3:19-4:40 Everything is defined by it's interactions... Super interesting way of relating this to subjective experiences
Seems to me there's not a point at which chemicals become consciousness, rather the universe is consciousness. A field in which every point has a unique perspective and a correlating unique 'experience' associated with it. The universe feels itself as an atom being drawn towards other atoms, as a chemical bonding to another chemical, as a cell dividing itself, as a bee sensing UV lights as a human 'experiencing' a thought.
Poetic, but think you are talking about entropy.
you might be interested in sean Carroll's book something deeply hidden, there he gives arguments for the universe fundamentally being a universal wave function, this would fit nicely into your idea which I agree with
My crush on this woman must be the result of the last 13 billion years of causation. I hope she appreciates that
Lex please invite Stuart hameroff in regards to consciousness. Together with Roger Penrose they postulated wild ideas involving quantum mechanics in parts of our brains being responsible for consciousness. Super interesting.
Nice chemistry between these two physicists.
Lex Fridman is one of the very few men of substance that exist today with a purpose of life and know how to go about that purpose. With his invaluable Podcasts, he brought to the fore the thoughts, ideals and mind of such intellectuals from the sciences, technology and Philosophy. Thanks Lex for this priceless service. When I become a Millionaire, I will send a lot of money to you as a support to your historic efforts. - Sundara Yerrapragada, Computer Programmer and Mathematician, India.
LEX YOU NEED TO HAVE BERNARDO KASTRUP ON
Lex really should learn about Bernado's analytic idealism...it really is the most perspective shifting (and life changing) material on consciousness
They have great chemistry. I would be surprised if they don’t end up genuine, good friends.
You should have said "have sex" because then you'd be completely in line with all the comments like this that pop up _after every single show with a female guest_ .
Why it sounds like you two are flirting?
i dont know what it is but whenever i see a woman that is grounded and down to earth i love it!!! so few our there !
Hahaha I love when lex or a guest sneaks in a complex topic like ideas outlasting tweets/writing and they just quickly get to consensus like it isnt even a big deal 😂
I feel that consciousness and individuality is a bi-product of complexity, modified or manipulated by circumstances of the surroundings. Survival being one of these, my idea of lions and prides here. A male lion kills the cubs not of him, knowing the difference between I and other, in an effort for survival. similar pack animals that do not engage in this and simply integrate or extricate themselves as a whole without the constraints of "I", but still aware of placement and role
Language as an assumption of vocal or written necessity and therefore intelligence I think has been our most difficult hurdle as human beings in discovering how animals truly are conscious and thoughtful beings, regardless of their knowledge of "I"
Language and the Self are walks in the park compared to Qualia and Intentionality.
There’s something about being a conscious entity that doesn’t seem amenable to science. Scientific theories are maps with temporal dimensions. Consciousness in this instance is the terrain. Maps are not ontologically equivalent to the terrain they represent. What it’s like to be a conscious entity will never somehow magically be explained by a map of the brain or whatever.
They are learning that on the genome level that it is ever changing in every human thus cannot be mapped, and also on the AI side trying to mimic brain function with logical computation when the human brain does no such thing, or something like that.
Agreed
yep, you're trying to explain how brain works using the brain to think
I wonder if lex is familiar with Kripke's interpretation of Wittgenstein -- the Private Language Argument
What if consciousness is like a wave riding on matter but moving through it with it’s own continuity.
Forget the Physics of the universe, what about the chemistry between these 2?
Spoonman, come together with your hands
Save me, I'm together with your plan
Save me

Save me
Save me, yeah

With your. . .
One conclusion that I reached was that *We are Nature's consciousness*.
By nature, Nature is unconscious, because consciousness is the result of the animating source (God, spirit, soul, etc.) interfacing with the material neural network (brain, spine, nervous system, etc.), in the same way that light is the result of electricity (animating source) interfacing with the bulb's filament (material element). *Consciousness is the light produced by the application of spirit to body*.
And so, *Through our eyes Nature takes her first look at herself*.
Through our consciousness of Nature, Nature becomes conscious of herself. And she likes what she sees. Much like a female in front of a mirror, our compulsion to explore and discover every aspect of the universe - from the smallest particles to the largest celestial bodies - is her desire to see more of herself.
The Sintergic Theory is from Jacobo Grinbergh a Mexican cientist that has big studies of the connection from the chamanism and science. He disappeared in 1994 look for that
Its going to be very hard to make any headroom in understanding consciousness. We are limited by how we perceive and understand - As humans, we have to visualize something to truly understand it. Our equations and the things they explain or predict can be checked in the real world for the most part, we can observe microscopic cells, but we cannot observe consciousness outside of our own, or visualize it. Perhaps we are tethered to something in another dimension and that's what our thoughts are. Just wild speculation but if that was the case how do we learn about something like that? Visualize it? Its end game science maybe 1000 years from now...
