- On the night of May 22, 2004, eight “field fillers” complete the 25-car grid for the Nextel Open, the 30-lap qualifying race for the 20th renewal of the newly rebranded NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge. At the time, the likes of Morgan Shepherd, Kirk Shelmerdine, and Andy Hillenburg aren’t considered serious threats for the win - or even winning a vote from the fans. But racing is an unpredictable sport, and the list of contenders can change in an instant.

Oh my gosh, that story about the Andy’s racing for a pizza and hiding Gary Nelson’s truck behind tires is absolutely hilarious 😂
Andy Belmont himself just has a good sense of humor.
Had me in tears over here 😂
and the other teams join in too
"We're racing for a pizza and none of that other shit mattered" If that doesn't sum up what racing SHOULD be about, I don't know what does.
Really good episode. How NASCAR/FOX/NBC hasn’t caught on to your talents and offered you a position with them doing more retro based content is beyond me.
"everybody ran for cover, and could fine none!" what a great call by Mike Joy
There were two bits of irony surrounding Spencer and the #4 in that crash. At the start, he got dumped by the car that stole Kodak from Morgan McClure, and at the end, he got backed into by the very #41 he got released from after 2002.
that starting grid was gold
9:03 Husqvarna sponsored a ton of Dash series races in 1995 and is why we have the televised broadcasts of them, so I do love that company
I was 14 years old attending this race and pulling for Derrike Cope! The second race NASCAR race I ever attended.
My favorite race ever ran.
This guy really loves Nascar.
This was probably the wildest Open race I've watched in my time as a race fan. Definitely a crazy night.
Brock is starting to get loud enough to wake my entire neighborhood up during the intro. Great video as always Brock
Ok that combining of 2 of your most synonymous series was extremely clever. 😆
Thinking about who I’d have chosen as a kid: Baker, Marcis, both Parsons, both Pettys, Ruttman, Shepherd, Schraeder, Speed, Wallace. Then I’d probably just check Joe Ruttman, Lake Speed, and Dave Marcis an extra time each.
THE FIELD FILLERS
I just wish a field filler went on to win Daytona or something big. Your passion for the underdogs really has ignited a fire in many people brock
an epic battle over pizza, I wonder if other drivers have bets with each other like if Bubba Wallace and Ryan Blaney make a bet who ever finishes better than the other gets a free lunch or whatever. that would be funny as hell.
also we get to talk about Mach 1 Inc.! with the Bodines!!!!!!
Or Kleenex for Bubba😢
God this series just keeps getting better man.
Plz continue doing these plz and more teams.
Started watching this series during lockdown, love it man
The 14 drivers I would’ve selected for the Invitational would be the following:
Richard Petty
Kyle Petty
Rusty Wallace
Bobby Hillin Jr.
Bobby Allison
Benny Parsons
Phil Parsons
Tim Richmond
Lake Speed
Morgan Shepherd
Buddy Baker
Joe Ruttman
David Pearson
Dave Marcis
Now tell me that’s a field of drivers that ANY short track promoter at the time would be envious of.
That entry list right there is stacked as hell in hindsight
Been waiting for the next installment of ROTFF and it's well worth the wait!
Also, I can't stop laughing at the battle for pizza story... XD
This Rise of the Field Fillers series just brings back so many memories of watching these races and seeing what they ended up doing over time. Great work as always!!
WOOOO THE FIELD FILLER SERIES IS BACK :D
I love that the last NASCAR cup race for a Pontiac also has two whole stories bolted to it, that's fantastic!
Great video as someone that watched it realtime...lol
Dave Despain was awesome and I highly recommend the last episode of Wind Tunnel before the Janet Jackson Super Bowl "nip slip"...lol
The Invitational/Open Fan Selection Format in '86 was Nice when you mentioned it
it had JD so yea
Once again, another awesome upload, it goes to show the attention to detail you give to the sport and respect to every competitor, even those others may scoff at. Also, excited for the WW Motorsports episode, Stanton Barrett’s from my home state!
I was at that race sitting at the exit of turn 2. I was 16 and hadn't been to a Cup race since 1990 when Dick Trickle won the open. I had fallen out of watching racing for about 6 years at that point but this was the race that reignited the flame for me.
My favorite race of all time.
Man, Jimmy Spencer was a real trip. Always good for a great quote.
Keep them coming! I binge watched them all!
I think I have this series intro memorized word for word now haha, nice job as always!
The intro fires me up so much. I need it as my alarm clock
19:33 2004 All-Star Open Starting Grid
"One of NASCAR's most unique creations is a last chance qualifier."
To be fair, it wasn't originally intended to be a Last-Chance Qualifier, and only once was it preceded by heat races.
Brock I’ve really enjoyed the Field Fillers videos. Keep up the good work
Dear Brock Beard I’m Looking Forward To episode 11 of Rise Of The Field Fillers 👍💪
I swear, you sounded so much like Eli Gold at 3:27
Hey Brock love your videos as always I was wondering if you took requests? If you did could you do a video on all of 43 200 wins?
