Thank-You! This is the first time I have seen that exercise to help the side kick. At 64 and many surgeries, my mobility is seriously lacking. I am going to try that exercise. Thank-you so much for all your tutorials.
My dojo is far and only open 4 days a week so I'm forming a training schedule to train by myself once a week, primarily to focus on kihon. This is perfect, thank you so much! Will be going through all your vids for training tips. Subscribed!
I'm struggling with my side kick at the moment because my flexibility is poor. I'm so glad I've come across this video of yours, I'm now going to follow your advice. Thanks heaps, Osu!
Not many people could execute a Yoko Geri correctly as it ended up as a combination of a Yoko Geri and a round house kick. Slowing it down in all it's elements make it a very powerful and rather crisp elegent technique to practice . Liked your tutorial in explaining this!
Very nice tutorial! I'll be sure to bring that exercise to the dojo. I'm a kyokushin practitioner myself, but I thinks it's important to draw inspirations from many different styles; this is a great example. Osu!
Oooo, I like that evil squatty exercise. I'm always on the lookout for new ways to torture College Dojo kids (and myself, let's face it) if I'm leading warmups. Thanks! Oh, and thanks for the tips on side kick ;-)
I have been practicing kyokushin since 9 years, started watching your videos recently, they're informative and helpful, and an interesting way to present them, support from INDIA
What a good teaching!, I really enjoy this videos. Yoko Geri is one of my favourites kicks while Im doing kumite. Thanks Jesse, greetings for Puerto Natales-Chile. (Southern Patagonia)OSSU.
Thank you very much for yet another great, well-explained, informative video, Jesse! I'm going to try that squat/extension drill to help with my sidekick.
Great video. Although Japanese and Okinawan Karate is usually far superior to the Korean "karates" in almost every way---The Koreans do typically kick much more correctly---and this video is excellent, and on the level of how the great Korean kickers do it so well!! Thanks and have a great day : )
+Eu Sou O Macarrao im not trying to bash korean arts, but what i think he meant was that korean arts rely too much on kicks, where as karate relies on a much more balanced arsenal of techniques (punches, blocks, throws, sweeps, takedowns, sticky-hand etc).
+RecoveringGenius I understand your preference for karate, as I am a die-hard karateka as well. However, we must be careful not to engage in the "my art is better than your art" arguments. Firstly, every martial art has the goal of ending or diffusing conflict. Such arguments only continue conflict, which negates the whole point of martial arts. Secondly, styles don't win fights, people do. Victory doesn't go to the person with the "best" style, because there's no such thing. It goes to the one with the best preparation and skill. Much respect from a fellow karateka, OSU
+Rohan Davey Agreed, and that wasn't my point. I am actually a Korean Tang Soo Do stylists, but also a Japanese JuJitsu Black Belt. The Koreans are great kickers, but they are not nearly as deep as the Japanese in their analysis of their craft. My point was he is kicking every bit as good as a Korean, which is rare...
I don't think Japanese martial arts are superior to Korean martial or vise versa. Its the martial artist and how they apply it to a fight or in a self defense situation.
It is actually soku tou, with a long o in the end. I was going to say that the kanji was missing a stroke because katana is written a bit different, but you are actually right there. Thank you for the knowledge :)
Very good! I am 68, and have rejoined a dojo after 45 years; trying to earn the brown(s) and then the black! Every pc of advice is most welcome for me, tho' by any standards l am very mobile and very fit. The very clear advice on the form of excercise to strengthen the particular muscle reqd is, yes, very good! Thank you.
+Jesse Enkamp (KARATEbyJesse) Well, if it's true that people are most themselves when they do what they love, then that shouldn't really be that surprising! xD Thanks again Jesse-san
HONTONI SUGOI! I always love new ways of practicing kihon and this is no exception. Just a few minutes after watching this video I went out and tested the exercises out myself. While the "Water Wading Workout" was somewhat difficult, by focusing on the opposite opening leg, and the muscle you pointed out (and with a guiding of a broom stick), my side kicks have never been crisper! So... DOMO ARIGATOU GOZAIMASU JESSE-SENSEI! (Can't wait to see the round house kick video.)
I love you Jesse!! I found your channel just now: Im loving all your content , and the peaceful and caring energy that you give. Only the best for you, thank you and good practice. Oss!!
I m an algerian surgeon I m 35 years old . After 20. Year when I stop karate I m now decided to restart training . I will contact you just when I have my great split and mastering some karate kicks. I hope that you comment and give me some encouragement.
I hope this will help improve my low side kick, because l really can't even do my legs split, it hurts my front hips and I have a very stiff ligaments. I am lucky you have this subject and the mobility and flexibility. Thanks.
Great presentation jesse. Because of my stiffness in my hips I'm limited to the height at which i can kick . My kick works best aiming for the knee. I do try to get higher but leg seems to have a mind of it's own. Any videos i can see to stretch my adductor muscles. Cheers Don
Next time our Sensei says anything with “geri” in it, I will have to suppress the giggles. Great video with very useful explanations. Thanks a lot!! You lift my motivation 🙂

