I watched the Anya Taylor-Joy version of Emma right before the pandemic. You can definitely see storylines and characters in Clueless that are taken from the original source material.
Exactly!! It's probably why Clueless and Legally Blonde are some of my all-time favs. Elle Woods had all the ingredients to be a stereotypical self-involved dumb blonde, but she's genuinely nice and quick on her feet. Like Cher, you're ALWAYS rooting for them. 100% feel-good movies and I'm always down to watch them for the hundredth time, lol.
The quote, “No, she’s a full-on Monet. It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s OK, but up close, it’s a big old mess,” proves that Cher isn't as dense as people would like to believe. She's only interested in learning about things that catch her attention and tends to tune out the things that don't. She can miss the mark regarding people's desires, but I like her willingness to admit her faults and make changes to correct them. Also, I think at her cord she is a good friend.
They did a really good job of portraying her after the character "Emma" in Jane Austen's "Emma". It's rare for a modern version to be so respectful of the classic version that's the story is based upon. Emma was described as being beautiful, wealthy, spoiled, highly intelligent, but intellectually lazy...and devoted to her father.
That lawyer towards the end always strikes me as extremely stupid 😂 Like you think your boss will be more irritated about a minor filing mixup than you yelling at/insulting his daughter? Come on, dude. You're way more likely to get fired for that lol.
Believe it or not, many lawyers says & does the stupidest stuffs under stress, when they are insomniac, after working long hours, living on caffeine & without a single positive thoughts or mindset 😅 Believe it or not...
I love this movie. It was such a refreshing turn that although Cher was a spoiled rich, popular, fashion savvy beautiful girl, she was not a mean girl. The few times that she kind of inconsiderate it was not only not out of malice, but also not even a "I don't care" just clueless. She did care about and take care of people. Her immediate reaction to Tai as an image of disaster was to help her rather than bully or even tease her, or avoid her altogether. Even though setting up the teachers did have the ulterior motive of changing her grade, she was legitimately more excited about how cute they were together than she was about getting the better grade.
@justindenney-hall5875 before time started Paul rudd was loney so he made God. To thank Paul rudd God made the universe so Paul rudd would have something to do
Amber: “Ms. Stoeger, my plastic surgeon doesn't want me doing any activity where balls fly at my nose.” 🎾 Dionne: "Well there goes your social life" 😂 RIP Brittany Murphy.
I think Cher is clueless, but she's smart, resourceful, and I like how she really puts in the work and also takes care of her dad. :) I like her. This movie holds up because the characters are so charismatic.
Well it's a modern adaption of the book rather than the movie, but the movie is pretty accurate to the book so it should still work well for a comparison.
As a Swedish person, I'm very offended that you don't know who Pippi Longstocking is. (just kidding) Pippi Longstocking is a Swedish children's book written by Astrid Lindgren. It's been translated into loads of languages and is, or at least was, hugely popular. The character Pippi is a young girl who is extremely strong. Knocking out baddies and bending iron bars kind of strong. Her hair is always in two braids, which is why Josh thought Cher looked like her. Pippi has been extremely important as a female role model for kids, with her being a ~10 year old girl who is basically a superhero. She also has a horse that lives inside her house, which is pretty damn awesome too.
I used to watch these English dubbed movies of Pippi Longstocking from the 70s when I was a kid, and I loved them enough that it led me to find the books, which I loved too!
I saw this in the theater when i was 16! Love this movie! So funny! The Dad is probably my favorite character! Alicia Silverstone is also great alongside Brendan Fraser in "Blast From the Past", another romantic comedy from the late 90's.❤
Thank you for reminding me who she is. Probably the only other thing I've seen her in is the bad Buffy movie and "Dude, where's my car", but she's only in that for like a minute from 2 cameo's, from what I remember.
I first saw Alicia Silverstone when she was 14 in "The Crush" with Carey Elwes from "The Princess Bride" in it. She was GREAT in her introductory role.
I grew up with this movie and totally was crushing on Josh (Paul Rudd) watching this. The dad is awesome for sure but I really did like Alicia as Cher, she really did have charm and like you said she was genuinely a decent person just a bit spoiled and naive. She wanted to do good at first it was for her benefit but she did enjoying seeing others happy, then she realizes the error in her ways and decides to change. I also like Josh and her back & forth exchanges great chemistry. I remember a lot of people watching this movie and even now new reactors getting freaked out that he is her ex-step-brother even tho they aren't related by blood and they weren't close before this. I didn't really get it then or now, I just thought that made a great couple so I was glad to see that wasn't even an issue here.
