  • There's a lot of positive things to be said about Mass Effect. Andromeda is in a galaxy of its own in the worst possible way. For many, this is the entry that killed the Mass Effect franchise. For others, a misunderstood black sheep. With a half decade gap between me and the last time I played through this game, I decided to suffer through it one more time for all of you to see if anything had improved.

      @l.p.antaree8216 Год назад +8

@@Slayer398 I saw some analysis of the Asari models and why they looked as bad as they do, apparently it's mostly down to the texture and layering. In ME1-3 there is only 1 asari body and face model, which is that of Liara, Samara/Morinth is the only exception. The difference being that for skin textures, the OT used a gray base model and applied colored textures to it along with some unique shading, I don't understand it completely but it is able to portray much more variance this way. Andromeda uses only one Asari body and face as well (Except PeeBee) but the base model is Blue, being painted on with some markings rather than different skin colors and shading, so they all look much more similar than the Asari of the OT. Andromeda also has a problem with the female humanoids where all the necks are too thin for the size of the heads.

I agree. I think the main problem with the game isn't so much the game itself but that the trilogy came before it. The story and characters are somewhat derivative of what we'd already experienced. However, if this is someone's introduction to a Mass Effect game, I reckon it's pretty solid. I believe the gameplay and environments are probably superior to the trilogy and so with some quality DLC/expansions, it had the potential to be right up there with some of Bioware's best work. It'll be interesting to see what Bioware do with the new instalment, especially with Starfield coming out and how they might react to that.

There are a couple other things like that with relation to that. I do find the mobility in combat to be extremely fun to play. The gameplay is fun but it's still horribly balanced. Unlike the original trilogy, the only playstyle viable in Andromeda on insanity mode is a combo master or soldier. If you try to vanguard charge and nova on insanity in andromeda, you get mowed down instantly.
So while I like the jump jets and stuff, I don't like the playstyle balancing. I honestly prefer the playstyle of the original trilogy. Choosing a build and sticking to it and having ALL builds be viable for insanity. It also makes the game replayable. Being able to instantly change your build in andromeda not only makes it unplayable for multiple playthroughs, but most builds aren't even viable on insanity in the first place!

Sure the choices and story could’ve been slightly more impactful, but overall I loved the crafting, the fact that we sent people 600 years across the universe to another galaxy, where we are tasked with finding suitable homes in case of “a reaper attack” let’s say. The angara are a fun new species though raw in terms of overall depth. The combat is a change that takes an adjustment but that’s just the result of modernization, and I loved the jumping hovering fights.

Ryder family secret was interesting side story and left so many questions and vaults also had some interesting story behind them, even main story became interesting just before it ended. Oh and that asteroid H-047c was awesome zone/place.
Sucks that we will probably never see sequel for this because stuff started to get interesting near the end.

I've come to find that MEA is 7 game in a family of 8s and 9s that's treated as a 3. A fun but flawed game that showed a lot of promise but couldn't get out of in-office politics (By this I mean how the Montreal and Edmonton studios could not manage a clear vision for this project.) To touch a little on the tone system, it could've gone the route of DA2 where your character picks up the tone over the course of the game through your choices. But unfortunately, it's another idea that fell to the wayside.
Also I've already done another playthrough this year lol. Anyway, looking forward to the next ME (just as long as Shep is left to rest 🥴)

I played Andromeda for the first time this year after a long time of expecting to hate it, and I really enjoyed it. It has some issues with the writing and the open worlds can get a bit boring from time to time, but overall it's one of the most fun experiences I've had on the PS4. Gameplay is great (possibly best in the series), soundtrack is great, sense of exploration is great. The changes to the dialogue system and removal of paragon/renegade was risky, but I think it worked perfectly for a game about someone thrown into a leadership role that they weren't prepared for. Balancing your behaviour between rational and emotional, trying to keep a level head. It's a solid 7/10 game that was just never capable of living up to the original trilogy.

    Noice video! (Y)
The story starting is perfect, I've researched a bit before making a series (and I still have the save to continue), and also in game for in-character knowledge.
The project was made between Mass Effect 2-3 timeline, when it was possible that the Reapers will pick the Milky Way clean of biological life again.
It's not widely advertised but could be put together from secret notes that it was put together quickly with unconventional resources (like Cerberus, and forbidden AI experiment on you) to possibly save the last of intelligent biological life and technological knowledge into another galaxy.
My first surprise (after getting a morning coffee and toilet) was that effectively I am the parent of a newborn, an AI which sees what I do all the time, learning from it.
    Out-of-character I liked it a lot.
For most of the time I solved some problems with the game in-character - for example only I was talking about palinka (a strong, alcoholic drink from Mordor, especially törkölypálinka which is famously bad tourist trap), and there was an NPC with pathing problems beside where I've landed, so I ackowledged her as a consumer, like our stonefaced woman boss on the Nexus, which I knew was from hangover.
Yes in my mistranslated misadventures I enjoy altering translation. :P
So the main enemy boss quickly got a nickname "Keyringhead".
    My main problem were:
-the unskippable animations while exploring the galaxy you've mentioned
-this galactic community was just a reskin of our home; money, pubs, police (for example faction favour point would interest me better than mere money, especially befriending the Enemy and getting controlled mutations)
-there was no real end to strive for, just when the evil one first escapes beaten and warns us of an even greater danger cliche

