Great video! Would you ever consider doing a series or a video on fixing diapers (like replacing aplix with snaps, replacing elastic, etc)? I'd love to see that and I know tons of cloth diaperers would find that helpful 💕
Thanks! Great idea! I had a box of fitted diapers with relaxed elastics, I just don't have them with me right now. If I can get them back maybe I can experiment with replacing the elastics. I've heard that it's pretty easy to do with certain pocket diapers. 💜 Heidi
I borrowed my mom's sewing room and machines to film this video. I don't have my own serger, just a sewing machine. I made some cloth panty liners and used an overcasting presser foot to make the edges look serged. Only works for 2-3 layers of fabric, though. Let me know how it goes making a prefold! 💜 Heidi
I'm new to sewing/serging and I LOVED your trick on how to hide the serger tails!!! I've made a few imperfect inserts and hope to get better. My child is just about done with cloth diapers but I would like to learn how to replace elastics, Velcro, etc and be able to give them to caregivers that need them. I've repaired a couple of pocket diapers but I'm not very good at it 🙂
I learned that trick from my mom! Have fun sewing inserts. You're the second person to mention repairing diapers. I haven't tried yet, but it would be a great way to give cloth diapers more life. 💜 Heidi
You can think of GSM as thickness, and in general the thicker the fabric the more absorbent it will be. Fiber content also plays a role, with hemp or wool being more absorbent than cotton. Most of my fabrics I had left over from previous projects, so I didn't buy them specifically for diapers, but they were absorbent types of fabrics.
I'm glad I'm not the only one doing this... thank you for all of your videos. You've been very heplfull ❤ I'm diy-ing most of my cloth diapers, including wool covers. My budget is close to 0$ 🤭🙃 I'll be using a lot of repurposed materials, like old T-shirts and bath towels, and also knitting soakers. But I'll keep things simple with flats and prefolds. Maybe a few fitted diapers for night time. I think the wool soakers will double as pants - I don't see the point covering those, they look cute and there is no need for buying and pulling on extra pants. I'm going with EC anyway... For the elastics... you might want to sew a canal first, then put the elastic band inside and the fasten it by sewing on both sides. You can add about an inch of fabric on the sides of your pattern (where the elastics goes), fold it in forming a canal and then insert the elastics. That makes it soooo much easyer to replace it later.
Thanks for the tip on sewing the elastic! I also didn't have the right type of elastic when I filmed this video. I really like the Trimsie fitted diaper, but wish I would have made it out of a softer fabric. I'm going to try making the Trimsie training pants next. Flats, prefolds, and wool covers sound like a great stash! And very zero-waste repurposing material. If I ever have time I'd like to try making a wool cover. Enjoy sewing and knitting! 💜 Heidi
@@ECpeesy zero money and zero waste is the way to go 😊 it also feels nice to diy. I always feel proud seeing thing done. I'm so thankfull I have some skills and the awareness. And also to have your and some other ladies' great content. I'm expecting my first baby and I'm alone in it (the dad decided to run and hide) and cloth diapering, EC and minimalism is so rare here in Slovenia. I felt extremely intimidated by everything but you guys made everything seem simple and natural. I'm happy to make things for my baby girl now 🥰 I'm sure you'll make a video for the training pants by the time we need those 😉 I'll be sure to follow your channels and keep learning from you! Thank you for sharing your experience 🥰 I'm happy to sahre mine. I can send you some pictures of my wool covers after I'm done and then let you know how it worked out. Wool soakers are so easy to sew or knitt. I hope I'll be able to get some old sweaters or wool fabric scraps and sew some. Wool fabrics are crazy expensive! I hope the knitted ones do the job😊 Thank you again and enjoy your work and family 🙏🥰
@@klepece Sorry to hear that you will be parenting alone. But it sounds like you have done lots of research and will be well prepared. If you use Facebook, there are groups for sewing cloth diapers and wool diaper creators. That's neat to hear that you live in Slovenia! That was one of my favorite countries when traveling in Eastern Europe. It seemed very environmentally conscious. We enjoyed our time in Ljubljana and Bled.
