Every time I watch this series, it just comes up with some of the best plots that, while keeping in similar beats, offer up stories that just feel awesome.
At 1:42 is Makoto Fujita. He plays the lead role in the series "Please Hire Me" which you can see on this RUclips channel. The character he played in that series is fitting to his real life pacifism. In the "Please Hire Me" series he played a Ronin traveling with his wife and looking for an officers job where he didn't have to kill anyone. His wife's character was played by Shintaro Katsu's wife Tameo Nakamura. I have searched for his name and I have finally found it by searching this Zatoichi episode on Google and looking at the cast members. Makoto's pacifism was in part caused by his brother being killed in the Battle of Okinawa in World War 2. You can learn more about him in his Wikipedia article. He died in 2010.
I wonder if anyone has ever done a complete Ichi body count from all the movies & the series? It has to be an average of at least 15/episode. This was an especially high body count episode. Two rounds with the guys in the black cloaks & hats, plus an entire gang at the restaurant. Wearing a black cloak & hat is the equivalent of being a red shirt on Star Trek, if you are issued a black cloak & a hat, you aren't going to have a recurring role...
I agree with Zatoichi. Ikizukuri/Ikezukuri/(Fish) Prepared Alive...is cruel. And I'm a certified sushi chef. I think of it this way: Would you slaughter a cow, a lamb, a bird or a goat while it was still alive? Of course not. You would kill it first. Sometimes in this method, the fish are filleted on only one side, and left still alive until needed again later. This also, I think is cruel. If you're going to kill an animal to eat, then kill it; and then eat it. There is no need to make it suffer. Even from a standpoint of freshness...I do not see the difference in ikizukuri and si.ply taking a live fish, and killing it, and then preparing it. No need to prolong its life before death.

Good question. We can assume they belong to the same group who tried to kill him on the road earlier. And in prior episodes people coming after Ichi always wear the same oval hats, subtle recognition help for viewers imo.
@@sonofsouth2800 Yes i understood my myself a few time ago. Thanks to care. I think there are many cutting scènes in those episodes, so sometimes the progression of the story is not so clear as needed. It have to be done in 50 mn and no more.

This series just keeps getting better and better.
Zatoichi movies and tv shows are such a happy place for me. Only Gunsmoke comes close.
My favorite Japanese series and the women in this series are BEAUTIFUL 😍
I like the soft music and arrangement and the presented values coming slowly to the surface.

Brilliant episode
I often wonder who gets the thankless job of burying the corpses of the guys he killed. Maybe the animals get them ?
Yeah they’re pretty much sashimi by the time he’s through with them!!!
They don't get killed, this is film not real.

7:54 I don't understand why Ichi is killing people in that tavern. Any idea ?

Also as soon as they see him walk by, they draw first and try to attack him. True to his word, he doesn't draw first.
@@marvin.mcfly7749 Good message for all of us
