We have everything here, wrapping up. Just shoot me an order number. I hope you can see how these issues have been affecting our schedule though, right?
Our blade counts keep changing, which means we need to keep ordering new materials to get orders fulfilled. That affects our schedule quite a bit and makes the shop unpredictable.
Material strain in the materials is causing excessive warpage in parts, something many other folks are observing, which means a lot of unnecessary time is being spent flatten these Magnacut parts.
It's that or send out blades that look like leaf springs, just for the sake of quicker progress. I'm not into that.

For what it's worth and thanks to you piquing my interest, I'm rereading Knife Engineering by Dr Larrin Thomas, copyright 2020. In chapter 2 titled "The Structure of Steel" , page 21, there is a paragraph on inclusions and one sentence stands out to me that states: "Special steelmaking practices can help reduce oxygen and sulfur content to minimize these inclusions but are never eliminated." Unless Dr Thomas figured out a way to eliminate inclusions when he developed Magnacut in 2021, this is a red flag in their mission to besmirch Survive's methods and practices.

How many open unfilled orders do you have, and how far back do they go? Asking for a friend. There might be a problem with CPM, I would bet this guy has his own set of problems. Searching the internet can help you learn things. I know a shit pot bunch of knife makers who are not reporting this, nor do they have trouble fulfilling orders from years back either.

I did not set out to become a manufacturing company, I did everything to avoid trying to become a manufacturing company. I don't really want to be running a manufacturing company now, it just needed done.
My oldest backlog was inherited from Millit Knives, projects we paid to have made, but they weren't able to follow through.
We had to work up to these larger knives, to learn how to make them appropriately as our own new manufacturing company. We are there now and getting those done.
These things would've already been done, we would've already been caught up, if our entire production had not been wiped out by decarburizing, in one nice big batch.
It's really hard for a small business to absorb the loss of 800+ almost complete parts. We had months of work in those. That isn't something you just walk off.
We had nothing to do with what happened, we didn't even ask for the service that caused it. That being said, we are working through it, we are getting orders delivered, we are pressing forward.

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +1

They are totally being posted, I just want to look up order numbers so that I respond thoughtfully.
Also, these things are run in batches, it takes a lot of time to answer 100 individual comments about the same knife model that is at the same place in production.
We are a small team of five people, I'm trying to focus on getting work done, while doing what I can to provide comprehensive video updates about everything.
Also, with some of these quality concerns, things we don't know about until blades are almost finished, unanticipated loss or factory seconds affect our scheduling and final blade counts. It can make things unpredictable on our end.
It's hard to run an efficient, well oiled business, when the materials sometimes feel like they are sabotaging your progress.

You can also threaten to pursue criminal charges against that supplier because those samples are your property and if they keep your samples, then it is Theft. If the value of those samples is $900 as they said, then it would be Theft II, where I am from. If the value is $1000 or more, then it would be Theft I, which is a felony where I am from. Perhaps that threat of criminal charges will get them worried enough to return your property.
If the company is in another state, you may have to get the FBI involved; and threaten them with that.

Magnacut is a novel grade, with some different chemistry than I believe they are used to working with. New things always bring challenges, and I don't personally believe that this Crucible is quite the same as the Crucible of old.

Dude, I'm a Lawyer (not in your jurisdiction, so the usual caveat applies to get your own legal advice). If your suppliers have provided subpar or defective materials, you almost definitely have a legal claim for Breach of Contract. Get some tests done (Expert evidence) to back up your claim, and then negotiate with the supplier for a settlement. If you're not happy with the settlement, pursue them in Court.

Like rolling and annealing all the steels the same, then publishing data on annealing that contradicts what they're actually doing at the mill. Retained material stress from rolling at the mill that isn't addressed prior to hardening causes all kinds of fun warping.

Guy, I hope you understand these labs are not going to analyze and test your knives pro bono; you've indicated resources are limited for you. Full disclaimer: I am not an expert in this field. I am just rendering my opinion.
I don't think the issue is with CPM. I think NSM has a defect in their process that is causing the inclusion problem. In the rush to push Magnacut out, they might have cut some corners (NPI) or are processing this steel like they do other steels and are not realizing Magnacut needs a different approach.
Other than Chris Reeve, I haven't seen other major manufacturers be as aggressive in rolling out Magnacut. I have an order for two Spyderco knives in Magnacut that are over a year old. If Spyderco is taking their time rolling this out, it tells me they may have found some things and are working with Crucible to get this fixed.
    Something is rotten in Denmark.

