointed out some interesting things about the original version of archeology shown off at Minecraft Live. Namely, the brush tool could oxidize, and items hidden in suspicious gravel would be destroyed if you overbrushed. It seems that the original idea was for the speed of the brush to be based on how oxidized it was, with oxidized ones presumably being slower and easier to avoid overbrushing with.
    When we finally got archeology in snapshots, the overbrushing mechanic was gone, and so the connection to oxidation disappeared as well. Notably, the recipe for the brush only used string and a stick at this point. Apparently, even Mojang knew that it no longer made sense to use copper in the brush recipe. It was due to feedback that they added copper back to the recipe.
    ---
    That still doesn't excuse the spyglass being made of copper, though. I do have an idea to incorporate oxidation into that item, though I'm not sure it's a good one: perhaps oxidized spyglasses could zoom in less (as if the oxidation was preventing the spyglass from extending all the way), so players would be able to pick between 4 different levels of zoom.
    Only problem is that it adds 3 (or 7 if we include waxing) niche variants of an already niche item, and even though spyglasses already don't stack, it still kinda feels like item bloat. I suspect players would rather have something like the ability to adjust the zoom level manually via the scroll-wheel (on PC), bumpers (on console), or pinching gesture (on mobile).
    ---
    Come to think of it, the copper golem would've made good use of the oxidation mechanic, and it even fits in with your copper => automation proposal. I think the Allay was the right choice in that mob vote, but of all the losing mobs, I think the copper golem would have been the most fun, simply because of how "alive" it would feel and could make your world feel. Obviously, it didn't do anything totally new, but having a little robot wander freely through your world to press random buttons you've set up to activate random machines feels and looks a lot cooler than boxed-in chicken + pressure plate chambers.

    I think copper's lack of utility isn't because there's no more mechanic to be implemented, but because Mojang is very careful (or scaredy) with the mechanic they add in the game. You can only add so much features in a game, board or video, before it completely crumbles from the unforeseen effect of all those mechanics interacting with one another.
    Unfortunately for game design, half of the work is putting features you come up with in the hand of players, not telling them what to do, and reconsider your judgement as you watch the playtestings devolve into purgatory. You would think that this is what snapshots are for, but these don't aim to fix the game design; they fix the bugs that come with coding in the already chosen, but not playtested, features. In short, Mojang effectively don't extensively playtest their ideas before they release them into the wild, if they playtest at all. This heavily limits the quantity and quality of features they can implement. Meanwhile, mods can be toggled at will, with little obligations to players, and out of the vast sea of crap, there will be hidden gems. Unfortunately for Mojang, they can't afford to release crap.
    Part of me think Mojang is too scared from community backlash, but I think this is mainly bad process and communication. It's easy to think that as a game designer, we know best, but truth is, lots of obvious details will go over the head of most experienced designers. For example, the main reason why Valve is capable of making such great games is because they playtest a LOT; to the point where the end result is unrecognizable from the idea that birthed it. I don't know if Mojang current situation (swimming in corporate money, which means it comes with strings attached) grants them the possibility to do that.

    • @scriber36
      @scriber36 3 месяца назад

      Also, current Mojang is very concerned over making features compatible among versions of the game, mostly meaning Java and Bedrock. Though, I don't really get it, as implementing the features should be quite easy. What I rather think is, that they focus on AddOns and other similar features, which don't alter the base game. Like adding a new Sponge Bob scenario and stuff. I think it's a very wrong direction. Minecraft is a game first, and a platform only after that. Releasing a handful of blocks a year feels very lazy on their part regarding the core game. I get it, they likely spend that effort elsewhere, but most people don't benefit from it. I guess makes money... but it's no longer similar to what Notch did, being involved with the base game for the sake of making it better.
      Once in a while some good ideas come, I think they executed the Deep Dark well, other than taking lots of time and many versions to add it fully. It's distinct enough and extends the ingame world in a direction feeling both natural but interesting to the game, a new color to it. But the budget of Microsoft having Minecraft, one of the most popular PC game ever, could do much, much more.
      I completely agree with you on playtesting. Games visibly missing playtesting, like The Sims 4 being a perfect example, just suck, swimming in bugs and somehow aiming to provide what people want, but failing at it miserably.
      I do think a complex tech mod level of content would be too much for Minecraft, but some new level of technology and mechanics could definitely be added with copper. Gears, golems, pipes... maybe pipes with steam... something. And doing something with The End... it's too blend. Small team modders do wonders on those areas. Mojang should not rush and feature-creep Minecraft, sure, make secure steps. But could definitely add more features. With their current workflow, I fail to see those well-thought-out features. They show mobs, won't add most of them. They say fireflies will be cool, don't add them either. They added the the Phantoms being voted, widely considered a mere annoyance. They genuinely seem not to know what they are doing, as if they would have no creativity at all. Maybe corporate mentality has totally changed under Microsoft for the worse, killing true productivity. That's what I see... and it's very sad.

