The 2006 Daytona 500 is still a convergence point for all of the field fillers: Shelmerdine raced for himself (27) Arnold fielded Larry Foyt (50) Phoenix fielded Mike Wallace (09) Shepard raced for himself (89) Hoover fielded Carl Long (80) Belmont raced for himself (59) Score (Technically Peak Fitness at this time, but whatever) fielded Kevin Lepage (61) Hermie raced for MBA racing (00) Can't wait to see how long this goes
William Edwards' Mach 1 Racing 98 eventually became Front Row Motorsports, which Randy Lajoie (64) and Chad Chaffin (92) both attempted to qualify for the race, and Chaffin had that gnarly tire blowout and crash in the Duel
And, McGlynn Motorsports, who Carl Long partnered with in 04 and 05, fielded the 74 Dodge for Derrike Cope, who drove for Arnold, SCORE, Mach 1, and the 94 team that is coming up in the Stanton Barrett episode in 04.
Excellent episode, especially as a NASCAR and wrestling fan. And as an autistic person, it's interesting to hear how it was treated back then versus now, where it's more accepted as a difference in brain chemistry. Always liked Hermie because of his charity work as well, great to hear about all the things he's done for the sport, and outside it.
I shared this video with Hermie, I see him from time to time. The Sadler’s are a great family, they do a lot for the community. You do a great job with this videos Brock. Love learning the history of these smaller teams and drivers!
Love the reference to tna and also it is cool to hear that Hermie is an advocate for autism. My brother is autistic so it is very near and dear to my heart.
Fascinatingly, Hermie announced he will be running for a Virginia State Senate seat in a newly redrawn district. He also co-owns a modified team with Bill Stanley, the VA State Senator from Martinsville's district. His driver is Bobby Labonte.
1: The Field Menace 2: Attack of Shelmerdine 3: Revenge of Arnold 4: A New Phoenix 5: Shepard Strikes Back 6: Return of The Hover 7: The Long Awakens 8: The Last Belmont 9: The Rise of SCORE
The Stanton Barrett episode is exciting to look forward to! Especially for a Front Row Motorsports fan as he ran and attempted a lot of races for them in 2005.
I've had the chance to race against Hermie Sadler a number of times on iRacing, and it's not uncommon to find him there. That's always been very cool to me, because I frequently picked his car in the old NASCAR Thunder games because young me liked cars that had numbers starting with a zero, and his #02 fit the bill. Learning more about drivers from this era in the RotFF series has been a joy, and this one was no exception. Thank you for these well-made and informative videos!
42:20 - Haha, I just had a funny thought. The last time I played nr2003 I played the base game, and I remember going to the driver roster and adding Hermie Sadler and a few of the developer-created drivers to the entry list. I just liked the idea of having the "field fillers" be different from race to race. Anyway, I remembered that because of the different college sponsorships Hermie had in '02. Virginia Tech was one of the cars Hermie had in the game.
Actually it’s Jeremy Clements with 294, Allgaier didn’t run xfinity in 2014/15. Clements would be at 364 if it wasn’t for the 2 race suspension in 2013
once again more A+ content from you. always a joy. I've been a nascar fan for 25 years and I still learn something new watching your videos digging into the less glamourous and lesser known sides of racing that slipped past the mainstream. you've definitely changed my perspective and how I look at the "backmarkers" of nascar.
I still wonder why Hermie didn't ask for help from his younger brother for either Wood Brothers/Yates to supply him with decent rides. I mean Elliot's still in contract with Ford teams by the time Hermie started his own... And then I watched the video, and found out that Hermie did ran on Yates car, although just in the 2004 fall Talladega race. And I'm excited for Barett's episode, since I only know him from the Nascar Thunder 2004 game, where he appeared with his #60 car from the Busch Series.
Surprised you didn’t mention the Front Row starts Hermie had in 2005 for them like making the 2005 Pepsi 400 in the #92 Taco Bell car. Still an amazing episode regardless!
Yay a new one! I hope this becomes a recurring series even if it needs a time machine. There's been plenty of interesting field fillers all through time. A series set on the 80's field fillers would be fun. Dick Brooks and crew would be a fun look.