Props to you for catching on so early that the film is an adaptation of Austen's Emma! As a huge fan of Austen, I expected to hate and mock the film when it first came out. To this day, it remains one of my favorite adaptations of her work. Great reaction! BTW, you should definitely consider reacting to Some Like it Hot. Not only one of the great comedies of all time, but then you'll get the reference! 😁
The freeway scene is one of my favorites. I watched this for the first time a couple years before getting my license as was always afraid of LA traffic because of it. When I finally drove in LA it was not a big deal. It is funny how I always associate that with this movie, but not the many boneheaded things I do remember doing while learning how to drive in small towns.
I saw this when I was 11 in 1996 and i've seen it a million times since. It's still my "comfort food" movie. I can put it on whenever, l never get sick of it, and it always brings me joy.
This movie came out when I was in college. My friend and I would watch it all the time! His favorite part was "Get out of my chair!" Another fun 90's comedy you should check out if you haven't already is Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion
This movie came out when I was in 4th grade and it was HUGE! Everyone in my class quoted it constantly. It was a big part of the zeitgeist of the 90s. I, personally, became outrageously obsessed with it. Its soundtrack defined a lot of my taste in music, I had the novelization, I watched the TV show. Fun fact, Paul Rudd guest starred on an episode of the TV show as a different character than Josh (as both Josh and Cher had been recast for the show). His character's name was Sonny. Get it? It wasn't until my twenties that I got introduced to Jane Austen and, subsequently, obsessed (as I tend to do). Then I found out that Clueless was an adaptation of Emma. Then I watched it again and loved the movie just as much as an adult. It really holds up! After being asked for the millionth time what my favorite movie is, I had to sit down and do some math. I have a special affinity for rom coms and teen movies. I loooooove a good adaptation. Clueless is an especially personal piece of nostalgia for me. The story is a really positive, optimistic one. The filmmaking is topnotch. It's just a very well-written, well-made movie. So after debating it, I realized Clueless was my favorite movie. Then Everything, Everywhere, All At Once came out. Now it's my second-favorite.
I was 13 when this came out (😮) and this was one of my favourite films. It’s one of those go to movies if I need cheering up or I’m needing something not too deep. It’s fun and colourful and takes me back to the mid-90’s vibe. Ah nostalgia
Pauly Shore movie I *highly* recommend is 1990s (1992 specifically) comedy gold but often overlooked: *ENCINO* MAN! Also stars Brendan Fraser and Sean Astin ("Samwise"). Chockful of '90s slang and many laughs.
I wouldn't say it was iconic to my childhood, since I was 25 when it came out, but it was culturally significant, much like The Princess Bride was, which was part of my childhood. My husband and I loved Clueless. We used to watch it every couple of years up until Brittany Murphy (Tai) died. It was kind of hard to watch after that. Seeing it again was bittersweet, but not as hard as I thought it would be.
One of my favorite movies! Cher was definitely a sweet but clueless popular girl, a refreshing change from the usual "spoiled mean rich girl" trope. She was well-intentioned, just wasn't always aware of what the correct course of action was. Loved this as an adaptation of a Jane Austin work, and I would love to see more of them done in this style! It's such a feel-good movie too 🥰 Lots of fun to rewatch! ~Caroline
Alicia Silverstone played Cher and she's really good in Excess baggage and The Crush which Amber Benson (Tara from Buffy) is also in and they're much darker roles for Alicia as well, both great films that you should definitely check out ❤ XxXxX
Love, love, love Clueless. It’s definitely my favorite in this genre. Growing up in the 90s, you couldn’t get away with not watching this. I was an early teen at that time and Alicia Silverstone was a stone cold fox, still is. I love the writing. Amy Heckerling really took the time to understand teens of that era. She used established slang familiar to kids that parents just didn’t understand, as well as created some of her own for these characters. This movie is both a product of it’s time and timeless all at once. I think the adaptation of Emma lends itself to the universal understanding it has while the clothing and slang capture a special time in American history, the 90s. So glad you finally watched this classic!
travis is one of my favorite characters ever 😃 it was never explicitly stated in the film but the writer said that he is the heir of the Birkenstock shoes family. it makes his hippie skater stoner personality make total sense lol.
