That part where Zatoichi was in anguish after knowing he had just killed Sensei Hirate literally made me cry - it brought to light the reality of how sometimes fate can be so cruel … so very cruel. Sad. So very sad.
True. However Hirate was a dead man walking, Hirate knew this and wanted to die at the hands of someone with immense skill, this being the blind Swordsman Zatoichi, his friend, his only friend. Japan is a very unique place with a unique history. Warriors are an odd lot.
These (corrected "these") Japanese movies have always had a place in my heart, I used to watch them with my dad when I was a kid, he liked them too, the good acting, the mood of the movies, sweet and bitter like life. Excellent upload and well worth a like.
i had tears in my eyes......so intense acting.....thank you for sharing

Visited many Japanese cities during the course of work. 1964-2006. Have strong affection for Japanese culture, food, sports and friendship. Bought this whole series and viewed episode many times. I liked the small cities best.
Anyway I could pay for a copy from ya? Whole series! Been trying to get my son to get into it, too slow, my son haha! Hidden gem these are. Accidently came across thes3 and fell in love. Hard!
i wont say about the framing the close ups the music the story...but the scolding of Zatoichi to the yacuza boss was fenomenal in acting and in life lesson, love every second of all Zatoichi movies and series every bit of it is like a nail striking my hart and many times brings me in tears out of shame in my lifes mistakes that would avoid if i saw the movies earlier in my life ... thank you for the upload
I remember seeing movies featuring the blind samurai when I was in college some 60 years ago. Wonderful cinematography. I’ll watch everything in this channel.
I just bought the Criterion Collection BD Boxset Of Zatoichi The Blind Swordsman. It's truly a wonderful series, especially this 1st film Tale Of Zatoichi
So much irony. Two wise men, two good men. Thrust into conflict by the hoards of scoffers and scoundrels they serve. It’s the story of life that keeps repeating. If we don’t all learn from bushido our final lesson will be from the tip of the sword.
For me Shintaro Katsu is one of the greatest artists of all time. He was not only naturally gifted and traditionally taught, which is a bonus, but he always pushed the envelope, creating new and exciting genres in film and sound. There’s never going to be another like him
Two warriors who recognize each other in their mastery and show each other respect in a deadly labor of love! What could be more gracious and beautiful.
Thank you for posting this abridged version of a feature-length film. Your edits gave me enough long segments to appreciate the quality of an original I have never seen.
So sad, Sensei Hirate smiled when he found Ichi on the bridge. As if he is ready and eager to die to escape his ailing body. Even sadder, their conversation on the bridge actually in earnest between friends, not some made up words.
Not so rare amongst warriors, but in this era of humanity, true warriors are quite rare. Crossing blades was not personal, 2 professionals doing their jobs. It's bizarre to people who are not warriors but warriors it's not strange at all. The US Marines learned the heart of Imperial Japanese warriors and when August 1945 came, US Marines largely had immense respect for Japanese soldiers, they did not give up easy, and threw their lives away in a heartbeat for combat for some, others just saw orders.
This is quite the odyssey through times, beliefs and customs (however idealistic), that (in a now redundantly bizarre world of neurotic/pathological ideologies), generate far more authentic respect and thought than what contemporary "progressives(?)" would have us believe is "truth." A trained and ultra-skilled killer of men, Zatoichi nevertheless and forever retained his humanity. This is on full and simultaneous display in both his self-contradicting and self-wounding agreement and great reluctance to grant Hirate's final, existential wish; the desire to die bravely like a man and a warrior in a final and ultimate test of skill (however obvious, inevitable and fatal the outcome), instead of waiting for his illness to take him or being "slain by scoundrels." Such poignancy and appreciation for life when it's displayed and balanced against our mortality is almost never seen in film anymore. On a more technical level, I enjoyed the complete lack of blatantly artificial sound effects in the fight sequences when the blades cut their intended victims. It's a shame later movies universally employed such jarring theatrics. The only thing I might say against this clip is the editing. Throughout the temporal narrative (which in the film was no more than 48 hours) Zatoichi's head was practically shaved, but at the time of the fight, it had grown out about two weeks worth of hair. A mild, nitpicking point, but being a Japanese film, maybe it's like that blatantly but intentionally crooked pillar in an otherwise flawless tea-ceremony hut. A nod of awareness to the imperfections of life. And I'm not being intentionally pedantic, I've just been drinking vodka. Guess I should have had sake...
I spent the night watching what I was able to watch while of these Fantastic Zatoichi Movies while in Tokyo way back in 1973. Since then I have cherished each moment of rewatching everyone that I can find. It is a legend now as more and more people try to copy what he has created. So thank you and yes I do remember this movie being quite a bit longer than this version. But why bicker over the little things as Zatoichi would say. ha ha ha. Tiny bird dance over clear blue water. ha ha ha. I sing for you Ichi.

Wow... I forgot about that scene. Looks so strange after having watched every episode of the TV series and all the movies. I'm so used to his rolling his eyes up. And I always wondered if that cause Shintaro any eye strain or pain. He probably did it so much it didn't hurt anymore.
29:30 Master Hirate simply didn't attack at this point although he easily could have, because all he wanted was to die at the hands of Zatoichi instead of those scoundrels.
There is film of Hattate Miki before this encounter with Zatoichi Detailing his life in Edo and his journey to Sagawasa. I don't see Tale of Zatoichi with english subtitles on you tube anymore
The problem is Devil runs the world. He is lier and murderer. That's why we've got the Gospel about the God's kingdom. Jehovah would put everything in order. The dead will be resurected and we'll meet our beloved ones again! :-)

These films are absolute works of art!!!
Agreed. You can find the explanation of these characters in the book of Nietzsche: Twilight of idols.
Lo son con justificada razón.
Absolutely.
I agree. Have seen all of the Zatoichi films. I Love the scenes of Humor as well. Pure Gold!

I was 15 years old in 1972 when I found out about Zatioichi. Hooked ever since. I have all the movies and 1/2 of the TV series. Love them.
I must have watched all of these. The best films ever.
These were all great stories, very underrated, very well made. I didn’t discover them until the 1990’s and was hooked.
この高貴で儚い雰囲気。音楽だけでなく、一つ一つの小さな物音迄もがもの哀しい。素晴らしい名作で、大好きです。勝新万歳。

I like Zatoichi. His act has been the best to me.
This is a clip from a cinema movie from the early sixties , it’s a pity I can’t find the entire movie anymore only clips it’s a great film
Criterion has almost the entire film series available for streaming with subscription.

Finally Mr. Hirate acknowledged the skill of Swordsman ship owned by his regular masseuse after being proven by the fight on the bridge .. 👍🤩🙏
