  • I wanted to post an update video on the things I am working on. I love spud amps and have an idea in mind for an educational series based off the 6LU8 compactron tube.
    Also we have a BUNCH of pre-amps to review and upgrade! I have a FX-10, a Nobsound E6 and a Leaf Audio PA-03 MKII. We are also going to revisit some past pre-amp shootout winners.
    And lastly, I think I have a plan for the Nobsound 6P1, and no it doesn't involve a dumpster or a sledge hammer!
    Here is my Patreon, as well as the donation page at my site, if you feel so inclined to help fund some of the future projects for the channel! You can also find my contact page at my website

    I would love to see a fresh build of a preamp that is point to point wired. Using 6SN7 or some 12A?7 tubes. But what would really be cool is if it had tone controls.

    I agree Skunkie with the keeping it simple. Just like the A12 use a single 100mu triode to drive the finals. I think it's a slam dunk.

    Skunkie great news on the el84's. They are a lovely sounding tube I think. And I agree why spend $$$ on new trans etc. It doesnt make sence for people with that amp Really looking forward to this build.Russian 6p14p are cheap and good.

    With the prices of decent preamps I would love to see more builds on Tube preamps. 2 inputs 2 outputs. Rectifier like the old but plentiful 5y3 family, with 2 of the 12at7 or au7. Excited to see which project you choose next..Have a great day!!

    Love your channel,, Some day can you do a build of a nice sounding little tube buffer, I'm just getting into the tube thing, I'M currently using a Musical Paradise Mp301 integrated tube amp and love it. I would like to add a tube buffer to my solid state kit's and see what kind of sound I can achieve....THANK YOU MUCH. :)

    Hello, I've been watching your videos for a while now, and I don't really comment very much on YT videos, but I just saw this one and I need to chime in. That Leaf Audio preamplifier, I own that. I bought it just before all the Covid crap hit, and listen to it almost daily. I call it the "mystery amp" because there's virtually no info on it anywhere. None of the YT audio talking heads have ever mentioned it (that I know of). There was one review l found online, and I believe you mentioned him... he hated it. I bought the amp taking a big chance, based on nothing but a gut feeling. Terrible, I know, but you know what? It's been fantastic! I love it! Sounds beautiful paired with my Muzishare X7. I know nothing about amplifiers, tube or otherwise, so sometimes you go a bit over my head, but I've learned a thing or two from you. I can tell you l doubt you'll find the schematics on that preamp. I received it brand new, packed in a box, no manual, no paperwork of any kind, and yes, no warranty. Crazy. However, it's been awesome. I love the tone controlls (sorry audiophiles, not lol), and it really mate's well with that X7, which has also been wonderful. Like I said, I call it the mystery amp, like it was made in some Chinese underground factory or something lol. China hifi or Amazon doesn't even carry it. I bought mine off Alley Express of all places. Super interested in anything you do with this piece. Thanks!

    Thanks for all your videos, learning a lot. Very interested in the pre-amps. I currently have the FX Audio Tube 03, similar to the one you mentioned and I have upgraded the opamp to muse02 and the tubes to Sylvanias and I'm amazed at the difference it made in my system for such a small price. I was wondering whether you have had a chance to look at the Zero Zone PRT 13A BAL as it looks like quitre a good circuit and build and includes balanced output. Looking forward to the next few videos looking at those pre-amps in more detail

    Hi Stephe,
    It’s Bob the owner of the Leaf Audio Preamp
    The manufacturer is saying the circuit is off the Audio research LS22, and adopts a balanced dual mono design
    Hope that helps some
    All Chinese gear is a direct copy or based off someone else’s design have you ever seen an original Chinese audio product?

  • @samb3706
    @samb3706 Год назад

    If those Nobsound output transformers carry the part # 6632 [on a sticker on the bottom of the transformer], they are advertised as being 5K ohm primary, 8 ohm secondary [with a 4 ohm tap]. These transformers are used in a number of Nobsound products. Also, beware of the Nobsound power transformers. The part #7640 transformer[secondary 230V@150 ma, and 6.3V@3A, with a 110V/220V primary], caused a lot of 60Hz hum when mounted to the chassis, if you left it connected, but not mounted to a steel chassis, the hum disappeared. I determined that the transformer was saturating, due to poor transformer design, and the fact that the Nobsound circuit used a full wave bridge feeding a reservoir capacitor of 330uf. I fixed that by going to a Hammond 270DAZ xfmr and replacing the bridge with a full wave center tap rectifier. Nobsound is sending a replacement xfmr [what an ordeal that was], but I have no expectations that the replacement will be any different than the defective one. This was supposed to be the 6N2 & 6P1 SE amp kit, but after all of these changes [and looking at some of the poor quality parts], I changed it to a 12AX7 & EL84 amp with a simple circuit. The 5K output transformers do not sound bad, but they are definitely not Edcor/Hammond quality units. Hope that this helps.

    Hi Steph.. Cool stuff.. Have you tried E80CC’s with the 4S Preamp? It has around the same current draw for the heaters as a 12BH7.. That Nobsound DHT preamp looks promising as a buffer-gainstage for my old DAC that puts out

    Hi, I'm looking forward to more preamp stuff. Im interested in putting a tube preamp before a class D amp. I have no idea what's involved or how these things match up. I see that VTV Amplifier is selling a "Custom Vacuum Tube Input Buffer" for the Purifi 1ET-400A class D amp modules. The input buffer also has removable op-amps. Any info you share on such things is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @SkunkieDesignsElectronics
      @SkunkieDesignsElectronics  Год назад +2

      I would say a zero gain "buffer" type "pre-amp" isn't likely to impact the sound much. If you are using an op-amp to get the gain, that's not gonna sound like tubes either!

    Something you might consider covering is mods to the klipsch R51m speaker. Ive modded mine internally with better crossover, more bracing, wadding and deadening tiles and as good as the little speaker is, the mod make it a zillion times sweeter.

    FX10, I had it!, it sounds bad!, internal switching power supply system, with booster, it creates a background hiss and has a high distortion, the output volume is not well controlled, and obviously to make it feel all in a small container the potentiometer is very bad!