    I dislike the iron golem change. I understand that as a tool it functions independently of the player, and I agree with your idea of coppers mechanical identity, but a golem is a form of independent life, giving an inanimate object life is giving it independence.
    I think that a copper golem should exist parallel to the current iron golem. It could function as a automator for some other process that could require tools perchance?

    Iron and Gold and Diamonds are also all over the place? Iron does many things both redstone related and building related, gold is for bartering AND alchemy AND multiple recipes including redstone recipes. And diamonds are SUPER random- they make jukeboxes and enchanting tables but ALSO armor trim templates.

    • @Little-rb6rb
      @Little-rb6rb Год назад +3

      iron is used for general appliances used through early to late game. gold has a more magical theme that acts as an auxiliary or boost for mid game processes. diamonds are for late-game "addendums". copper meanwhile serves 0 purpose and has 0 focus. im pretty sure theyre meant to be sidenotes usable through mid to late game-- for example spyglasses and copper as a building material. but this isnt enough to constitute it as anything useful or memorable

    • @aidanvenki8834
      @aidanvenki8834 Год назад +2

      @@Little-rb6rb this is on the idea that you ignore That Iron is used for many decorative blocks. And that Gold isn’t JUST alchemy and magic, it’s Redstone and Utilities too. Mainly powered rails, clocks, etc.
      I wouldn’t call Diamonds Addendums, as that would imply diamonds were an after thought added as a means of importance LATER, when they were always meant to be The Games most iconic ore.
      And diamonds are easily the least fluid- diamond armor and enchanting tables- but also firework rockets, Julie boxes and now smithing templates.
      Copper is actually just as cohesive as iron- cause both do the following.
      They focus on two Key Themes. The first theme being Building, like iron bars and lanterns, OR copper blocks, grates and trapdoors/doors of both types. The other theme being industrial. Iron makes rails, hoppers, anvils, observers, pistons- if it’s a redstone component it probably uses iron.
      Whereas Copper has not yet reached that amount of complexity, but that’s only because it was added just 3-4 updates ago.
      And even then, as it stands, copper bulbs are EASILY a redstone game changer, lightning rods have a sort of mechanical functionality to them, the spyglass and brush are both tools, and even the copper trapdoors and doors are technically non flammable door types that can be used in redstone builds- that don’t REQUIRE redstone to open them. Just a right click opens them.
      All in all though, most every ore is unique. Lapis also happens to make blue dye and a single block. Coal also makes torches and Campfire. Redstone is everywhere-
      Emeralds are currency, amethyst makes tinted glass, the spy glass, and also duplicates allays? Saying copper is the only material to not have a select theme is just not true.

      Although it is still a bit of a letdown to see copper as it currently is. More so when you played any modpack within the last 10 years where 90% of the time, copper plays a major part as the gateway into the mod. You can't build an IE machine without copper. You can't do anything in Thermal mods without copper. Redstone has an identity associated with signal logic. Iron has an identity associated with being part of a lot of stuff. In these modpacks, copper is associated with machinery and energy. In current Minecraft, copper is this block you use for building, or something mods use so they don't have to implement their own copper

    I think a good way to expand on the identity of copper while using what is already provided would be to have copper be the metal of fine smithing and beauty. The telescope, brush and horn are all fastened together with fine copper wire, and the copper golem displays things for all to see. I think that something like copper fastened jewelry or other such fine smithing would be a decent enough niche, especially if it came with some kind of reputation mechanic. Maybe depending on the amount/quality of jewelry you have, villagers might have cheaper costs? Or maybe jewelry could have their own brand of social enchantments, which modify the behavior of other mobs, like a pumpkin jewelry that makes endermen actively friendly and willing to attack mobs that hurt you, or one that makes creepers chill out and not explode around you.

    I can think of two possible niches for copper:
    First building. Copper is already used for building, what if it made building easier? A wrench that lets you rotate blocks, a grabber that lets you place blocks further and build bridges easier, a crate that allows you to hold the same kind of block in it, copper golems that place blocks for you somehow.
    Next is electricity. This wouldn't add to redstone but rather add to PVP. What if you had copper armor that was bad on its own, but when charged with electricity, each armor type would give a new buff. charged copper helmets would give night vision, boots would give jump boost, leggings give speed and chestplates would let you do electrical area damage. The downside is that copper armor is weak, so the player would choose between high mobility but low protection, or a stronger armor with less mobility but high protection. Copper shields are weaker than iron, but when charged they allow you to do a dash attack and deal damage electrical damage to mobs.

    I think Copper's identity was intended to fit the niche of weather given oxidization, lightning rods, and now with their connection to the breeze in the trial chambers. While weather as a feature is already pretty lacking in game Mojang could likely expand upon them making the gameworld a bit more dynamic while fitting copper in to gauge or take advantage of those conditions; items like weather-vanes and rain gauges could coincide with lightning rods and act kinda like redstone components to give us more game events to detect. Maybe they could add in wind and hot air balloons made in part with copper, that coinciding with the spyglass could help players with early game traversal and scouting. I'm sure there's more applications for this concept that I haven't come up with but it really does fit with the initial identity of the material we were presented with.