Not many people catch that it's Emma. It's a well done retelling of it. And Alicia Silverstone fueled the dreams of a generation of us. This is a major guilty pleasure movie. It's just fun. Everyone in it is good at their roles. It's also fun seeing Paul Rudd go from this to being Ant Man and realizing he hasn't really aged more than 1 year in the last 30. As clueless as Cher can be, she's actually a good person. Especially as she comes to realize some things toward the back half of the film. And the dad is the OG. He knows when to be scary (and can back it up), he knows when to be firm, but he also knows when to praise and be calm. He's a good guy.
Fun fact: Apparently, Cher mispronouncing the word "Haitians" was not in the script. That's just how Alicia Silverstone pronounced it. And they left it in. Because why not?! 🤷♀️
I also grew up with The Princess Bride! Everyone in my family can quote the movie. When my husband and I first started dating we found out that it was both of our all time favorite movies❤️
You don’t know any Paulie Shore movies!? They were a huge part of the 90’s. Start with Encino Man with Brendan Fraser, then Bio-Man, Son-in-law, and In the Army Now.
Yeah, this movie was the Mean Girls of the 90s, and still to this day is in that same top tier of teen movies, it's a classic in my book and holds up exceptionally well despite being so quintessentially 90s
Amy Heckerling visited high schools at the time to accurately portray the dialogue and slang phrases...for example the term "whatever" used as a 'i don't care' vibe was not widely used before this movie came out. I was a teen when it came out and so it has a special nostalgic place in my heart, but the comedy and story hold up
This is such a 90s classic, and came out right at a pivotal moment for me... I was 16... this movie just brings me back to my youth. Even though I wasnt rich or had any experiences like hers... this was a pop culture moment. 💜
Clueless is a perfect modern take on Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’. It’s a shining example of how you can make a modern Austen novel without butchering the original source material the way the modern Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion films were done. It shows what a true fan of the original novel can produce with a little creativity and a lot of heartfelt thought. I love Austen and I love Clueless.
Something I only noticed about this movie recently is that when Josh watches Cher walk down the stairs to Christian, a song from the musical Gigi is playing. The song is one where the hero of the show realizes that the heroine isn't a little girl anymore, but a woman, and that he is very attracted to her. Just as Knightley (Josh) needs Christian (Frank Churchill)'s supposed interest in Emma (Cher) to realize his own feelings.
Great reaction! I first watched this movie on VHS when I was 12 years old and I was obsessed! Still love it 27 years later. I don't know how many times I've watched it over the years but it's been a lot, definitely a comfort movie for me. It also introduced me to Jane Austen books and movies, which I still love. 💖
I saw Clueless in the theater when I was 19. This movie IS the 90s. And the soundtrack Radiohead, Luscious Jackson, Cracker, Supergrass… The freeway scene will always be my favorite. The old woman flips her the bird and Cher yells “SHUUUUUT UUUUP!” 😂😂
RIP Brittany Murphy 😔 the red hair that they do the make over. also the guy on the stairs when they kiss also will appear in the friend show that you’re watching. not just princess bride, he also played in the haunted mansion with eddie murphy. the dad on here also played in the movie Rookie of the Year.
One of the best adaptations of classic lit to hs movie ever Imo, the only part I think didn't translate, in Emma, Mr. Elton asks for a painting she does of Harriet, and I buy that as he wanted to have something she put her heart into. Elton hanging the picture she took of Tai in his locker when he's not interested is insanity. Imo it would have made way more sense if it was a portrait she did for art class or something
The actor that played the dad was in one of my favorite movies ever, "Dick." He played Richard Nixon, and it stars him, Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst. It's a comedy, and very funny. Might want to consider doing a first watch on it, and nobody (at least that I can find) has on RUclips.
First: the novel of "Emma" is often my favorite Jane Austen work: she wrote it after "Pride and Prejudice" with the direct aim of creating a heroine only she would love. The story is chockful of funny and complicated characters; Austen, as she often does, is hard on her heroine, but gifts her with that essential Austen asset: the ability to learn from your mistakes. The community in "Emma" is lively and lifelike: I feel like I could get to know the streets and stores. Fully recommend the original source. The dad was played by then-very-popular character actor Dan Hedaya. I first saw him in both "Hill Street Blues" and in "Cheers". He's wonderfully versatile and always a great supporting actor to anyone he's with - as you can see here in every scene, from the longer and deeper ones with Alicia Silverstone to even the short one with Christian. Here he is in a different mode: ruclips.net/video/o_UbjnxMSYM/видео.html
Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd both also played superheroes in DC and Marvel films. Silverstone played Batgirl in Batman & Robin (1997) and Rudd portrayed Scott Lang in Ant-Man (2015) and related movies.
