A few points -if I may ( as a retired Oxford academic ) Magdalen College - and the bridge are pronounced ' Maudlin '- Magdalene College is in Cambridge - maudlin college - maudlin bridge :) In the history of entertainment, Oxford, and especially academic Oxford were well presented through the long running, and award winning British tv police series ' Morse ' and the follow on ' Lewis ' and ' Endeavour ' series, created when Harry Potter was in nappies :) They have their own dedicated fan following !!! My own college, Merton, one of the three oldest colleges in Oxford should be on a visitor list, if only to enjoy the walk along the cobbled and attractive Merton Street. Of course, and it goes without saying, visitors should seek out the many historic Oxford pubs and their close association with luminaries such as Tolkien, C.S Lewis, The Inklings, Morse and so on - The Turf Tavern is especially popular :) Oh yes, and Harry Potter as you mentioned - I suppose !!!!!!! Anyway, nicely presented and well rounded, so a very good effort indeed :)

Very colourful opening and a place we have never visited before and I like the fact that everything there is walkable. The cathedral looked stunning and reminds me a lot of Durham cathedra and a lot of real history there. Impressive museums there, most places are lucky to have one but three and such good ones too, so much more there than I would have expected. The inside of the chappal at Keble College was amazing, such a surprise. Who would want to live in London when you have a place like Oxford almost on your doorstep! Cheers Alan

As an Oxford resident and someone who used to work at Christ Church as a kitchen porter, you've absolutely nailed it with the recommendations Oxford has a lot of interesting history, which sadly we weren't taught about at all in school. However, as I've gotten older my curisoity led me to learning more about the city and I definintely learned a thing or two from your video!

In Wiltshire a local chided me as I was about to visit Oxford. “They’re toffs”, he said..While I went anyway, that was the moment I realized the English people are awesome!
That was a great roundup, I recommend Christchurch, Magdalene, and the view from the spire of the University Church in the High Street, all of which I visited recently. The covered market is lovely too. Tolkien fans will want to see Merton College where he worked, as well as the Eagle and Child pub where he and CS Lewis and other literary men read out their work to each other over a pint.

It's also where a young American Politics student called William Jefferson Clinton (in)famously smoked dope but didn't inhale the intoxicating fumes.

Been to those places this mid June; Magdalene College Christchurch College Oxford University, Radcliffe Camera 🤳 Bodleian Library. Also visited Ashmolean Museum 🖼️ and and the other one, Natural History Museum.

Maybe you need a top 10 of the town, not gown. For food, it is not the Covered Market you go to, but Cowley Road. And there is a lot of nature and wildlife to see, such as Shotover Hill and the Spindleberry Nature Park with its willow dragon, and sports venues such as the Kassam Stadium, the Oxford Stadium (both in the Leys) and the Ice Rink. Then there are the quirks like the shark sticking out of a roof and stolen bollards.

A few points: Hertford's bridge is actually inspired by the Rialto bridge in Venice; the Bridge of Sighs looks rather different. Secondly, if you're going into the Ashmolean, do be sure to see it's unique treasure: Alfred's astel. When Alfred wanted to reinvigorate learning in Britain (which in those days meant reading the Christian bible) he had 50 bibles made (all by hand, as printing hadn't been invented) and each contained a jeweled astel (a place to mark the line the religionist was reading from) of immense value. Only one remains, and it's in the Ashmolean. This video has some lovely pictures but it's very lacking in VO content.
thanks for watching and for the detailed comment. I seem to have fallen for a common myth regarding the Hertford Bridge. Although it doesn't really look like either bridge to be me. As for the Alfred's Astel I agree I should have mentioned it... its always difficult to know what is too little and too much information to share in these types of videos. I usually include the things that personally interest me but this often means I overlook things that are more historically important. Overall I try and keep the videos as short as I can as many people have quite short attention spans these days (me included).
You missed out on the magnificent Sheldonian Theatre, where Oxford University students collect their Degrees, whose painted ceiling is surely equal to that of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. There is a small viewing gallery on top of the building which, to my mind, offers by far the finest views of the City of Oxford's skyline. Why no mention of the Turf Tavern, the well-hidden medieval pub which played a cameo role in Thomas Hardy's great novel entitled "Jude the Obscene", where a young American Politics student called William Jefferson Clinton smoked dope but (supposedly) didn't inhale the intoxicating fumes? It might be worth mentioning that Oxford University has three Choral Foundations - Christ Church, Magdalen College and New College - where casual visitors can attend Evensong for free, whereas by rights they should be paying GBP 20 to hear world-class choirs singing for 45 minutes!

I am sad I missed the viewing gallery in the threater, as an amatuer photographer I love a good view so that is one for sure I will visit next time. As for pubs... everywhere has great pubs so i dont find them to be that special or interesting as a tourist and also im not that keen on drunk people :)
I hope that he's a regular attendee at Evensong in the beautiful College Chapel! Has he ever watched a game of Real Tennis at the court just across the road? It's like a cross between Lawn Tennis and Squash!
Oh jolly good !!! I am a Merton College alumnus, now retired, and for me for over thirty years Merton provided me with academic stimulation and satisfaction. Make sure your son spends some time in the 'old library' the oldest continuously functioning college library in Europe - or so it seems :)
@@Barnyz for a pint try Turf Tavern tucked in between Holywell Street and New College - I haven't been back home in 9 years, so I hope it's still there, but since it's been there for centuries it probably is! I don't think they do meals. For pubs with food I'd go a bit further - the Talkhouse at Stanton St John, The White Hart at Whiteham or the Trout at Wolvercote. Food changes with pubs so, no guarantees. You'd have to go back and check them out!

