    God bless George Harrison.
This is by far the best interview I've ever heard with any of the Beatles and I've heard hours and hours of them. George was such a beautiful, genuine soul whose extraordinary experiences guided him towards the deep wisdom which he is already displaying here. He was still only thirty-two years old when he had this conversation but he was wise beyond his years.

Garrett Richard , I always felt the same way , too .
But then when I read Pattie Boyd's biography ( and what some others have said ; but I can't remember who they are ) George was not really a saint ; he ran around , had a number of affairs while he was married to Pattie Boyd and I could have sworn even Ringo Starr says that George had an affair with Ringo's wife , Maureen .
After a while when they lived at his massive house , Friar Park , he would often treat his wife as if he did not really want her there .
Kind of a shame but I guess when someone's a superstar it's hard for them to always be loyal when there's always so many women that willing to be intimate with them .
      I just felt a little disappointed , that's all .
And then as much as I always liked Paul McCartney , I figure he's probably not as great as I think either ... and found out that anytime someone works for him , whether it's a studio musician or any other work capacity , he always always makes them sign a non-disclosure agreement .
Kind of a shame to put people through that

    • @gardensofthegods
      @gardensofthegods 2 года назад +1

Gary Twitchett ... and another one I didn't think would cause people to feel subjected , I hear is Bob Dylan .
A couple people were saying that when they were studio musicians that he would refuse to have anything to do with them treated them like they weren't there wouldn't talk to them when they were making an album with him at the recording studio .
They weren't allowed to get friendly with him or anything along those lines .
I'll bet you this kind of stuff happens more often than we think with celebrities

@@gardensofthegods I have Pattie's book, got it recently but havent had the time to read it. None of us know the Beatles personally. Once you get it into your head that they are just people like the rest of us, you will understand they are capable of having a negative side. I've always believed there is a different side to McCartney. It doesn't surprise me what you say about Dylan. These people are hero worshipped, but if we knew them on a personal level much of that idolatry may disappear.

George Harrison's voice and accent is so very soothing and rhythmic. I could listen to him for hours. He also sang some absolutely brilliant songs written by himself during his tenure with The Beatles, as well in his solo career thereafter.
Who can also forget his social conscience to rock at his charitable, philanthropic and humanitarian Concert for Bangladesh ??? No doubt this energised and invigorated future events in the next decade with Bob Geldof's inspired Band Aid.
In the aftermath of The Beatles, with Paul being commercially successful but critically mauled, and John being self-consciously difficult, George initially hit an ingratiating middle ground, and sprinted ahead of his former colleagues. His triple album "All Things Must Pass" is a truly great, ambitious rock’n’roll production, clearing the decks of his numerous songs that never made it onto Beatles albums. As such it must be considered more than merely a great record - it’s also an inscription and observation of an underdog finally triumphing against the odds.
George is a man who seemed to have just about the right symmetry of enthusiasm and proportion, someone who recognised his own flaws, and appeared to have emerged from the wreckage of the Biggest Band Of All Time, happier and more balanced than anyone else who was involved with it. George is the "Coolest Beatle" for many of the Band's fans, and most certainly one of my favourites.
    Rest In Peace, George.

Always love(d) this gentle sweet man. George was always my favourite Beatle - maybe because I felt he was the quiet one who always seemed to leave the space open for the more "out-front" Beatles - John & Paul - to carry on together the way they did. Yet George was quietly being brilliant and ever-so-humble while he waded through the craziness of the Beatles chapter; and he came out the other side a beautiful & grounded and loving spirit. I am sure that it was he who inspired me to playing guitar, and I ended up making a wonderful career of it and still going strong at it 57 years later in 2022. Thank you George for sharing yourself with us all. You are always with us. RIP.

Modesty is such a mystery to many of us. Many of us are so ego strong. George was so modest and even trying to explain why the Beatles were so popular, he shifts the credit away from himself. It's one thing to have an extraordinary gift , it's quite another to deflect most of the credit to some other force. This is part of the Beatles magic, their honesty and their modesty in their craft. Not your typical icons, the Beatles are without comparison.60 years on and we are still an audience of their magic. George ran away from extreme fame, we will never understand extreme fame. I'm glad to have helped make his life successful by buying his music. Admiration for the Beatles is a great club to be a member of. Thanks George for everything you've taught me.