Alexander, Arrington, Bierschwale, Bouchard, Boys, Dwyer, Ellis, Hillin, Means, McDuffie, Pond, Ruttman, Schrader, Wawak
Awesome video! The amount of research you put into these is incredible.
That was excellent 👌 Your research always pays off with interesting stats & trivia that you will never hear from the networks.
Thank you Brock and keep up the good work.
Fantastic work as always Brock. Phenomenally done.
dave despain 4 president on the rear of the 59 is so good
My vote would go for either King Richard, Kyle Petty, Rusty Wallace or Buddy Arrington
Richmond, Schrader, Wallace, Shepherd, Ruttman, Petty (R), McDuffie, Means, Marcis, Allison, Baker, Parsons (B), Pearson, Bouchard
Such a cool video on the 2004 Nextel Open in what's been an amazing series with the Rise of the Field Fillers, Brock. As for the fourteen I would want to see in the Atlanta Invitational, my choices would be: Bobby Allison, Buddy Arrington, Buddy Baker, Jimmy Means, Benny Parsons, David Pearson, Kyle Petty, Richard Petty, Tim Richmond, Joe Ruttman, Ken Schrader, Rise of the Field Fillers entry Morgan Shepherd, Lake Speed, and Rusty Wallace.
Great video as usual! I was wondering if you knew why Ward Burton was locked in to the 1999 all-star race if he hadn't won a race since 1995?
Rusty Wallace - King Dick Petty
Lake Speed - Bobby Allison
Morgan Shepherd - Buddy Baker
Ken Schrader - David Pearson
Tim Richmond - Benny Parsons
Buddy Arrington - Phil Parsons
Kyle Petty - Jimmy Means
Great job as always 👍👍😉
As a long time nascar fan, your video's are great!
LFG! IT'S BAAAAACK!
This is by far my favorite channel on youtube!
Thank you!
KP or Belmont would've been my vote.
Bobby Allison, Buddy Arrington, Buddy Baker, Dave Marcis, JD McDuffie, Jimmy Means, Benny and Phil, David Pearson, the Pettys, Tim Richmond, Kenny schrader and rusty Wallace!
Awesome stuff as always ❤
This was great
Kyle might as well be a field filler driver at that point his heart wasnt in it. He just wanted Adam's 45 on the track and nothing wrong with that
I got some “You Can’t Do That On Television” vibes from that intro
I watched the whole series in 2 days
Thank you - I hope you've enjoyed it.
@Brock Beard loved it wouldn't mind doing it
Seems fun
Omg this is good stuff man
Jamie Mac could absolutely save a way gone racecar!
IT'S BACK!
Hey, Brock...
Since this came out before 10, and hints at #10 at the end, shouldn't this episode be 9.5 instead of 10.5?... Obviously it's too late to change anything, but I thought I'd point that out
Actually my thinking was the opposite. This episode was intended to come out after Episode 10 (No. 94) but before Episode 11 (No. 98), thus 10.5. I'm working on 11, but I haven't entirely given up on 10 yet.
@@LASTCARonBROCK Ah, okay so you were hinting at the #98 for episode 11, got it😊
@1:00 I['d pick Bobby Allison, Buddys Arington and Baker, Trevor Boys, Bobby Hillin Jr, J.D. McDuffie, Jimmy Means, Benny and Phil Parsons, David Pearson, Tim Richmond, Joe Ruttman, Lake Speed, and Rusty Wallace.
Subscribe to this guy 🎉
So I take it episode 10 will come after this?
Episode 10 is postponed until it can be completed. In the meantime, the series continues with Episode 11.
With a car as trashed as Kerry's was and being able to hold on as long as he did, makes you wonder what kind of piece he had before the wreck.
What’s the background music during the race?
"Get Tough" - TrackTribe (same as the theme to this series)
I never knew about the 85’ open and im kinda stunned i didnt. Good thing i didnt, they would have ended up with Bobby Wawak winning the vote in a landslide if i did 😂. Not buying Bobby Hillin getting in legitimately. Having said THAT back THEN i would have went with WAWAK, WALLACE, SPEED,SHEPPARD,RUTTMAN,PHIL PARSONS, BENNY PARSONS,MCDUFFIE,MARCIS,BOUCHARD,ARRINGTON,SCHRAEDER,BAKER, ELLIS. NOW id switch Wallace for Alexander or Means. Any way you slice it BENNY WINS
I would like to know why Kodak Left the 4 car thank
why in the word didn't Sergeant Sauter become his default moniker? That's genius. lol
Sounds too similar to "Sgt. Slau*****". Vince McMahon and WWE would've sued everyone involved like hell
Hmm so you say field fillers so far. I wonder if it was a certain team that had doge coin as a sponsor 🤔🤔🤔