4:01 or when u learn a new language. At first i run out of words but with time and practice (reading and listening) now i can have a very fluent conversation.
That's an awesome-looking mobility/strength exercise for yoko geri. I'll try using it right away, and look at introducing it in the dojo if I find it's working well. Thanks!
I struggle with these kicks as well I find my body turns on me when I try and Yoko Geri kekomi which is annoying so I’ll try this. Thanks Jessie ossu 🙏
Side kick is my favorite kicks especially I kick more on my left even though it's operated but effective a lot of Taekwondo can't do side I studied Shorin Ryu Karate 30 years Taekwondo 4years
Great content as usually. Moreover, there are two versions of those side kicks. The first one is "yoko kiyagi". That kick looks like a whiplash. To perform this kick the speed is needed. Mostly we use the front leg for that. Out of that kick could be created another one - ura mawashi Geri.( hook kick); what about the second version of side kick, so it's "yoko kekomi". Unlike the "yoko kiyagi" it is powerful kick, the aim of which is not snapping, but getting through. This version of kick has been used by Bruce Lee in two inch famoused video. Also the same we have with Maja Geri( front kick). So the "yoko kiyagi", should look like bad mawashi Geri ( round house kick) it is normal. The aim of this kick itself is to hit the target what is up, right from the buttom to the top. The trajectory of that kick should be like in "uppercut".
I’ve found what seems to work well with a yoko kekomi Geri is use kogeki 5, or 7 as it allows you to get a slide motion with the foot that’s planted. Kogeki 7 allows the hips to open making that thrust easier. At least that’s what works for me.
I also order your Shishin Gi to celebrate my first brown belt. Love it.
Lena Smith well done x
I hope it's a black one now
Thank-You! This is the first time I have seen that exercise to help the side kick. At 64 and many surgeries, my mobility is seriously lacking. I am going to try that exercise. Thank-you so much for all your tutorials.
Love the exercise technique, especially given my age (47yrs) this will give my old skills new life. Respect :)
Your such a good teacher I love the way you describe things so well and in detail

Looking forward to trying this exercise out , Thank you for your time teaching us .

best side kick video.. Thanks for posting
What a beautiful ground floor technique for enhancing side kick. I now finally found my lower body warm up.
Very nice tutorial! I'll be sure to bring that exercise to the dojo. I'm a kyokushin practitioner myself, but I thinks it's important to draw inspirations from many different styles; this is a great example. Osu!
Thank you Jesse. Abraços do Brasil!
Omg I just spat my water out at work when you said the Geri comment.

I just died laughing when you said "Geri, well it actually means diarreah" :D
Thanks Jesse, you're the best 👍

the power in that low sidekick was unreal
Very helpful and instructive.
Wow! One of your best videos, Sensei. Thank you so much!
Thank you Jesse! I need to improve my Yoko Geri, and this video is just what I need to improve my kick the next level.
Thankyou Jesse will put in practice in class.

This is probably my favourite kick that I would love to perfect. I've been making progress, but I think this will help speed it up. Thanks!
Hi Jesse, I love that low stance walking drill you do at the end. I've been adding it into my training. Brutal. Does it have a name?
Maravilhoso!!!! Obrigado Jesse!
It is actually soku tou, with a long o in the end. I was going to say that the kanji was missing a stroke because katana is written a bit different, but you are actually right there. Thank you for the knowledge :)

Gracias Jesse. Saludos desde Perú 👍
Enjoy your teaching methods man, very sharp.
Thanks. It helped me on the spot. I trained it for many years and now I see the mistakes.
Cool tip, I'm going to practice it and see how it goes. I hope my side kick gets half as good as yours.
When you talk it's just like I'm reading one of your articles :) Really clear advice, thank you!
Thanks Laura! Makes me glad to hear. That's probably because I'm being myself :-)

Hmm, first time I've ever seen that particular low squatting exercise. My students are not going to like you :D
Nice advise... enjoyed your teaching.
That dojo is awesome!
Thanks! It's my dojo in Stockholm, Sweden. Hence my Swenglish accent ;-)
I also found that putting my big toe up and my little toes down helped with striking with the blade of the foot.
Muy buenos tips para desarrollar la habilidad para patear. Good video.

Very interesting video. Those squats look hard but I'll give it a go. 🥋
Great didactic explanation🥋Osu!👊🏾
I´m very glad that I found your channel! It´s well done and very inspiring!

Osu Sensei amazing thank you for your tutorial
Great video again. Really need to focus on these. My side kick sucks and I will admit it. Although Swedish roads sound very lawless 😆
