  • Jim Tatti, Frank Corrado and Al’s Brother discuss the Edmonton Oilers not matching the St. Louis Blues offer sheets on Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway and Patrik Laine’s impact in Montreal, Chad Kelly starting against the Roughriders and more. They are also joined by TSN Edmonton Oilers reporter Ryan Rishaug to discuss the concern with the new look Oilers defence, why they decided not to match the Broberg and Holloway offer sheets, is there any future moves coming, Broberg’s ceiling as an NHLer, what Leon Draisaitl’s extension could look like in Edmonton and when should it get done and more.

Broberg played 10 freakin' games and everyone is treating him like he's Chris Pronger. If Ceci and Desharnais were any good, no one outside Oil Country would even know who Broberg is. $7M for those 2 tweener players on a team where veterans are taking pay cuts for a chance to win the Cup simply does not work.

I agree that it was way too much for Broberg, but they didnt really get any replacements for the 3 d Men they lost which is the bigger issue. As of now they are going into the season with Brown and Stetcher as their bottom pairing; which could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Seriously stop with the paycut thing... Oilers offer for broberg was 25% of what STL offered... do you see any veterans taking a 75% pay cut? Is mcdavids next contract expected to be 4 mil only when he should be like 16 mil?

Isn't it the point having everyone peeking at the same time to win a cup. Then retool and rebuild so you can do it all over again. At this point, you want to do everything you can to make sure you win the cup. Paying 7mil cap to a couple of rookies hinders that. You can do a lot more impactful things with that money at trade deadline day, especially if there are a couple of good players will to take discounts for a chance at a cup. Win the cup first at all costs, worry about the future later. They did the right thing by not matching.

You have a TSN headline of “massive blow to Oilers organization” and a Sportsnet headline of “ Why declining to match offer sheets was the right decision”. Once again the eastern media is out to lunch. Like hell the Oilers brass are letting 2 largely unproven players to handcuff them while the leaders take less to win. Go ahead. Chase the bag in St. Louis. Both players will regret this and probably all ready do. I guarantee they thought they would be matched. To set a precedent and come out of it arguably in a better spot. @wainber1 22 дня назад

The Oilers acquired a couple of draft picks from the Blues having successfully presented offer sheets to Dylan Holloway and Phil Broberg. That said, who knows if those picks will turn into bona-fide NHL players?
You claim the Oilers hurt themselves with the Nurse contract. As much as re- signing Broberg would’ve cost a huge amount and probably wouldn’t have been quite wise, it sure wasn’t wise for the Oilers to sign Nurse to a contract with a US$9.25-million per-season cap hit either. @@AlbanianMan Some Sportsnet shows during the NBA-NHL off-season don't discuss hockey quite as much. I was able to find a couple of clips from a couple of different shows on Vancouver's Sportsnet 650's Twitter page, and that was just from within the past 12 hours, with plenty of discussion on the physical health of Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko. I wish the Fan 590 would have a bit more offseason coverage of developments around the NHL particularly surrounding Canadian teams.

I like to watch those clips from radio shows that are made available via video if they happen to be about any Canadian NHL team. Last postseason I watched the Jets, then Leafs, bow out in the opening round, leaving the Canucks and Oilers as the only Canadian teams to win a playoff series. Considering how few playoff series the Leafs post-2004 have won (one), I like it when other non-Habs Canadian teams have playoff success (with the Habs having won more post-1967 Stanley Cups than any remaining Canadian team).

Lots can happen before a trade deadline, but.. Ya D is a real concern. So is the Goaltending. Oilers would have won a cup this year with a solid starter. Losing Foegele and Holloway is a real loss indeed. Broberg at the 4.5 SL will now pay him had to be let go, but that to is a loss. This is starting to look like what happened to Chicago after they won their last cup.

  • @alanstorm6915

In my opinion Edmonton had a winning recipe and now they've just destroyed their whole defensive core. Unfortunately, there is the problem with NHL players. They will always go for more money instead of sticking with a really good team to win a cup.
