    I'm an OR nurse. PLS don't expose the scar to the sun for a few years. Keep putting on lots of sunscreen on it if you have to. the scar will fade better if you do ♥ (a. i love watching AbroadInJapan and that's how i know you; b. i will not comment on the nurses behavior you spoke of in the last vlog, 'cause i'm still in shock...OMG! no professional nurse make you lay awake & naked before surgery and/or be annoyed with you when awakening after surgery ; c. stay safe and have a great life!!!).

  • @ArtofLoyLoy
    @ArtofLoyLoy 2 года назад +134

    Keep your scar covered in the sun for the next two years so it doesn’t get discolored. We always put heavy sunblock or had sunglasses on my daughters eyebrow scar(recommended by dermatologist) and today 14 years later, her scar matches her skin tone.

    • @inspiritedchristian
      @inspiritedchristian 2 года назад +14

      Seconding! Strongly recommended protecting the scar from sun exposure for at least the next 1-2 years. Hopefully the original incision was done along the natural neck folds too so it’ll be even less obvious!

    • @RSkies
      @RSkies 2 года назад +10

      Thirding! Its fresh skin, so baby the heck out of it. ESPECIALLY in the sun. Spf 50 (98% uva/b protection)
      Consistent moisturizing with aloe vera or vitamin e oil will help the scar fade as well.

      I have a scar on my right upper butt cheek, it's covered all the time for obvious reasons and it still healed very pink so far.
      Definitely wait those 2 years at least before you start to worry even if you do everything right because the body needs time. For me it's been 8 months now since I got that scar and at least it doesn't randomly hurt anymore.

  • @venzuan

    I'm really happy to see that your voice is doing great and that you're recovering.
    It's always interesting to see what items are hard to find in Japan / don't exist in Japan that people bring back from their Country since it gives me an idea what I should personally bring when I'll finally be able to take a vacation to Japan. Like most of those items you'd assume they would have but they don't because it's not part of their culture.

    Happy that you are recovering, and look forward to your jaunt with Chris - the two of you have a very natural and funny chemistry together going back to Journey Across Japan when you tried Black Ramen.

    Glad you see that you're doing well, and I'm happy to see more vlogers living in Tohoku. I loved living near Sendai and (now near Morioka,) it's always nice to see the more overlooked parts of Japan that I love explored on RUclips.

    I think I can confidently speak on everyone who's watching behalf when I say we're glad you're okay! Or as okay as you can be after that ordeal you talked about in the last video. Beyond your health and mental wellness, I'm sincerely hoping your business ventures in the fickle land of stationary sales hasn't been too adversely affected either.
    I'm just happy you're back tbh! :3

    You did good Sharla, its challenging, both mentally and physically what you went though. My scar reminds me when I look in the mirror that I'm strong, and its abundantly clear to everyone here what a tough cookie you are

    Hey Sharla,
    I've been in one hell of a Japanese youtuber binge fest and found my way to your channel, binged so many of your vids only to end up on this one!
    First of let me say, I am glad you are back in Japan and that you are feeling way better!
    Secondly, binging your videos like this made me realize all the ups and downs you've had, you are an amazing person and great job for being such a trooper through everything, I'll be sure to stick around and see what the world has in store for you next! :)

    So glad you made it back to Japan safe and sound, and I figured that their quarantine procedures were still fairly strict. Your scar is healing beautifully, and I hope the 14 days passes without incident!

    glad to see you're recovering well! a trick I learned from when I had a scar on my cheek is using lip balm with sunscreen on the scar when going outside to help protect it from darkening

    Glad to hear you're back safe in Japan, Sharla. 🙌🏼 Can't wait to see what other adventures you go on - especially that one with Ryotaro. Mark my words, it'll most likely be dinner at a place owned by a friend of his, then a cool stay at a fancy Ryokan. 😂👌🏼

    My daughter went through that arriving process for the Olympics and it was also sooo long.
    She is now in Victoria and started working at the Fujiya store you worked at.
    Glad you are doing well now after a tough couple of months! Look forward to new videos soon.

      You should learn to make your own, it's not too hard and that way you can use things that are allergen free and locally available. Corn starch is actually better as a thickening agent than flour (IMHO) because it has a more pleasant texture and gives a sheen to the surface. 😉

    Don't worry about the scar. As someone else says in the comments:
    Every one tells a story.
    Mine one's a real ripper, from my chest down past my naval. That was to remove 2 tumours that were both inflating at a ridiculously fast rate. (On the day of surgery, one was the size of a football, the other the size of a tennis ball).
    Despite their size, they didn't hurt a bit; the opposite in fact. In the days leading up to surgery, I was euphoric. That was good because I had absolutely no worries about the surgery whatsoever. Just went with the flow.
    My scar fades with each passing year and it's always buried under clothes anyway. (Not that I was ever keen on bikinis or crop tops). It's now a shiny silver colour and I think that a well-placed necklace would sufficiently disguise the one on your neck if you're overly-conscious of it while going through that 'livid' stage.
    However, just remember that most people are going to look at your 'face' to speak - then it's all about eye contact or lipreading.
    Nobody really looks at anyone's necks. I'd no idea my friend's mum had several long tuberculosis scars across her neck until she told me 'years' after I'd met her. Never noticed them beforehand. So, I'm sure your scar will barely raise a comment.

    Just wanted to thank you for sharing your story. Because of you, I had my thryoid checked and she found a lump this past week. Never would have thought to even mention my symptoms before your video, mine are minor and annoying but not life altering like yours were. Glad you're doing great!
