I'm in taekwondo, and I can tell the difference in style. I've been taught to block a kick or a punch from the inside, not the outside like shown in this video. I don't think one way is better than the other, just different.

I've had very good success with that technique except I tend to shuffle forward as I do it so i don't take the full force of the kick. Of course I also b;lock with a rising elbow helmet block if the kick comes too fast or if my guard is already in the high position.
In Mauy we have that too but will add front kicks to push of the attckers