He brings such a sense of calm. Is there ever a time when anyone saw him get overly excited? When his interviewer would ask him something you’d get lost in his answer for a moment then he brings the question back full circle and completes the initial question in a beautiful way. He was truly an amazing artist that will never be forgotten. His son is absolutely a reincarnation of part of him. I would love to hear what George may have said about his son as far as his being reincarnated in this present time. His personality, along with his mates, and being born in Liverpool was explained in a way that I understood. They lived in a cold loneliness, left over from war, and it left them with much to feel, try to understand, and write about. It’s like a history lesson. History can be sad but it also changes the future. No wonder they wanted to vacate and see what other areas of their karma they could escape to and write about in a way the world could relate to. Paul and George are still carrying their name in a beautiful way but I certainly know that John left the world in a way that was traumatic for all that cared, but his history has changed the world in a sense of bringing their messages to the people that lived in that era. They will always be loved for what they have left in world history. Some bad but some ultimately changed the way we feel and how we love. Life goes on…but we love what you left us George. I hope you’re now in a life that brings you joy and the ability to go out and be a part of it in a desirable way.

George calmly works thru his beliefs and reasons why & why not he feels the way he feels. It's quite soothing even if only to listen to him speak. His voice never seems to rise above a clear drone, focused as he weaves away & back to the point. He's never ego-less yet he controls his views like a scientist. Interestingly when he attempts to explain the why-were-the-beatles this or that questions - he never seems to land on the primary thing that celebrities have immense charm and charisma. That's WHY they're celebrities. I mean even still in '75 when he flashes that smile he's a Beatle. He really seems like he would be a good guy to talk things through with. Maybe in another life George would be a good counselor for an advocacy or addiction center. Maybe a guru. Maybe a mayor.

I wish George were alive today just for me to have this same convo with him. What I feel like he -- and Dave Herman - both miss is the social backdrop simultaneously happening when the Beatles came to America. If you read basic history you will find that that time period - the early 1960s -- was the first time that a true middle class was established in the US -- the Auto industry and other solid industries after WWII -- For the first time middle class families had kids - teenagers - with disposable income and freedom to go to these concerts -- for the first time. The pressure after the McCarthy hearings (there's a red in every bed) combined with the gurgling of social unrest -- witness Lenny Bruce -- there was a volatile energy here. It is complicated but the true phenomena of the Beatles was part and parcel with the historic moment of the times -- Especially with the civil rights movement of the early 60s -- women's movement as well -- Why? The lyrics are why. Have you listened to what the lyrics actually say? They are idealistic and in many ways so pure ("I want to hold your hand") at a time when things were polluted -- The TV was full of news reels with police fire-hosing Black people on the streets. The Beatles were so loving in so many ways -- Maybe they would not admit that -- Maybe George did not see that -- but the social need was so strong and they filled it so sweetly. A perfect fit. Wish George was here so I could ramble on, I would hope it might make sense to him if I could. Well, if George could somehow magically appear -- and I could do anything, it probably would not be talk. xxoo

Yes. It was the post WWII generation. The Baby Boom. There was an unpopular war in Vietnam with 18 year olds getting drafted but no right to vote. JFKs assassination rattled the world. Assumptions were being questioned. Rock was relatively new. There was a mixture of cynicism and idealism- John Lennon embodied that well. And kids today look at this generation and say "OK Boomer."

Good old George Harrison. He was a perfect fit for the Beatles, both musically and temperamentally. When the Beatles broke up in 1970 I was a 14 or 15yr old hippy. I still believe in the true hippy ethics of Peace, Love and Understanding. Of course I live in the real world but that does not mean that I have to like it. I do like it but there's always room for improvement. It's called evolution. Anyway, what's so bad about believing in peace, love and understanding. You'd have to be a greedy and twisted individual not to believe in Peace and Love. You don't have to grow your hair long and all that. That's only an unimportant trivial uniform. The whole thing is not to be uniform as we are all unique with all the same requirements in life. Peace to everyone. That's not just a slogan but a genuine requirement for a better and peaceful world. In other words it's just everyday common sense,Lastly when George talks about Rolling Stone being critical, I think he's talking about the Establishment being critical. The Beatles were no fans of what we call the Establishment and they are no fans of people who point out their influence, even their existence and negative power. A little controversial perhaps but I believe it to be true.

"Any Road Will Take You There"
"...Ah lord you pay the price with the spin of the wheel and the roll of the dice
ah you pay the fare --
If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there
I've been traveling through the dirt and the grime from the past to the future
through the space and the time,
traveling beneath the waves, in watery grottos and mountainous caves
Ah Lord you've got to fight with the thoughts in the head and the dark and the light..."

