OAP or Backbox? The true sound of JCR race pipes on 718 GT4

  • I think the video speaks for itself. JCR exhaust definitely changes the tone of the exhaust but provides little to no additional volume. OAP is what really improved the volume. I think JCR exhaust and Akrapovic OAP are good matches: one fixed the tone, the other fixes the volume. That being said, the JCR exhaust sound was no where near the impression I got by listening to other online videos posted by JCR. Notice, with exception of wind, all other parameters are the same (same camera, same mic)

    Hey man - know you've sold the car but how bad was the drone while cruising? And is it better with valves closed?

      @blendlinegarage42  Месяц назад

      @@jackson5068 its pretty boomy at 3k, that said, you can cruise either at one gear below or one gear above to keep the rpm either below 3k or above 3k. valves closed help a little but with all aftermarket exhaust you will get some drone

    When you indicated the tone of the JCR was not what you anticipated based off online videos, what was different? I assume the tone was even better than you anticipated? To my ear, the first set-up with OAPs/exhaust mods sounds fantastic. On a related note, I have Dundon headers/OAPs with stock exhaust and what I noticed are the following: (1) bump in power; (2) BIG bump in decibels (volume); (3) improved tone (whine) even with stock exhaust. Your setup with OAPs/JCR exhaust - even in an online video - sounds excellent, while JCR alone is underwhelming. Biggest dislike I face right now is that my current setup is so loud once the valves open that I cannot stand when the valves are closed. Keep the valves permanently open, for whatever, reason, did not produce the result for which I was looking. Do the JCR race pipes address the abrupt transition between valves closed and open in your opinion? Overall, I am heading toward getting new exhaust and nothing on the market comes close to the JCR tone (high-pitched whine that I am after). Problem is that JCR is overseas and I have a hard time sending that kind of money overseas with the world in its current state of affairs. First world problems, I realize, but I could think of worse things to be passionate about.

      nicely put! to clarify my comment JCR exhaust alone was very underwhelming (as you mentioned). they had a bunch of online videos showing gt4s fly by on track sounding amazing with just the backbox/muffler but in real life when I did fly bys in COTA my friends were making fun of how quiet the car was after i dropped 7k on an exhaust. Granted the tone is good at the top of the range but with the factory OPF the volume is not there. The combination now is good and ever since this video I added BMC filters that made the car even sound better (check my other videos to hear the car now). As for your setup, I have heard the dundon header with oap and it is pure chaos if you put a louder muffler. I assume you kept the factory muffler to balance the headers and the oap. If you are looking for better tone/pitch, i think your options are limited to jcr and kline. if your problem is only with the low rpm range sound then you should try disconnecting the valve lines (and then plug them) or go with cargraphic valve controller. My jcr backbox is their non-silenced which means the difference between valves closed and open is minimal (nevertheless there). the non-silenced has resonators but no sound dampening. jcr has since introduced the race pipes that are pretty much x pipe with no resonators or dampening. that maybe the way to go

    Nice video, really shows the sound difference between the exhaust components. How'd the cabin noise sound before and after the OAPs?

    • @blendlinegarage42
      @blendlinegarage42  2 года назад +1

      thank you! candidly I think it has less drone now (maybe placebo effect) and def much more pronounced bangs on upshifts (resembling the AMG exhaust almost - with higher pitch). Also now I can hear many more burbles and crackles which was muted before. Couldn't be happier with the interior sound.

      @@blendlinegarage42 Sounds great! Yeah I am basically ready to order an exhaust for my CGTS 4.0 but I'm trying to decide between JCR or Kline. For JCR was thinking silenced valved race pipe + silenced OAPs (when it's released) or Kline silenced OAPs + valved exhaust. Both sound good, people rave about Kline and it seems to be the go to exhaust for most GT4/Spyder owners but JCR sounds better to my ears... but it's pricey.

      @@BrianShaw23 agree! is it going to be a manual car or PDK? I had fitment issues with JCR on my PDK car, and also if you have watched my other videos, I seemed to have lost 10hp with JCR (but admittedly the dynos one week apart). My guess is there is no power gain/loss with JCR exhaust but it definitely sounds amazing. That being said, as you can hear in this video, the car is pretty quiet with JCR exhaust only (which maybe be fine if you are planning to daily your GTS4.0)

    • @BrianShaw23
      @BrianShaw23 2 года назад

      @@blendlinegarage42 yep pdk and is a daily. Aiming for the silenced valved jcr exhaust + oap sound but just lower volume. Jcr's silenced oaps should do it but yet to be released. They are taking a long time in releasing it.

      @@blendlinegarage42 that's what the valves are for tho. If you don't want it to be as loud close them I think oap with the jcr rear is the best combo for this car exhaust wise. From what I've seen jcr makes basically the same oaps that arkopovic made with the heat shielding.
      The draw backs of this car are the lack of standard options they nickel and dime you on like led head lights premium stereo the fact it should be standard android auto and Apple car play as well as it should be push button start. I think making the gt4rs 500hp and giving it an extra 1k rpm is a smack in the face this car should be at 500hp 8k rpm and the rs be at 550 9k rpm. None the less an almost perfect daily spring summer and fall car

    Sure sounds better with OAP imho, but has the HP loss been addressed with this mod? If not do you plan to tune it?

    • @blendlinegarage42
      @blendlinegarage42  2 года назад +1

      the OAP definitely made the car feel faster. I plan to do another Dyno in near future once ECU adapts to higher flow/reduced back pressure of OAP. I will really try to avoid putting a tune on the car since it may void the power train warranty. The car def feels faster than before OAP.

      @@blendlinegarage42 Avoid the ECU tune by all means, it's an NA car with self engineering adaptation, with a turbo that's another history. Curious to see if you recovered the lost pony's, and even more curious what would be the result with the OEM backbox instead (and akra OAP), don't forget that the open path of the OEM backbox is the shorter one... swapping the intake filters with the BMC could be a good idea too and a valve controller , at least I am not regretting doing that.

      @@spyderraw6965 Thank you for your comment. ECU tuning is always a bit of a confusing topic for me and there seems to be a lot of conflicting information on rennlist about it. I know the Spyder/GT4 ECUs are always evolving and optimizing and that's mostly why I want to drive the car with the new setup for a while before doing a dyno test. I know Akrapovic claims 15hp with just the OAP addition (with OEM backbox) and I have no reason to doubt their number (unlike JCR). What I like about the JCR is the high pitch sound it generates (mostly due it being an x-pipe titanium setup). I don't think I ever go back to Stock backbox now that I have sunk 7k in JCR exhaust. If I had to do it all over again, I'd stick with Akrapovic OAP and keep OEM backbox because that really is the best bang for the buck and you get a HUGE improvement in sound. I also thought about BMC higher flow air filters but then I saw a video on youtube where someone did a dust test with OEM. BMC and K&N filters. BMC was filtering more dust than K&N but still paper based OEM was the best outcome (unsurprisingly). I know for the low miles that I will be driving the car it will have no major impact but it's one of those things that will bother me everytime i drive through a dust cloud which happens pretty often in texas.

      @@blendlinegarage42 Doesn't worth the risk , believe me. Of The Shelf maps might be ok but they doesn't bring much benefits anyways and the customs ones are dangerous and the guy behind it doesn't will not even come close to the engineering put behind by Porsche. My experience are those of losing HP at the Dyno and risking the engine , so my advice is staying away (unless you have a turbo )
