Magnacut Anomaly: An Inside Look

- Well, right after our first update from the lab, we received a cool follow up! This view is our first look at the interior cross section of an anomaly inside a sample sent in for evaluation. That thing is HUGE! I hope this video more clearly illustrates why we are so insane about inspecting our parts and our commitment to maintaining the highest quality possible for all of you.

This has to be such a relief. You've been beating this drum for quite a while now and so few people wanted to believe what you were seeing. I know there is still battles ahead, but we as users and enthusiasts are all glad that you held to your standards and didn't shut up when others called you crazy.
The size and amount of these things is pretty alarming. I don't understand why so many were so dismissive for such a long time. A few zealous folks tore me up pretty good, even though I was sharing photos and videos outlining exactly what we were seeing. I am very excited to learn the exact composition of these anomalies. The stress of being in the situation aside, I'm genuinely interested to find out what in the manufacturing of the material or sheets could be causing this.
Hell ya, Guy, hold strong! The truth is definitely on your side. They can't spin their way out of this one.
Obviously you aren't the only one who sees this in these materials. People to afraid to shake that snow globe worrying about what these companies will say or do. Just rather keep losing money by tossing "parts" into the bin. What's even worse is the people who either refuse to watch these videos or are watching them and still talking mad shit.
Yeah, I know we aren't the only ones going through this. Other smaller makers are afraid of being attacked, which, based on my own experience, seems super valid. 😅 The larger companies seem to protect the money machine, over talking about things like this publicly.
This for sure wasn't a direction I wanted to go with this. Since they seemed happier to attack me with attorneys instead of just meaningfully making the situation right under warranty, I'm also happy to take this the whole hundred yards.
I’ve replied before. As a small time maker who has done about a dozen MC knives, 2 of them had inclusions that I was able to remove by further thinning. But I won’t use that steel any longer.
Well said. Your hit the nail on the head. People have been scared off and threatened into tucking their tail and accepting it and the losses. Guy is FIGHTING the GOOD FIGHT for those who have talked trash along the way.💪
@@SurviveknivesRespect! 💯
@@Surviveknives I fully appreciate what you say. They refused to make it right, you bore a lot of stress and were forced to make decisions that greatly impacted your life, they (and many trolls) attacked you for speaking publicly about your experiences, you bore even more stress and impact to your life, and now you have the objective evidence supporting your claims. They chose the low road while you chose the high road. There should be consequences for their actions.
I'm glad you stuck with this. I've been following this for awhile and I would like to see what happens in the end. I do own some magnacut knives and I can't help but wonder how many others have seen this (or perhaps they haven't and you are the lucky one).
We will bring this home for sure! We all deserve answers.
Glad your making progress with this nonsence brother! I hope they make it right for you.
Time will tell! 🫠
Glad to see the lab results giving you all the ammo you’d ever need in case they tried to sue you for libel. 🙂 Now just watch your back - stay safe out there, just in case someone decides to try and play dirty.
Yeah, these lab reports are extremely thorough. We have four separate labs involved in this investigation, each with their own samples.
I would like to think nobody would seek retribution over this, but who knows in this world. It is what it is I suppose. 🤷🏻♂️
@@Surviveknives I hear ya’. As they say, ”violence is the last refuge of the incompetent”… and I’m not really sold on the professionalism of the top floor of NSM based on how they’ve handled this whole affair. Not saying anything bad about the guys on the floor of NSM doing the actual work, mind you, just about the head honchos who run the show and make the big decisions over there.
First thing I thought when I saw the first images was "This is absolutely enough money for someone to "Boeing" Guy. Especially because steels like this aren't just, or even primarily, used in knives. There are aerospace clients putting these steels in aircraft. There could be a class action suit over this, with proof that they tried to falsify reports and destroy evidence. CPM manufacturing quality has much larger ramifications than the knife community. They should have eaten the warranty claim months ago.
That you've been willing to drag your business through the mud in the face of haters and would-be intimidators in the name of the truth is what will keep Survive on the knife map long term.
It has certainly been an anxiety filled ride, but I knew at the end of the day we had the truth on our side. The images and reports coming back are exactly what I was expecting to see, based on my observations here in the shop. I am very interested to see what the actual composition is of these anomalies. They are so prevalent in the material I've been working through.
@@SurviveknivesPlease don’t give up, Guy. Your knives are top tier and only getting better.
@@SurviveknivesOther people have said they have purchased other brands of knives with magnacut steel and seen similar inclusions or voids in the blade.
It will be interesting to see how they may blame you about that inner session problem.
Yeah, that would be an uphill battle for them, considering this is in the middle of the sheet. 😂
Cut it lengthwise, too. To see the full dimension of it. For me, this is enough to stay away from it. Truly fear inducing. No maker should go thru this shit.
Just through the observations here in my shop, you can see how big these damned anomalies really are. HUGE CPM-Magnacut Voids