I have aphantasia and cannot visualize - I understand many things though, even if there are way more things that I don't understand. I agree with your statement that we are limited, it's not a limit due to visualization though.
@@dernaserich I mean in a general sense - You have eyes and can see a wheel is round, how it works with a car, etc. We are limited greatly by our biology (which we know as we cant see radio waves for example). We could also be limited to 3d space, other dimensions could be out of reach.
This was very interesting, she's really smart and understands the problem on a deep level.
Philosophy of mind is one of my favorite hobby-horses. I wish Lex would have people like David Chalmers, Giulio Tononi, Christof Koch, or Annaka Harris on the podcast.
Well one way to figure out consciousness is to keep looking. We may not now exactly how or if consciousness exists in, or functions in accordance with, the physical. But if we keep looking and learning maybe we find it. We got closer. I mean, we know that the brain does impact consciousness. If the brain is damaged it can severely impact or change consciousness. So there is a clue right there. Understanding how the brain functions is our best clue right now.
Not exactly true. The world is dependent on our consciousness, it is impossible for us to exist outside of our conscious frame.
How do you know consciousness exists in the brain? You study it with your consciousness. This is using X to deduce X. I don’t believe it’s possible for us to understand the origin of consciousness while existing in the first person conscious experience.
@@SoyBooru Well, that sounds like the problem of solipsism. Any moment, we cannot know more than we know. Or less than we know. We know exactly what we know. And all that we know exists, is just that.
Do you know that the same is true for me? No. Maybe you assume it to be the case, and it's real to you. But is that just because you assume this to be the case?
It's a kind of circular explanation that can be true, despite being a circular explanation. Or, it sort of equates the mind or the consciousness to the world. But since we can't know it's true, we best move on and keep it in the back of our mind as a possibility.
@@lystic9392 Fair response. I only take issue with speaking in absolutes about these questions of reality. People start with the assumption that there is a physical explanation for a seemingly non-physical phenomena, but that’s poor scientific reasoning if you start with a conclusion or unjustified assumptions. I’m not saying you are doing this, I think your comment was fine.
I agree that we have to accept the faith-based assumptions of science (uniformity principle) and keep moving forward with it. But a lot of people assume that all truth is scientific, which in itself is not a scientifically verifiable claim.
@@SoyBooru Beautiful comment. Yes I agree.
@@lystic9392 Hey if you’re interested in this type of reasoning, I would recommend this video: ruclips.net/video/gJHj4BtP9Go/видео.html
Yes, Consciousness is fundamental, and "Absolutely" so since the entire universe is Pure Consciousness. Access "Mahamrtunjaya mantra - Sacred Sounds Choir" and listen to it for 5 min per day for at least two weeks. In due time you will tap into and merge with Pure Consciousness, also called "Being-In-Itself" by Aristotle, the Ousia of the Stoics, the One of Plotinus, the Tao, the Substance of Spinoza, the Sat-Chit-ananda of Shankara, etc.

Theorem: Defining awareness is its mechanism. Proof: Let awareness be defined.
Corollary: The ecosystem experiences awareness, not each philosopher. Proof: The ecosystem is defined as its animals.

I luv u Lex 💙🍓🥃
Good to know he is watched over👍
What about cross-world inter-breeding?
I look at it like our brain is the cockpit or control panel for our body. Our soul inhabits our brain and through it interacts with the world but our soul is not the brain itself. We are not the physical body but what drives it.
Yes exactly. I agree with you totally. 👍
Yes it is.
Lex and Sara are soul mates lol
You are a quantum energy called consciousness at a 3D party in physical form having such a good time you can't remember who you are 😂😂
You can always have a catch-up call with DiMiTri.
The Seth Material
An individual is not aware, hence awareness in universal. Proof: An ordinary mirror works by sending electrical currents over its surface to construct an exact but 2D rendering of its environment. If a person stands in front of a mirror and talks about why their individual awareness is a fact, within the mirror electrical currents move their mouth so that the mouth in the mirror talks. So, electrical currents can move in a way that explains at length the mechanism of subjective experiences and awareness in words, without the electrical currents being aware.
the universe is conscius everything is conscious and consciousness is everything love is everything and everything is love
How can we see consciousness?
Consciousness is Eternal,
cant be sensed directly,
only through the nature actions and effects.
Rainbow picture Consciousness, in naked form
it is the basic-circuit of all circuits.
It is.
👍🏻
Causality is an illusion.
Well then is matter an illusion ?