@@ECpeesy First of all, I'm so happy to hear you've seen our tiny land! I feel so blessed living here! Ljubljana is a wonderful small city and people there really are so open minded. I enjoyed living there for 11 years. Then I had to move back to my home town, Velenje, which is much more industrial. But things are moving in more natural ways of living here, too. Now I live about 10 miles out of town on a small ranch, closer to Kamnik-Savinja Alps. You're more than welcome to visit Slovenia again and see our other pearls! I'm happy to host you, if you ever find your way back to Europe 😊 I don't use any social media anymore 😊 I have a garden and horses and don't really care much about what others do 🤭🙃 I did find some wonderful sewing patterns online and I have some tailoring and knitting skils and I can't wait to start with my DIY baby projects after I finish renovation 😊 I just ordered some merino fabrics online and me and my mom ❤ are already knitting cute baby clothes. We'll DIY everything except furniture and a stroller and upcycle what we can. I'm going very minimalistic with baby products. I want to save money and enjoy my time with the baby and my animals, not having to clean and tidy up all day long 🙃 I really did do a ton of research and I'm happy I found you. Your videos gave me so much useful info and sooo much motivation! I'm especially thankful for your videos about wool! I love the idea of having all natural materials and have very good experience with wool in other areas of life. And I love the fact that wool soakers can double as clothing and require so little care. Quite a few thing less to buy and wash! So, thank you again for what you do!
I’m so glad I found your channel! We are expecting our first this spring and I’ll be making wool covers , French terry preflats, soakers and a few cotton velour fitted diapers. All the fabric is here but I’m hesitant to decide on a pattern. Have you reviewed the fitted pattern used in this video? Thanks for sharing 💛
Welcome! I haven't tried the Trimsie fitted diaper on my baby yet, since Baby is expected in February. I think the Trimsie pattern would work great for making a wool cover. It's shaped similarly to the Babeegreens side snapping wool cover that I love for newborns. For a fitted diaper, I'm also eyeing the pattern by Max and Meena, since it could be made without a serger and the NB size has an umbilical snap down. Have fun sewing for your baby! 💜 Heidi maxandmeena.com/collections/digital-sewing-patterns-pdf/products/max-meena-diaper-pattern-sewing-pdf
Did you already sew your fitted diapers? I've been using the Trimsie fitted on my newborn. I really like the shape. It's more narrow between the legs than the other fitted diapers I have. I just wish I had made it out of organic cotton velour, so it would be softer! The French terry is a bit stiff. 💜 Heidi
To serge stretchy flats, would you use a 3 thread narrow overlock stitch? No need to do 4 right? Sergers are so much more complex than sewing machines!! What did I get myself into 😂 so fun though. Also, do you think rounded corners is easier or can you just turn the fabric on a 90° angle like you can with a sewing machine?
I'm no expert on a serger. I borrowed my mom's when making this video, and she did all the settings. I think we used 4 threads. Rounded corners are easier for me. I've been using a regular sewing machine with overcasting foot for the diapers I've been making lately. Have fun sewing! 💜 Heidi
I only showed a little clip of sewing on the elastics. I wasn't very good at that step, myself. The pattern I followed has instructions. Are you planning to sew fitted diapers? 💜 Heidi
Are you asking how long it takes the diapers to dry? I mentioned that a little in my video on prepping new diapers. I will make a wash routine video once my baby is here. ruclips.net/video/fXidzD0_F4k/видео.html

I'd love to know more about your fabric choices! Does the absorbency correlate to the GSM or are there other factors?

I use a walking foot when sewing elastics. It holds everything in place at the needle while I stretch the elastic. It’s almost like a third hand.
Thanks for the tip
