    Thank you so much for an excellent video of Jersey. I was born in St Helier in 1940, and left in 1963 to live in New Zealand and later in South Africa. But I have returned to Jersey on several occasions, my heart lies there. Thank you again Simon for showing the real Jersey🤗🇯🇪

    Thank you for that ! I'm from Quebec Canada and my Vibert ancestors comes from Jersey. My mother, my sister and I had the chance to visit the island for 2 too short days. My mom was very very moved by the visit. A little anectode .. my mother dreamt of the Mont Orgueil castle many times during her youth without knowing that it was a real castle and that it was situated on the land of our ancestors! It's amazing !

    • @simonguettier
      @simonguettier  4 года назад +1

      Oh what lovely comments Diane, thank you! Yes, Vibert is a very Jersey name, at school one of my best friends was Alfie Vibert, so he's probably related to you somehow ... I'm sure you know this but New Jersey in the States is named after Jersey. And how amazing about your mother's dreams too! My Mum and sister who still live in Jersey (I no longer do) love the castle, and every Xmas they go for Xmas lunch at a restaurant right underneath it. Finally to prove it's a small world, through my Dad's side of the family (French, hence my surname), I have cousins in Toronto - never met them and would love to go to Canada one day. Stay safe and best wishes. Simon

Hope you are able to go back one day. I had a look at your videos, I love sea fishing! Of course, I go every time I visit Jersey, gets harder to catch good fish from the shore, but still possible. Very interesting video, loved the details you included on history which other videos don't. I always wondered if Channel Islander's have any anger or bitterness that Churchill never tried to retake them, and all the suffering that forced upon them? Seems odd that he did not try, but maybe he thought it would only cause more suffering....

    • @simonguettier
      @simonguettier  4 года назад

      Thanks so much for your kind comments. Some answers. In WW2 Jersey had very little strategic importance really. But, for Hitler, it was a HUGE propaganda coup - i.e. he'd technically captured a part of Great Britain. Consequently, he fortified it with a crazy amount of defences. Hard to believe, but per square mile it was the most heavily defended of any territories the Nazis captured. And Churchill knew this - any attempt at recapture would have been very costly in lives. As regarding bitterness - I think while food and other supplies were readily available (up until D Day) islanders reluctantly accepted their lot. However, after D Day there was genuine starvation as no supplies could get through and I've no doubt their thoughts were completely different then.

    • @simonguettier
      @simonguettier  3 года назад

      Hi Bill. No, my accent is definitely not typical of a Jersey accent. A true Jersey accent is hard to describe, but many people think it's similar to the South African accent, strangely enough.

    • @BelloBudo007
      @BelloBudo007 3 года назад

      @@simonguettier Oh I see. I've just got off Skype from Bournemouth mate, asking him the same question. Clearly he had no idea. I wonder why South African? Is there a Dutch influence going on with Jersey Island? Loved your video by the way. Really good look about the place, taking in shops & nature.

    • @NorseNorman
      @NorseNorman 3 года назад +1

      @@BelloBudo007 No Dutch influence that I know of, but I believe that the traditional Jersey accent comes from our local Norman language of Jerriais. As Jerriais has very deep vowels and rolled 'R's, that make the accent (when spoken in English) appear like South African. If you hear some older North Frenchmen talk, you may hear this.

      He does indeed - and he's 91 years old now. The only other notables these days really are Derek Warwick the former racing driver and the 70s singer Gilbert O'Sullivan. As a child, I remember the local rumour that Bond actor Roger Moore had bought a house there - though I don't think he ever lived there permanently. The rumour was doubtless fuelled by the name of the property - it was called 'Moonraker'.