9:48 spot on. You got it on the nose. This IS Emma. 🎉❤😅 love that you rang in on that so early. And 10 things I hate about you is an adaption of taming of the shrew. You must like adaptions. Lol
Im not ashamed to call this film one of my all time favorites, probably in my top 5. Obviously there's a lot of nostalgia for me having been entering high school when it came out, but it really is a brilliant script. And my god Alicia Silverstone is just drop dead gorgeous.
Wow this is crazy i was just thinking the dad in “clueless”reminded me so much of the dad in “10 things i hate about you” and then right after you said this 39:05 what a whimsical coincidence lol!! they are both very similar in how they stole the spotlight absolutely love both dads. Also i agree I like 10 things more I just couldn’t relate to most of the characters maybe because i was more of a tomboy as girl in school and my first ever goal in life is not to get spoiled as an only child by my over protective parents and never to become a brat lol either way both films definitely have a cult following of their own if I have to pick one favorite thing about clueless is the online closet organiser! I’m thinking to actually categorise my wardrobe and take pics and do the same thing to make it easier to sort out clothing while organising the closet as well as save time in choosing clothing that go together earlier on
I love a guy who recognizes Austen's works...😊 My favorite is Persuasion, and there is a wonderful BBC adaptation with Ciaran Hinds (King Beyond the Wall in GoT) as Captain Wentworth. Also, The Jane Austen Book Club is a fun "summary" of her works with a modern twist.
Didn't notice it before, but Josh is reading Nietzsche when she gets him to go drive with her. Foreshadowing much? (Nietzsche was supposedly boinking his sister and wrote about it in his book, My Sister and I)
This I one of my childhood movies, and it's incredible how it still somehow gets better every time I watch it. 😂 At the time it meant so much to me to have a popular, wealthy black role-model, but I didn't even notice the gay representation until I was older. Such a deceptively sweet and intelligent film.
I love this movie, it got me interested in fashion when I was in like 4th or 5th grade and the main characters seemed so old lol Now they're 20 years younger than me.... Jesus 😅
This WAS a modernization of Emma. Well spotted.
🤦♀️ I've watched this movie countless times and never made a connection to Emma..🙈
@@karolina285Once you see it, you definitely can't unsee it, though.

I love Cher because she’s a popular girl who is portrayed as kind and emphatic. Yes, she is clueless but she’s never heartless.

She can miss the mark regarding people's desires, but I like her willingness to admit her faults and make changes to correct them. Also, I think at her cord she is a good friend.
She also got a 98 in geometry (before the negotiation) which isn't easy. There are a lot of things that point to her being quite clever.
They did a really good job of portraying her after the character "Emma" in Jane Austen's "Emma". But it was released before Gwyneth Paltrow's Emma.
Good catch on your comparisons to Emma. It was specifically intended as Emma in a modern setting (for the time of course).
Honestly never knew that I’m gonna check out the original movie and compare 😇

@@Nicamon jawbreaker never really became a thing like they wanted, we still had The Heathers. Cruel Intentions and Legally Blonde however...
@@CloudslnMyCoffee RUclips is deleting my reply. Don't know why.X-[
Paul Rudd is just dreamy here. Loved this movie at the theater.❤. I was 21.
Yes!! And I think the same is true for her mispronunciation of Spartacus!!
When she said her buns didnt feel like steel was a reference to the video they were watching that was big in the 90s. Buns of Steel and Abs of Steel
Yaaay, this is just what I needed today!!! This movie is such a classic 👌🏼😁 Also, so glad you've continued with this lighting, God hair all day 🥲
Yeah, this movie was the Mean Girls of the 90s, and still to this day is in that same top tier of teen movies, it's a classic in my book and holds up exceptionally well despite being so quintessentially 90s
I don't like a lot of teen movies, but this one I love! So much fun, and very smart writing.
Such a great reaction! 😃 Nostalgic film for us who grew up in the 90’s!
