obviously all of the main characters, but ive always felt that Paul Bates as "Oha" the majordomo/servant/announcer im not sure his proper title, could have stolen the movie if he had had a larger role
John Amos. The workin' man. He played the father on 70's sitcom "Good Times." He played the adult Kunta Kinte in the original TV miniseries "Roots." But I love his performance in this one. Definitely recommend the sequel. Don't wait 30+ years to watch it like we had to!
Any given supporting actor had a moment to shine, but this is definitely Eddie’s movie, and Arsenio was a great right-hand man. But I can’t help but love James Earl Jones as a potential favorite (other than Eddie Murphy as the old Jewish man; that’s just a riot.)
The makeup and prosthetics on Old Jewish Guy are to this day one of the best I've seen. I had _no_ idea it was Eddie Murphy when I first watched this. It's still totally convincing.
Eddie Murphy is always one of those great comedic actors who can not only nail the comedic one liners and deliveries, but can really nail the emotional moments of his characters. Definitely one of the greats
Fun fact: In one scene of the movie, Eddie Murphy (as the old man in the barber shop) calls Prince Akeem "Kunta Kinte". Kunta Kinte was the main character in the 1970s TV series Roots, and the character as an adult was played by John Amos, who played Mr McDowell in Coming to America 🤯
That McDowell's employee was performed by Louie Anderson. He was a stand up comedian and an actor. He even had an animated series about his childhood. He passed away last year at 68.
I would recommend The Golden Child with Eddie Murphy too. It's a little bit different than these type of comedies but still pretty funny. Can't wait to see the Beverly Hills Cop reaction!
I always have fun picking out which characters are Eddie and Arsenio, in disguise. The one where Arsenio is the woman trying to pick up Eddie Murphy always has me in rolling laughter. Murphy acting like the old Jewish white guy at the barber shop does too. The chubby guy working at McDowell is Saturday Night Live comedian Louis Anderson.
I've watch this a million times but seeing you watch it for the first time was so refreshing. You laughing made me laugh so much! Eddie Murphy is just an iconic comedian!
She also played a doctor and part of the surgical team in 'Trapper John, M.D.' - a hospital drama series back in the late 70's/early 80's. I remember watching it with my mom as a kid. 😄
Good dialogue, excellent delivery, and excellent pacing. It is a movie I don't mind watching again, every few years. A detail I noticed that I didn't before, Akim and Semi, are constantly shivering and cold, when outside, when others aren't. A nice detail, because where they were from, it, probably, never got close to freezing so they hadn't acclimatized yet. also, when he didn't get off the train after Lisa, was a reference to what he wanted in a wife. Someone with their own opinion, and he chose to respect it, instead of chasing her when she said no.
39:08 In case you're wondering, it's not a real movie. Director John Landis seems to have inserted it as kind of an Easter egg on a number of movies he's worked on. It was on a poster in Ophelia's apartment in "Trading Places", as well as on a advertising billboard in "The Blues Brothers". You should have a look at that movie if you haven't seen it yet.

All the actors are wonderful and this is a favorite rewatch movie. Hope you enjoyed.🎉. So glad you picked up on the cross over with Trading Places. Yes there was a sequel to this recently. Arsenio Hall had one of the biggest night time chat shows ever, look him up. Also the big dance numbers were choreographed by Paula Abdul. Trust me, that’s cool. Also the King and Queen are the voices of Mufasa and Sarabi in the Lion King. 😊

One of the best things about this movie was the barbershop scenes where Eddie and Arsenio played multiple characters and the other guy in the movie Clint Smith had a small part in Trading Places. He was in the jail scene with Eddie.
It's not really a cameo from SLJ. More like Retroactive Recognition. He was only just starting to make a name for himself back when this came out, so it was just a small role at the time. John Amos is incredibly underrated as well, he pops up all over, like the Die Hard sequel, and always brings a solid performance.
Ah gotcha, good to see Samuel L. Jackson had screen presence even back before his household name status, and John Amos was a scene-stealer in this one!
Director John Landis was making "shared universes" long before everyone else did. He had the Duke Brothers appear in Coming To America, indicating that it exists in the same universe as Trading Places, but he also had his segment from The Twilight Zone exist in the same universe as Animal House, when a soldier in the Vietnam segment is heard saying, "I told you guys, we shouldn't have killed Lieutenant Neidermeyer!"
2 things that I wanted to mention in regards to this movie. 1.) The man that played the Bride-To-Be's Father at the beginning of the movie is named Calvin Lockhart; my Mom used to date him way back in the day. He was very popular during the Blaxploitation generation. 2.) James Earl Jones suffered from a stutter when he was young... as did my Mother. She overcame hers similar to him with speech therapy, diction/elocution classes. Her being Classically trained to sing Opera was a huge help as well.
HARLEM NIGHTS & BOOMERANG are two Eddie Murphy comedies (starring several legendary comedians) that I rarely see reactions to. I hope you'll consider them.
I was too young to appreciate this at the time but it came on TV a lot. Seeing the highlights had me laughing a ton especially during the "sexual chocolate" scene....that was...surreal! And the dad is my favourite for that exact same part because of the door slamming. I think it was so funny because he was such a huge fan of Darryl for most of the film. Also, I knew Eddie Murphy played some of the side characters because he did that in "The Nutty Professor" too (one of my favs). Eddie fooled me in that film cause he does such a great job. As for the $500,000 earrings...that's pretty standard, no? haha :) - This reaction was so much fun, thank you Thor!
Speaking of Mufasa(1:52) the woman (Madge Sinclair) who plays his wife and Eddie’s character’s mother in this also voices the original Queen in The Lion King opposite of Jones’ Mufasa.
Another great Eddie Murphy movie comedy I think you will like is "Life". But its more of a comedy/drama. I hardly see anyone reacting to this and ITS SOOOOO GOOD! It also has Martin Lawrence, Bernie Mac (RIP) and a whole list of other great actors. PLEASE consider reacting to this. I would love a reaction from you. But if that's not possible you should see it on your own. Without giving too much away it gets DEEP in some parts so it might make you emotional. Thank you for your reactions. ❤
The line about the Christmas pageant was an inside joke. James Earl Jones played one of the Wise Men in the miniseries Jesus of Nazareth. You may be interested in several movies based on Tom Clancy books, including The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger. James Earl Jones is in those.
If you want another movie that has a similar feel to it when 'everything comes to the surface' I HIGHLY recommend The Secret of My Success (1987) starring Michael J. Fox.

