Holt really caresses the ball on all of his strokes. It appears like all of his strokes are average but his timing on the ball is insanely good and his court IQ is off the charts. He never looks rushed.
I think Frank's backhand was way better than Holt's and he knew it. He played a lot on Holt's bh side to win points. Holt's bh seems to have few gears and is used mostly to stay in the point and set up the fh.
maccajoe 100% true. Started when I was like 17. I always used both hands and sides in baseball and in writing. I even went bowling once and played one game righty and the other lefty. Same result.
14:19 - instructive point. At 14:37, Holt doesn't follow his backhand DTL to net, which opens him up to counter attack. Some might say all court tennis is dead.
Shameful call by Frank at 34:43. He even looked straight at the chair umpire afterwards, as even he knew he was cheating on a critical point. Frank is a far better player with much more weapons. No need to cheat on blatantly in serves like that.
All good, I was just super confused when I saw the scores being played on the wrong sides of the court lol. Appreciate you taking the time to record/edit the footage though. Solid footage of top college level tennis is good to see.
Holt would have won if he had a serve and volley game, Frank was standing 5 feet behind the baseline, Holt could have tried drop shots, volleys but seemed to have skipped that part of the game.
I actually agree with this, mechanically Holt is gifted and very well taught. But physically he isn’t the fastest or the biggest hitter, his tennis IQ and being able to read where the ball is going next is what makes him fast enough to compete and beat players at this level. He is a wall in the back of the court but physically not an amazing or fast player. But, he is top 20 in the nation for a reason and I have huge respect for him.
Nik Chow winning is not about fun. European tennis dominates with spin (including fed). Imo american coaches should change the big serve / flat game mindset. Guy in white is very good but half of his rally shots second bounce stays inside the court. Guy in black wins many points by adding spin instead of blasting winners.
if you think these guys are hitting flat you must not watch a lot of tennis. They are hitting with a lot of spin. if you watch in person it is even more evident. APU is an NAIA school; they are between Div II and III and give scholarships.
tigerbalm consider how fast their pace of game is, they don’t have much time to step in. A lot of pros these days hit open stance forehands by they don’t have enough time to step in. Brandon is top 1000 on the atp tour I think
Silly comment considering Holt has already beaten a fair number of pro players. Besides, the top pros tend to hit with an open stance all the time, just like these kids, they are all generating pace with the hips and shoulders. Incidentally, opposing players are always whining about how soft Holt hits, he's a bit unusual.
Frank is the top D2 player in the country with only one loss in his college career coming against a professional ATP ranked top 1000 player.
A. Thunder my college plays against his and he is an absolute beast. He should be playing D1. But he’s on a graduate program at Azusa and he’s 26.
not 26 @@alecwong521
U realize that holt is 568 on atp rankings right
@@kendallwu9947 u realize that ur comment is 3 years late
Good and honest playing from these guys.
34:53 I didnt know you can challenge a line call. Wow!
I wonder how it works 🤔

10:47 wtf switches to one hand backhand midway for more range. #tsonga
I'll show you more range
Thats easy, I am ambidextrious, I serve right handed and my fore and backhand are lefty and my overhead is both.
have you never seen this?
I think Frank's backhand was way better than Holt's and he knew it. He played a lot on Holt's bh side to win points. Holt's bh seems to have few gears and is used mostly to stay in the point and set up the fh.

18:09 ripper!!
Holt's footwork is so nice.
"Lists Bruce Lee as his biggest sports hero" Reason to root for Holt.
I saw both semifinals but missed the finals. Congratulations! to Oliver Frank of Azusa Pacific University.
14:19 - instructive point. At 14:37, Holt doesn't follow his backhand DTL to net, which opens him up to counter attack. Some might say all court tennis is dead.
U can tell he did not intend to hit an approach shot. Too late by the time he realized it.
Thx for new videos!
After a few games it was like Frank realized he didn't really have to hit out to beat Holt.
Great play by both these young men
holt has improved a lot from this time. either that or he was very tired during this match
What's that "Challenge" system that they use? Is it a machine call like Hawkeye? Or do people check the call?
It's just a camera footage from different angles. It's not Hawkeye but it's similar
Playsight
5:26 damn thats the most perfect serving form ive seen
how the hell did frank not get recruited by usc, Virginia, wake forest, etc.?!? (unless he chose d2)
Hes 26 years old
Didnt pay enough

No harm done since there's shot-spot.
Deuce is al left what ???
FYI you messed up the scoring at 15:45 on that out serve call.
I was in a rush to edit the video. Nice catch on the scoring.

34:48 Frank said, "Can I challenge?" So there is hawk-eye in college tennis match now?
"October 30th, 2017 61st Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championship" - you sure?
Sick right?
Have to beat Olympia tomorrow.
play a serve off the net?
I noticed that too, wtf was that? Right after the 11:00 mark.
d1 men's tennis rules
Let's play
Keeps them from calling a let when they get aced. Prevents cheating

Oh man who is this Oliver guy? Hits a pretty hard ball and he doesn't miss very often either. Talk about an upset...
whats up, he’s the top division 2 player in the country.
This isn't the first time the d2 player/champion beat the d1.
That was not an upset.
Is apu azuza pacific?
Yes
Tomic's forehand lives!
What is APU? Asian-Pacific University?
Is that machine used to challenge calls only on the serve? (I didn't watch the whole match)
No it's like a regular line challenge machine like hawk eye in ATP
@@christopherllamas9810 Thanks
kid in white seemed undetermined to win, either that or he just wasn't the athlete he needed to be to win.
Second option is correct. Also , "the kid" is actually Brandon Holt , son of Tracy Austin.
2023: everyone is a senior
Holt loosing in straight sets? Now that's an upset.
Germany lots of good player.
Coach for usc fired....
Poor kid needed a good coach
Don't c any positive energy from the white shirt, but it a great game nice try
Coach quit during college investigation, wonder why?
Holt is a college player if he ever wants a shot at making the pros he shouldve developed weapons
He's got the exact same game as David ferrer
@usctennisplayer This was about a year and a half ago. He has gotten better since then.
Holt is very well taught but not a great athlete.
Jared Seecharran he’s kinda right
Not discrediting Holt , but being the son of a multiple grand slam winner , he can afford to be "well taught".
I actually agree with this, mechanically Holt is gifted and very well taught. They are very good players but why play so flat?
krakou2 why not
cus its boring to play against players with lots of topspin
Nik Chow winning is not about fun. European tennis dominates with spin (including fed). Imo american coaches should change the big serve / flat game mindset. Guy in white is very good but half of his rally shots second bounce stays inside the court. Guy in black wins many points by adding spin instead of blasting winners.
There’s a reason these boys are in the finals of this huge tournament. Either of their game styles are working just fine
if you think these guys are hitting flat you must not watch a lot of tennis. They are hitting with a lot of spin. if you watch in person it is even more evident. APU is an NAIA school; they are between Div II and III and give scholarships.
really good players that cant even rally
HORRRIBLEEE GAMEEE SUCKS BOTH OF THEM !! 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
And you're better?
P Joubert YEAH !!! SHOW YOU ?
These players lack power cuz they don't step into the shot, and rely on arm swing...very bad coaching. They will never be pros...
