This is a good starting place for Strawbs. Many people make the mistake of going to their accidental hit Part Of The Union, which is not at all typical of their style. Other charting songs that give better impression of who they were would be Lay Down - a melodic rocker - and Shine On Silver Sun - a shorter track in this kind of progressive folk-rock style. At their best, like this, their music can be powerful, magical and very beautiful.
P.S. Wakeman is on their earlier albums, From The Witchwood and Antiques And Curios, which has a storming live take of Wakeman on Hammond organ on the track Where Is This Dream Of Your Youth?

Great album, a must for prog rockers. Rick Wakeman had a stint with Strawbs. The song Lemon Pie is gem

Their style progressed over the years depending on who was in the band. Rick Wakeman recorded 2 albums with them just before joining Yes. Dave Cousins is the first vocalist and Dave Lambert the second. Dave Cousins just performed his last live this summer due to a terminal abdominal issue

Iam very sorry to hear that Dave cousins is terminally ill. I have seen the Strawbs many times. They put out a lot of good albums and some disappointing ones too. But I've always had great admiration for Dave Cousins his talent will live on.

Very obscure band, at least in the USA. I heard some of their songs on FM radio back in the 70s and I liked what I heard.
“Lay Down” is just a great rocker. Give that one a listen.

An old fave. Saw them live in '76 in a Toronto stadium (MLG). Then approx.1996-8??? at a theater size club (The Diamond). That was a small relaunch tour with this same lineup. Both times were so good we were "mesmerized immaculate".😎 👍👍👍

Saw them too at the Montreal Forum in 1975. I still remember how they brought the house down with the opening notes of "Autumn". Great memories! 🙂

If you know Autumn in England...this sums it up. They used to burn the stubble in the wheat fields...hence 'the fires burning in the fields' and small birds flock to fly back to Africa. John Hawken once played me the introduction in his house in NJ on the original instrument.

This is one of my personal favourite bands, underrated IMHO.

Soft prog at its best, with Dave Cousins unique vocals being part of the charm for me. "Autumn" is a good choice for a first Strawbs song. Thanks for the fine reaction, John! 🙂

Give the entire album a listen, I think you’ll enjoy it. The period from “From The Witchwood” through to “Ghosts” is my favourite. The later albums have some good works as well but are more hit and miss for me. One of my favourite cuts is a performance of “Where is This Dream of Your Youth” by Rick Wakeman from the live album “Just a Collection of Antiques and Curios”. It demonstrates the virtuosity that he would later refine after joining Yes.

Weird, for years and years nothing about Strawbs and now they’re all suddenly reacting to autumn.