Hey there! A few folks have actually reached out, offering to do testing for us. Former Crucible employees are even reaching out and sharing their thoughts.
Not everyone wants to go public and they wouldn't want to go to court over it to testify, but they are willing to help.
We can work through these issues and press on. It won't be easy but we're committed to this and doing a great job.
I'm not looking for compensation anymore. This is just about finding the truth now.
I'm totally willing to jump in front of this for everyone, simply to get to the bottom of this. Information is the enemy of ignorance.

Hey there! We are working on the GSO-5.1s right now. These material issues keep affecting our blade counts and schedule but we'll keep getting materials until we get any current CPM orders closed out.
If there continue to be setbacks and quality concerns, you guys will see explicit video and photographic evidence of exactly what's happening.
Thank you so much for your patience and support as we get this situation resolved. 👊

I'm more like the shift manager that understands there is cyanide in the cheeseburger you're about to eat.
This is a large issue and these materials are insanely expensive. There is an implied quality promise by using the CPM products. These are supposed to be the best of the best. This is the backbone of our company and our production.
I don't see how some folks aren't able to connect these dots? This affects our ability to serve you.

I believe you hit the nail on the head: they high-cost CPM steels that are marketed to be the best for high-performance applications. The kinds of industries that spend that kind of money tend to have very high standards (like you) codified in Federal Aviation Regulations, MIL-STDs, and similar. They do not play around. A LOT of money is spent ensuring critical applications meet these standards. As NTSB investigators are fond of saying, 'the standards we live by today were written in blood.' Voids in metal housings, hydraulic pumps, valves, engine parts and more have led to stress fractures which have led to failures that led to tragic loss of life. Suppliers who knowingly supply defective parts that lead to death do not typically fare well.
The good fight you fight may be a more noble fight that we originally thought!

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +2

Exactly, you get it. I have worked in different industries over the years and I'm surprised how few people understand the implications of what I'm showing.
They think "knives" and place very little value on the issue. It is a razor sharp implement you're holding in your hand and subjecting to a lot of different stresses. Explosive failure of a hand tool like that could be catastrophic for a user.
When I look at things like that, I think about what other industries these materials are used in, how widespread this issue could be. It's concerning.
We see so many terrible things happen in the world, simply because something small was overlooked or folks turned a blind eye for money. It's not right.

When 3V came out that was a hella impressive steel, then when Magnacut came out and they were claiming it was so much better, my BS detector started going off, and I thought it's all just hype to market the next best thing and upsell people a product that is in reality only, maybe, marginally better, all in the name of profit.
I still stand by statement that good old 440c, properly heat treated will be more than enough of a stainless steel performer for the large majority of knife users. But it's not the latest whiz bang thing, and companies can't charge $300 for it anymore.
    Am I really that wrong?

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  7 месяцев назад +1

I've always told people I would take a mediocre steel with an excellent heat treat, over a super steel with a bad heat treat.
I think the same thing can be applied to some mythical chemistry, that may or may not actually pan out for manufacturability.

We are continuing to fulfill open orders for CPM products, as they were placed. If we continue to fall short due to these concerns, we will order more materials to fulfill those orders. There will be lots of photos and videos along the way.

Just dont shoot yourself in the foot with unfactual slander. What you are doing now is fine, but you're walking a fine line. However, this is why free press holds others accountable. If there are faults found in their steel in aerospace or defense it will shut them down until the issue is resolved. This is not ideal for any company. Keep it up but CYA. (Cover Your Ass!)

I honestly just want them to make the situation right. I'm willing to work, I just need the ability to do so and not have materials that sabotage our work and standards.
I hate the game of wait-and-see, where we have all of the work in these parts, just to find out they have holes in them.
If they can't guarantee that's not going to continue to happen, just get the materials off my floor. They won't even acknowledge the issue, in the face of physical, video, and photographic evidence. It's insane.
Now I need to go get independent testing, just to figure out what the heck is actually going on. If I need to deal with all of these blades, I want to know what's happening inside the parts.
If I'm going that far, I might as well take all of you guys along for the ride. We're all going to learn something.