And shebang, you are now supported by science. As I said, it is remarkably irrational for these companies to just be deny deny deny and try to intimidate and threaten as they’d build a lot more goodwill If they identified the problem, acknowledged it and then fixed it. So either they don’t want to fix it or it’s too expensive to fix. Anyway the hurt wagon is coming up the road for them and all the haters can now reflect warmly on their unfounded and inaccurate speculation and criticisms of your actual experience. It’s like watching a thriller and now the mystery of the “unknown” element…maybe you just found kryptonite!
I knew, based on observations, that the facts would be on our side here. I'm glad that the lab reporting is shaping up exactly how we were expecting. I was surprised and pretty disappointed to see so many people piled on with negativity, with zero information.
That is a lot of where I don't really enjoy engaging in online discussions anymore. People run with speculation as fact, and it is maddening. I always want to stand on good data and objective facts.
Well we’ll we’ll… Looks like your not making these issues up. Now people can see things a little more for what they are. Sadly you’re the only person willing to make noise about this. Everyone else has been scared off. Keep you foot in their neck Guy!👊💪
Pretty shocking findings
Well explained! That’s alarming that such high-end materials can have these defects. Curious to learn what causes them.
This entire situation has been insane. I wish we had never even heard of Magnacut.
A test of Interlaminar shear strength (Usually only attributed to Composite Materials) would be interesting :-))
🤣
Expect a check from CPM with an nda pretty damn quick. 😂
They seem pretty good at denying evidence, so we'll see. I would love some kind of meaningful warranty, but I'm not holding my breath. 😐
Hi Guy. Well done to sticking to your guns and fighting this one through! Now they have to admit it was a bad batch, but I bet they will find another excuse not to reimburse you. Really glad this is slowly taking a turn for the better. :-)
Thanks again for the updates!
What is more alarming to me is that sheets we have are from several different heat numbers coming from the mill. We have three different mill test reports from sheets that we got from Niagara directly, and that does not include materials we sourced from SB specialty metals along the way.
Time will tell on a warranty over this, I'm not holding my breath. Seeing as they wanted me to sign a nondisclosure agreement at the beginning of this, I don't know what hope I have now. I wish they would just make it right.
what your plan on moving forward with magncut and where will the new magnacut come from not on either side just curious
Batoning people would have broken that ……..
This is why we are so crazy about inspecting our parts. These anomalies can be pretty big. Here they are as we were finding them in surface grinding: ruclips.net/video/8nM-OTat2uM/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Any update on my order 17995? At which stage of production? When can I expect a ship date?
Hey, that GSO-5.1 should be in this or the next finishing batch. It won't be long.
Man it sucks that when magnacut is made corectly its very good, but that's not what's going on anymore. Do you guys even still give your same warranty with this material?
Yes, any blades that leave our shop still carry our lifetime warranty. We are very rigorous with part inspection during manufacturing, so you guys and girls don't receive things like this.
I don't plan on buying any magnacut, even before you exposed the voids. The hype is over played
As a user, I prefer more simple steels, like ballbearing or the new tool steel you offer. I care way more, about the bevels and their geometry, as also a succesfull heat ttreatment, and handle design. Anything else, is for collectors. The tougher job I put my outdoor knife for, is collecting wild edible plants and mushrooms, as also herbs I collect, to make special oils that work wonders! When the knife hits the soil, to cut a wild edible plant, that's where a simple tough steel, excels.to avoid chips or rolls. Even though I wasn't lucky yet, to own one of your great knives, I'm almost sure, it would be instantly my go to! Especially a GSO 4 or 4.5, would be perfect for a belt knife for me. I wouldn''t mind to own a 4.7 either, but that would go into my emergency bag, where any of the other 2,would see a ton of use immedeately! Keep up the good work guys!!
Thank you for that excellent feedback! I appreciate hearing people's thoughts on different materials and applications, so thanks for sharing a few minutes of your day with us. We will keep up the good work, and the quality standards top tier!
🤞🏻
Amazing how quick SK is at replying to positive and supporting comments on RUclips, but answering customers enquiries when not delivering is a totally different story. Fantastic company 👍🎉
I apologize, I figured it was worth the time to make a two minute video regarding an issue that has been affecting our business and a lot of customers. Did you have a specific question?
Hey man I disagree, Guy has always answered my questions on here about things good or bad.
If you would stop pestering them with stupid questions they could get some work done.