    I think a lot of people misinterpret Copper to be useless or not have a niche when it does infact already have one. We see its use a lot in many youtube videos like Hermitcraft and what not. Iron's niche is tools, Redstone is logic automation, Gold is enchantability and Nether trading, Lapis enchanting currency, Diamond upgrade from Iron, Netherite upgrade from Diamond. Copper though, it's niche is building, decoration, and visual aspects.
    See, Copper is the only ore in the game that has a ton of decorative potential, with all the different variations of building materials 4 times over any other material due to it's different stages of oxidization. The spy glass fits into this niche as it assists with the visual aspect of the game, giving us a zoom function to view things from a distance. Lightning rods help protect what you have built. That was the initial use of Copper when it was released, and because of what copper was before it became vanilla there was a ton mods that put it in a separate niche, mainly in technical aspects. But Minecraft isn't an industrial game, it's a fantasy building game with a limitation of technology. The upper limit is redstone, and copper can't replace redstone. So, instead it fills a different niche that's different to its irl and modded past counterparts. Much like how irl diamonds aren't used as armor, lapis irl isn't used to enchant, redstone isn't a real thing, neither is netherite. Copper in Minecraft is separate from expectation, as it's a part of the decoration niche now.
    As for the things like copper golem, the brush, or copper horn? Well, these were added or proposed to be added to the game /after/ the initial release of copper. It's a good chance these things were added to answer the outcry of the community. Because we got so used to copper being such a highly used and most added ore to the game by mods, we had expectations that were never going to be fulfilled because Minecraft is not a technical game in the same way these mods that use copper are. IC2, Mekanism, Immersive Engineering, etc. If you go back and look at all the mods that added copper, you'd notice a heavy lean towards modern machinery mods. Mojang quite clearly is never going to add something that advanced to the game, maybe some things from time to time like the crafter or the hopper, but full processing plants you can make in a single 3x3x3 space that can process ores, craft items, and power itself is obviously not something they're interested in adding. It was quite literally a case of unrealistic expectations the community had by their own doing, and Mojang couldn't really do much about it because of the design of the game.
    Copper's use is in visual appeal, decoration, building. That I'm pretty sure is the niche of this ore, and hopefully slowly people will come to realize this rather than be upset it's not like its modded counterparts.

Terracotta? Copper falls in the same niche as those blocks, it's a decoration material only it's a metal. Not only that, it has some limited uses beyond decoration with the spy glass and the lightning rod. The lightning rod btw has some immense use when it comes to protecting builds from lightning strikes as well as getting rare mobs and items. Copper has its niche.

      @@catsdogswoof3968 That does not mean copper needs to have more use. Everyone is assuming that just because it's a metal it has to have some kind of functional use that matches other materials.
      It is fine for what it is, it is a very extensive decorative block with 4 variants to each extensive decorative sets. On top of the fact it makes getting mob heads, and rare mob drops easier to get, protects your builds from lightning, gives you vanilla zoom, has variable light sources, lets you get items from suspicious blocks, etc. It has far in excess for its niche, far more than any other decorative block type. It does not need more blocks, it does not need more functionality, it has plenty of use and plenty of blocks. Any more is just a bonus. Seriously, take the time to think of all the current uses of Copper and all the items and blocks made from copper, take a step back and see just how extensive copper actually is. People need to chill and learn what copper actually is for minecraft and not assume it's meant to be like it's counterparts.

    Diamonds comforting amethyst: It's okay amethyst. No need to cry. I'm here.
    amethyst: I'm useful, right Diamonds?😢
    Diamonds: Of course you are useful. If Mojang added you, then you must have a purpose.
    Diamonds: It's just that players don't understand you, and just likes to mock you for no reason.
    amethyst: So what do I do about it?
    Diamonds: Just ignore them. You are beautiful the way you are. And that's all that matters in the end.

    i think it might be interesting to see copper used as a means of different kinds of transportation, such as pipes for liquids, gears and similar functions maybe as a new kind of energy system, a kind of mechanical and analog energy used for machines, similar to what the create mod did, but a bit more toned down, as an alternative and or addition to redstone for things that make no sense using redstone, like moving machines

    A big difference between Copper an Iron is quantity, Copper is much more frequent, which leads and stems from it being designed to be a Building Material, unlike any of the other ores, is one you can build with, and there's a bit of that passiveness you mention in the video on that.
    Anvils break with time, Iron Blocks only have one solid appearance and can always be crafted back into ingots, Cut Copper blocks are permanent.
    There are things you can build wit iron, but they're rather associated with security or supposed to be a little valuable.
    So in that sense, Copper already as a niche.