Absolute classic. A movie that when you watch again, you'll find something new to laugh at. Eddie also tied 2 of his other classics together with Harlem Nights which costars Richard Pryor and Red Foxx, and LIFE with Martin Lawrence. Both great movies
This classic came out the year I was born... God, I'm getting old! 😂 Cheers!!! As for classic comedies, you must see Brewster's Millions with Richard Pryor.
Fun Fact: If you go back and look at the barbershop scene when Akeem is in the chair to get his hair cut, he obviously couldn't play the old Jewish man sitting behind him in the background, so they brought in the make-up artists father-in-law to stand in because he was the "model" they used to create the characters look.....

The employee was Louie Anderson, a comedian. This was also the first appearance of Cuba Gooding JR in a movie. He had no speaking lines; he was getting a haircut. The cab driver was Jake Steinfeld. He developed businesses through the "Body by Jake" brand.
I kinda like the premise of this movie cuz usually this story is about a princess facing arranged marriage and wanting her own choice. Here, it’s a role reversal and I think they did it really well
I love that they had the Dukes as a cameo, that was fun. But I wonder what happened to the initial wife, the woman who'd spent her ENTIRE life growing up to be/think/want whatever he wanted, and now she wasn't marrying him.

29:00 I think that was the first time the two different movies shared the same characters and a plot attached to those characters, or maybe "Coming to America" was the first movie in which I've noticed that.
Im so glad you reacted to this cause this is one of Eddie Murphy’s best movies. You really gotta watch the second one which is on Amazon prime, I think you’ll like it. In case you haven’t noticed the late actress Madge Sinclair who plays the queen voices Sarabi in the lion king.
If you want a wild James Earl Jones movie, check him out in Conan the Barbarian as the bad guy Thulsa Doom. 🐍 Just about everybody in Coming To America was a well known face back in the day. The cabbie had his own family sitcom on CBN for a while. The chubby counter guy was a very funny stand-up and even had an animated series. Darryl was a very serious doctor on ER. Arsenio got his own late night talk show. Lisa's dad was the father on a family sitcom. Randolph and Mortimer were big movie stars back in the black and white Hollywood days.
For more pre-MCU crossovers, you need to get started in the View Askewniverse (Kevin Smith's films). There are guides to the watch order online. It wasn't clear but I'm assuming you saw all the roles that both Eddie and Arsenio played including Eddie playing the Jewish white guy. If I remember correctly, Eddie went into a store or restaurant dressed as the Jewish guy to prove it would work.
The big guy at McDowells is played by Louie Anderson. He was a stand up comic from the 80`s&90`s he also had a cartoon on Fox in the 90`s called Life With Louie. In the early 2000's he hosted Family Feud. Sadly he passed away in January 2022
So glad you got to this so soon after seeing Trading Places. Some reactors space out some movies that should be watched closer together, so they miss out on all kinds of things. Appreciate you! Oh and the sequel was pretty good. Of course it cannot live up to the original, but I laughed a lot and really liked the story. If you know who Wesley Snipes is, he is in the sequel as well as a bunch of the main cast. If' you are not familiar with Wesley Snipes check out the Blade trilogy and some other great action flicks of his like Demolition Man (with Sylvester Stalone), Rising Sun (with Sean Connery), Passenger 57,. He was big into the action movies. But he was also in a great comedy movie with Patrick Swaze and John Leguizamo called "To Wong Foo, thanks for everything! Julie Newmar"
You should definitely react to Troop Beverly Hills (1989) which is about a rich mother from bravely Hill who becomes her daughters troop mom. This movie is hilarious and one of my favorite moves.
If you haven't seen James earl Jones in anything else then you must not have seen Field of Dreams. Highly recommend it since it is from this era it would fit in with this nostalgic film series you are doing. Really enjoyed this video, keep going!

Just about everybody in Coming To America was a well known face back in the day.
The sequel is sad when compared to this classic
Thor: and you also have the most beautiful voice in the world.
Morgan freeman: and i took that personally.
Hahaha there should be a Voice-Off!
If you like James Earl Jones watch Conan the Barbarian. He's great in it and it's a fantastic movie.
The big guy at McDowells is played by Louie Anderson. He was a stand up comic from the 80`s&90`s he also had a cartoon on Fox in the 90`s called Life With Louie. In the early 2000's he hosted Family Feud. Sadly he passed away in January 2022
My favorite comedy of all time easy
Loved watching you watch this classic. Subscribed!
MUST watch Harlem Nights.... hilarious Eddie movie
48 Hours is another classic .
Apparently the king does have enough money to buy his daughter
An underrated Eddie Murphy gem I'd love to see you take on is "The Distinguished Gentleman."
Very underrated 90s comedy adventure: "Undercover Blues" - great acting (Stanley Tucci is to die for). Interesting plot, lots of fun. Please consider reacting!
My favorite part is the tie-in to Trading Places with Mortimer and Randolph homeless on the streets