Weird I've literally heard george say he wanted, dreamt and used to picture himself famous with money cars and a big house. He didn't start acting/telling people material things and fame didn't matter until like 1968 and even then just watch/listen to the Let it Be sessions wherein george is the only one who ever brings up money, and always in a penny pinching way, one of my favorite moments is when they are deciding where to play, and someone suggests finding a good charity to which george responds laughing that "charity starts at home"

Well, as he said, he certainly cared about becoming famous in the early days, before the Beatles became successful. In 1975, when this was recorded, George was already world famous and quite wealthy.
By 1975, George had already released “All Things Must Pass” and the live album from the concerts for Bangladesh. These were major hits, were well reviewed (in general), and his legions of fans loved them, and him. He knew very well, by ‘75, that he wasn’t about to fade away into obscurity. No matter what the press wrote about him. I was in my teens and twenties in the 70s, a Beatles fan since ‘63, so I witnessed all of this and I know what went down.
The Beatles’ breakup was very upsetting to most of us fans, and we were desperate for anything they produced individually. And hoped they would get back together at some point. So George’s fame and place in the rock pantheon was established by ‘75.
Not to be cynical about it, but it’s a lot easier to say you don’t care about fame (and the advantages of being a former Beatle) when you have it, than it is when you have nothing and nobody knows your name. Not to say that being famous was a picnic for him. But he didn’t exactly walk away from fame and fortune when it came to him.

It’s disturbing to hear George talk about Pete Ham’s suicide. Badfinger left Apple 🍏 and went to Warner Bros around the same time George did. It’s highly unlikely George was unaware Warners was suing Badfinger for a fortune because their manager Stan Polley ran off with all their money including a large sum in a Warner escrow account. Pete hung himself because he saw no way out, with a baby on the way & flat broke - yet was one of the top songwriter/singer/musicians of his era. George could have helped them out, or at least ran interference for them at Warner Bros. Former Apple Press Officer Derek Taylor was also an executive there during that time. Simply saying “Pete was ready to leave” is a bit cold & short-sighted. He needed help and nobody came. His suicide was avoidable & unnecessary. So much for the Spiritual World over the Material World. Sometimes a simple phone call can make all the difference in the world. 📞😢

that’s actually the point he was making, that Pete was suffering and “people who were supposedly your brothers” hadn’t been there to help him and he felt that he couldn’t go on - he referred to what happened to Pete as an example of what he was saying about in the 60’s so many people were about spreading love and positivity and suddenly in the 70’s they seemed to have given that up

I actually learned of Pete Ham's death when this interview was aired on one of the album rock radio stations back in the 70's. I was stunned when George said "he hanged himself". I was a big Badfinger fan and had no idea. After reading of the sad financial state of Pete and the band, I thought maybe it would have been nice if George could have taken them in at that vast estate of his until they could have gotten it together...simple thinking of course, it was a much more complicated situation with Pete.

In his adolescence and post-adolescence he'd duck out from home to do gigs to score a few bob which he'd otherwise not have. In lieu of sitting around at home watching the telly with mom and dad. Still have to think in the longer term about the future, but nothing wrong with the more immediate in the meantime. Then he struck lucky. Came across Paul and then John who were in it for the duration. He's in because by then his playing was totally up to standard. Then its a matter of going with that to see how long that Career Advice can be put on hold. Then its commitment, not to let the other two down in any inopportune way. Then it's " brilliant " as everything gets wound up and everyone is set as nicely as they were ever going to be, and then its basically peachy for the next decade.

George grew out of the Beatles first (1967) because he was the most spiritual and hooked up with Ravi Shanker. He again hung around for his mates but he was still happier somewhere else. Same with John when he ended The Beatles in 1969. Ironically Paul who waned The Beatles to go back (like he ended up doing with Wings) filed to dissolve The Beatles partnership in the end.

George was not disrespected...he was still learning his craft. John and Paul were the hitmakers. Other than Something and Here Comes the Sun is there any other songs written by him during his Beatle years that could have been a major Single Hit Song? Not better than what Paul and John came up with. So i know he was frustrated and Paul could grate him asking him to play a certain way but Paul was the overall best musician in the group and could play a pretty good guitar himself so he envisioned guitar parts and asked George to play certain things so George could contribute. Yes, George and Ringo would be left out of a lot of creativity towards songs but Ringo added a lot pf unique drum parts and George guitar parts too. Having been in many bands myself i can say that its seldom a Democracy and usually only part of the band gets to make the major decisions and make the creativeness. No band can have all leaders. There has to be people that are happy to just play and not bitch. the bands where everyone wants to get their way or say usually disintegrate over too much politics. The Beatles had a successful formula even if George and Ringo had to be content in their roles as followers not leaders. Im sure they loved the money J& P made for them with all the hit songs.