Man this really brought back some memories. I sat across from Hermie's pit stall at Bristol for the Cup race in 2004. I watched his crew pit the car all race long. I probably wouldn't have remembered this had his pit stall not been directly in front of me. Awesome video!
I was at my grandads most Saturdays, and Emporia was just about a hour away, so he was always our “hometown” driver. In fact, the Sadler Travel Center is where we had to drive to to get lottery tickets back before NC had a lottery. Loved the Virginia Is For Lovers car.
Damn, Hermie was a smart dude, really well-spoken and good at promotion. Getting into UVa and UNC is a huge accomplishment (I got rejected from both 😞)
FoSho is an absolutely fantastic restaurant made better by being easy accessible to truck drivers, haven't been able to stop there in a few years but last time I went (somewhere around 2014) Hermie brought my food to the table and I was just kinda dumbfounded
As always, this episode of ROTFF is one masterpiece of a video! I really love this series so much. Keep up the awesome work and I'm looking forward to the next episode of ROTFF.^^
Didn't like them calling it a "disease" Hermie didn't even correct the pit reporter and just cried and said it's hard. I don't think anyone really knew much about it back then, at least Hermie knew better than to get involved with Autism speaks.
Right on, but today's TV coverage is too agenda-driven. The only time an also-ran gets mentioned is if they crash. The chase guys are the only ones who matter to the networks.
@@NotSteveCook yeah RUclips is becoming the new TV anyway. You have more control (so far) over your own content. On TV you are at the mercy of the studios and such
That was a good video on Herman I think if he would have got a good ride in the cup or the Bush series I think he would have won a lot of races he was an awesome race car driver I wish he was still racing today him and his good race car drivers I wish both of them were still racing today
Thank you! It's definitely a challenge, and often takes multiple revisions when I find new material. Hermie was a lot like Carl Long in that both kept great records and had lots of press releases.
I do like the mention of Bruce Driver. He had a great car owned by Don Hawk, Pennzoil and Tonka Toys backing. They had good backing just could never materialize good finishes. Plus with the loss of Dale the 01 to 03 seasons kinda fell apart with Don going in different directions
25:39 Maybe not the mugging so much, but we (they) need to see the drivers more in this sort of way. Get their mugs out in front of the public. "Our contestants this week" men behind the mask humanizing elements kind of thing This isn't Monster Trucks or Drag Racing, the drivers are the stars of NASCAR. Of course, they are all pimply faced kids these days, but that's up to their "stylist" to figure out. I want to know who is running into who. More. And why we should love them or hate them. Somebody send a memo!
When's the next episode? I'm commenting here nine months later and there's still no episode 10. I just finished watching all of the other episodes so what's holding up?
I wouldn't consider Morgan Sheppard a field filler. Under budget uncompetitive but not intentionally. There was many guys who intentionally started and parked for a attempt to have financial gain. If Morgan had the money he would buy the tires and run the race. Unlike others mentioned as a fieldfiller
Never understood why Sadler didnt put his own dealerships on the cars for races where he had no sponsor. I suppose the idea is to let em know a sponsor is needed but..
The 2006 Daytona 500 is still a convergence point for all of the field fillers:

And, McGlynn Motorsports, who Carl Long partnered with in 04 and 05, fielded the 74 Dodge for Derrike Cope, who drove for Arnold, SCORE, Mach 1, and the 94 team that is coming up in the Stanton Barrett episode in 04.

When we needed it most, episode 9 of the field fillers is here!
It feels like the introduction gets louder and more triumphant every episode! I love it haha

Excited for the Stanton Barrett episode next! Always been a fan of his and he's had a really interesting career
Fascinatingly, Hermie announced he will be running for a Virginia State Senate seat in a newly redrawn district. He also co-owns a modified team with Bill Stanley, the VA State Senator from Martinsville's district. His driver is Bobby Labonte.
Field fillers is fast becoming my favourite series, anywhere. Long may it continue!
1: The Field Menace
2: Attack of Shelmerdine
3: Revenge of Arnold
4: A New Phoenix
5: Shepard Strikes Back
6: Return of The Hover
7: The Long Awakens
8: The Last Belmont