Amy Heckerling visited high schools at the time to accurately portray the dialogue and slang phrases...for example the term "whatever" used as a 'i don't care' vibe was not widely used before this movie came out. I was a teen when it came out and so it has a special nostalgic place in my heart, but the comedy and story hold up
The way you said that you think she might be dumb really had me rolling and the reaction hasn’t even began yet 🤣
14:10 him yelling at Tai will never not make me LOL 🤣🤣🤣
I would strongly suggest Eurotrip. No one ever reacts to it but its hilarious. And has Michelle Trachtenberg in it 😊
That would be a great movie to react to! A lot of it would have to be blurred... "This isn't where I parked my car!"
And the soundtrack Radiohead, Luscious Jackson, Cracker, Supergrass…
The freeway scene will always be my favorite. The old woman flips her the bird and Cher yells “SHUUUUUT UUUUP!” 😂😂
Clueless was my favorite movie as a teen! This was the perfect way to re-watch it! Lol.
Clueless, mean girls, legally blond and 10 things I hate about you. My brain sees these movies as a set. One must see them all.
RIP Brittany Murphy 😔 the red hair that they do the make over. also the guy on the stairs when they kiss also will appear in the friend show that you’re watching. not just princess bride, he also played in the haunted mansion with eddie murphy. the dad on here also played in the movie Rookie of the Year.
this movie is one of my all time favourites, so excited to see your reaction!
I loved being a teenager in the 90's!! The best times 🥰 It was definitely the peak teen rom-com era!
“Was she driving the bus that hit Rachel McAdams (Regina George) in Mean Girls?”
Only if that bus had a Flux Capacitor.
I loved watching this movie growing up. It was my go to movie. As if was my favorite phrase to say, 😂. And i loved all of Cher`s outfits
I find it funny that you said very young Paul Rudd is in this movie because almost 30 years later and he's pretty much ageless at this point.
This was true about 10 years ago but now you can definitely see the age on his face.
I quote this movie all the time, iconic ♥
This is one of my comfort movies❤😭
Cher: 98 in geometry
Thor: show her the rest of the report card
Me: LMAO
The adaptations that I adore; 10 things I hate about you- taming of the shrew, she’s the man- 12th night, clueless- Emma
This is one of my favorite re-watches!
Thor, I don’t thin’ I’ve EVER seen someone peep the Emma adaptation before 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
I believe the song in the beginning was kids in America by Kim Wild.
9:48 spot on. You got it on the nose. This IS Emma. 🎉❤😅 love that you rang in on that so early.
And 10 things I hate about you is an adaption of taming of the shrew. You must like adaptions. Lol
"It's inconceivable--what can I say?" ***bursts out in snorting and guttural laughter****
It is Inconceivable! yesss! Liked for just that line and I enjoy watching you react. :)
I’m thinking to actually categorise my wardrobe and take pics and do the same thing to make it easier to sort out clothing while organising the closet as well as save time in choosing clothing that go together earlier on
Alicia Silverstone is also great in Blast From The Past. 🔥 chemistry with Brendan Fraser ❤️ and Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek too. Fun!
Agreed, that movie is really cute.
5:56 thank you🤣. I absolutely love you for that🥰🥰. As if I didn't already😉
Cher has great lawyer potential lol
we need headcannon that she and elle woods were lawyer friends
Such a cute fun movie. I love watching folks react to it for the first time. As always, wonderful reaction.
I can't believe nobody is talking about Turk from Scrubs aka Murray in this, Dee's boyfriend.
I see them as the same charcter. I just imagine JD lurking in the background somewhere
@@CloudslnMyCoffee 😂🤣😂🤣
Such a great script. Decidedly clever, a little subversive & whole lot of fun!
The fact Murray says "they're planning our weddings" and the guys don't protest is really sweet.
Saw it in theaters at age 16. Classic.
I was born in 1990 so yeah I grew up with this movie I still love it
I'm so glad you did see this. you are very well versed in that English writer that I cant spell.
Disneys “Heavyweights” 90’s 😎 comedy recommendation
That song you liked in the very beginning? Kim Wilde, Kids in America
Didn't notice it before, but Josh is reading Nietzsche when she gets him to go drive with her. Foreshadowing much?
(Nietzsche was supposedly boinking his sister and wrote about it in his book, My Sister and I)
Take note ladies. If you want to get out of class, especially with a male teacher, just tell them you're surfing the crimson wave.
Jesus 😅
Such a classic 90s movie! ❤ As if!!
I bumped into the Sicilian from The Princess Bride outside a bookstore in Iowa City around 1993 or 94. He was an absolute dick!