@@PrashantMaurice yes and so are you.
❤
What a woman! I don't care if she's a robot or not
Conscious is choice. Everything other than choice is context.
Lex marry her already
"I think i'm conscious right now, but I might not be" ...what? How can you not be aware you are conscious. A literal impossibility.
If consciousness is simply the unique, perceptual experience of each individual, then yes, what you're saying makes sense, and one's own consciousness should be self-evident. However, being that she's a physicist, I think she is trying to understand consciousness as something alienable from subjectivity. For all she knows-for all any of us know-the observation of the concept of consciousness could ultimately be a misapprehesion stemming from one of the many blindspots humans have in this realm of science.
What's worse is we can't, in any empirical sense, validate our individual understanding of consciousness by comparing it with anyone else's. Absolute certainty aside, we can't even be relatively sure that when someone says they experience consciousness in the same way that you do, they aren't just a reflection of your misapprehended concept of consciousness. It can easily be written off as confirmation bias.
@@revolutionairre Would that make you me, or am I you?
She's just a giggling schoolgirl with Lex
To be fair, who wouldn’t
I sometimes talk about myself in the third person but it's because I view myself (my 'real' self) as the entire universe as viewed from the perspective of SmileyP. You can't be part of the universe without also being the whole thing.
As Sara describes herself lol
The consciousness is basically the software we are running on
Right so trying to find consciousness in our biology is like trying to find the software in the computer by breaking down the hardware. All you'll find is 1s and 0s. So who is controlling the mouse and keyboard?
conscioussness is not something being aware of something
All in the mind of god (the universes)
Flirting at the high end of the spectrum.
Yeah. It’s kinda funny. Kinda sad.
Freudian phonetic analysis suggests congratulations and salutations.
Sara is fun to listen to and insightful. You should marry her Lex!
Lex! You look nervous! I would too. She is gorgeous. I'll be your best man 🤘
I think the brain is a quantum computer and the state of consciousness is a quantum entangled state.
Now out of all the beautiful educated women buddy's had on the show I think he had most chemistry with this one. That or he is just more and more comfortable interviewing smart intimidating women.
I'm just saying every time he has a women on the show everyone comments oh they'd be good together.
Which statement is false or does not follow?
1. Darwin said that traits unused for fitness decay and disappear over generations
2. Therefore, we never inherited the traits of abilities that did not benefit us along the process of natural selection
3. Therefore, we inherited the traits of abilities that did benefit us along the process of natural selection
4. The process of natural selection is not a conscious process
5. Consciousness is not an ability that did benefit us along the process of natural selection
6. Consciousness is not a trait which we inherit
7. Consciousness is not a function of the brain.
quantum mechanics is the unbeknownst physics of consciousness
There is no such thing as free will. Time, being the fourth dimension, states that anything that’s going to happen has already happened, it’s just a matter of us humans being unable to traverse forward through time. Think of it like a book. The pages have all been written and the story determined however your place in the book determines your perspective.
They make medicine for this.
Vamos argentina carajo!!!
JAJAJAJAJAJJJJ
I can prove how someone else is conscious, ask me about it
Does that work if you are looking at "someone else" in a mirror? The mouth in the mirror will ask you about conscious, not the original.
She's on to something but not quite there.
She's got big guns. She must lift, or the future thought it'd be ironic to send a machine that resembles Sara Connor.
Are your thoughts physical manifestations? I would think not. So why would you think that consciousness is somehow physical. Trying to explain things through the physical world can never explain things that transcend physical reality. Why even waste the time trying to find answers to something that you already have answers for. You can put that time towards understanding what the implications of consciousness means in a world that is locked to the physical realm.
Have u taken bubai's advice on this?? Lol
What the actual fuck is the universe. Like seriously think about it….it’s nuts. Like where the fuck did all this come from?? It’s so bizarre to think about.
God is the universe. I am part of the universe. Therefore I am God. If you don't believe me, you should have a higher opinion of yourself.
it's insane that scientists want to prove things that we can't truly perceive
It’s insane that we exist
Sorry but this segment is self indulgent circular clap trap and provides zero insight to the question.
💩 *C*R*A*P* 💩
She's way below Lex's or Roger Penrose's level on this subject. She's like those students in physics departments who don't understand why the double split experiment is breaking all the models of reality we used to have.
Physics to study consciousness? Physics is great to study nature and the physical world, but to study other dimensions, something which is beyond the physical world? I love physics, but I doubt it will explain consciousness. Until we open ourselves to other worlds, other dimensions, we will struggle in our understanding.
Geez I wish I could have a career and make money on asking stupid questions like the ones she does. To me, it just seems like she,s complicating simple aspects of reality.