Addendum to my comment below - if I may. It would be remiss of me not to mention one further place to visit, and that is the Blackwell Bookshop - an Oxford institution all by itself. One can dissapear for hours, literally within this fabulous multi-floored bookshop, and the thousands of books and associated material available for purchase, not to mention a rather good cafe, where you can enjoy your new purchase - allow a few hours for complete enjoyment :)
Thank you another good suggestion. I used to spend many hours in bookshops when I was younger. Sadly these days they are becoming few and far between :(
@@Barnyz Yes, indeed. My late wife and I retired to a country property, but sadly, the local town cannot even boast a bookshop. Happily, Blackwell`s provide a very good international delivery service, so I continue to enjoy regular monthly purchases as I have done for over fifty years now - thank goodness :)

The colleges and Oxford in general need to cut loose the Harry Potter connections (at least brush it over), considering the city and colleges (at least three) have history going back a thousand years! That's way much longer than a book+movie franchise that's been around for only 27 years. The above, not directed at Barney in anyway - but at the trend to mention HP in various contexts related to sightseeing in Oxford, in general.
Why start with controversial leaders slant and then say let’s not dwell on that; why mention it then? (Actually of course Oxford has given us just about ALL our leaders because that’s where a goodly portion of the country’s most intelligent people are educated; can’t let Cameron Johnson colour that too much. After all it gave us Thatcher and May too😂 and Blair 😞)
I did consider editing that bit out as it's a travel video... but it creates a little contrast/context for the stunning architecture and culture shown in the video. Not many cities have had such a big influence so its a difficult topic to not mention.

As for the Alfred's Astel I agree I should have mentioned it... its always difficult to know what is too little and too much information to share in these types of videos. I usually include the things that personally interest me but this often means I overlook things that are more historically important. Overall I try and keep the videos as short as I can as many people have quite short attention spans these days (me included).
You missed out on the magnificent Sheldonian Theatre, where Oxford University students collect their Degrees, whose painted ceiling is surely equal to that of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. There is a small viewing gallery on top of the building which, to my mind, offers by far the finest views of the City of Oxford's skyline. Why no mention of the Turf Tavern, the well-hidden medieval pub which played a cameo role in Thomas Hardy's great novel entitled "Jude the Obscene", where a young American Politics student called William Jefferson Clinton smoked dope but (supposedly) didn't inhale the intoxicating fumes? It might be worth mentioning that Oxford University has three Choral Foundations - Christ Church, Magdalen College and New College - where casual visitors can attend Evensong for free, whereas by rights they should be paying GBP 20 to hear world-class choirs singing for 45 minutes!
Thanks for watching. This video is just a top 10 so i could not include everything - perhaps next time I should do a top 15 or top 20. I am sad I missed the viewing gallery in the threater, as an amatuer photographer I love a good view so that is one for sure I will visit next time. As for pubs... everywhere has great pubs so i dont find them to be that special or interesting as a tourist and also im not that keen on drunk people :)

Oh jolly good !!! I am a Merton College alumnus, now retired, and for me for over thirty years Merton provided me with academic stimulation and satisfaction. Make sure your son spends some time in the 'old library' the oldest continuously functioning college library in Europe - or so it seems :)

@@Barnyz for a pint try Turf Tavern tucked in between Holywell Street and New College - I haven't been back home in 9 years, so I hope it's still there, but since it's been there for centuries it probably is! I don't think they do meals. For pubs with food I'd go a bit further - the Talkhouse at Stanton St John, The White Hart at Whiteham or the Trout at Wolvercote. Food changes with pubs so, no guarantees. You'd have to go back and check them out!

Addendum to my comment below - if I may. It would be remiss of me not to mention one further place to visit, and that is the Blackwell Bookshop - an Oxford institution all by itself.
One can dissapear for hours, literally within this fabulous multi-floored bookshop, and the thousands of books and associated material available for purchase, not to mention a rather good cafe, where you can enjoy your new purchase - allow a few hours for complete enjoyment :)
Thank you another good suggestion. I used to spend many hours in bookshops when I was younger. Sadly these days they are becoming few and far between :(
@@Barnyz Yes, indeed. My late wife and I retired to a country property, but sadly, the local town cannot even boast a bookshop. Happily, Blackwell`s provide a very good international delivery service, so I continue to enjoy regular monthly purchases as I have done for over fifty years now - thank goodness :)
@MrTorleon I have a Kindle now. It's much easier, and it weighs nothing, which is great for travelling 😊

I am sad to say, an old fossil, I have never lost the pleasure of receiving a new book, the tactile enjoyment of the feel, the weight of the pages, that special look and aroma of an unopened volume , the anticipation of reading the work of serious scholarship and learning- and much, much more - a Kindle ? The colleges and Oxford in general need to cut loose the Harry Potter connections (at least brush it over), considering the city and colleges (at least three) have history going back a thousand years!
That's way much longer than a book+movie franchise that's been around for only 27 years.
The above, not directed at Barney in anyway - but at the trend to mention HP in various contexts related to sightseeing in Oxford, in general.

Why start with controversial leaders slant and then say let’s not dwell on that; why mention it then? (Actually of course Oxford has given us just about ALL our leaders because that’s where a goodly portion of the country’s most intelligent people are educated; can’t let Cameron Johnson colour that too much. After all it gave us Thatcher and May too😂 and Blair 😞)
I did consider editing that bit out as it's a travel video... but it creates a little contrast/context for the stunning architecture and culture shown in the video. Not many cities have had such a big influence so its a difficult topic to not mention.