I actually just finished up andromeda last month, and I gotta say I truly enjoyed it. Like you said, the combat is extremely fun and satisfying and an excellent improvement on the trilogy. The issue in single player is the lack of enemy variety. Not surprising tho. The story is kinda generic at first but it for me picked up and became pretty interesting. The only characters I really liked was Drack, Suvi and my female rider. I made my own rider because I did not like biowares female rider. Definitely it’s writing and story are it’s weakest points, but it’s fun. Definitely so when you consider I did play the game after as many fixes as BioWare could muster, and the fact I only paid $7. Still, if you really love mass effect and haven’t played andromeda, wait for sale and play it. I have no regrets and may even play again in the future. Let me be clear, I never played mass effect until the legendary edition. Before that I laughed and dogged andromeda and even the original trilogy. But when the legendary edition was announced I got excited. I knew it was highly regarded and for good reason. I played the trilogy twice and I fucking loved ever second and will play it again. So I wanted more and played andromeda. I clearly have a different opinion of it now.

The trick is to not stay and clear an entire planet but to move along with the story, it'll tell where you need to go and when and bring you back to finish up naturally. The game really needs level suggestions for the quest list. Not for difficulty but for continuity. The second trick is to realize out of the box, that this isn't an evolution of ME3 but a direct evolution of ME1. Once you get Profile Switching down, the combat is really fun on the hardest difficulty. Taking away control of the party members away is something you'll get used to but never appreciate though.

My biggest gripe will always be that they rehashed and re-skinned Protheans and Collectors. Plus, when you get there, you're not actually making first contact. In my opinion, if they had the villains be the Angaarans, have Jaal join as a spy originally and then realise these new species aren't so bad and have to fight to be seen as equal and to find peace. OR if it was " we got to the promised land, but it's crumbling due to natural decay, how do we survive now", then you could have the Angaarans fighting for your equipment and your ships to be able to travel to the next galaxy in order to survive. That would have been amazing, and also it would make send for Ryder to be Pathfinder, in reality, MC would never keep the Pathfinder title, they may have the technology but they're untested and would be sidelined as an expert in their field, but they would NOT have sway. If it was life or death in the sense that the planets are dying and can't be saved at all, but you have to pathfind supplies, safe passage, etc, it would lend credence. I will never not be mad about wasted potential.

I remember pre ordering that game. Last time I ever pre ordered a game. Was a pretty good game in terms of gameplay, but the story was so painfully mediocre. The jet pack and advanced movement, as well as more freedom to mix and match abilities was really cool. I know it’s completely unrealistic, but if they remade the original games in the andromeda game engine, I would definitely pay a lotta money for that

Well that’s probably never going to happen because the originals were on the unreal engine and Andromeda was on Frosbite which probably why it’s glitches was bad because Frosbite was made for Battlefield and Battlefront but EA forced all their developers to use the Frosbite. I’m pretty sure the rumor now is the newer mass effect will return the unreal engine

I ended up playing it last summer with decent amount of Mods. It was fun, different than the other Mass effect titles, but fun. It definitely felt unfinished and left me feeling like if Bioware wasn't forced to switch to Frostbite midway through development, the game would've been a real gem. Hopefully there's a way to bring this story into the fold with the latest entry, because there was so much untapped potential in Andromeda.

It shows they tried to mimic the plot of Mass Effect 1 but with gameplay mechanisms they could only dream of 15 years ago. Unfortunalty, the story and characters fall short, meanwhile the original games being lacking in terms of visual quality, the plot made up for it.
The Kett and Archon feel like they tried to copy Saren and the Reapers, and the final part with the Remnant city and Meridian is like the race towards Ilos and the Conduit to the Citadel, but feel extremely generic (though the part about the origins of the Angaran was great) even on their own. Saren had motivations and Reapers were intimidating, but Archon is evil for the sake of being evil and who even cares about the Kett outside the cluster, when we've wrecked the Kett the whole game. With the Reapers, they were hinted to be this ultimate, indestructible form that finally took an entire fleet to be taken down.

This game had a chance at being something amazing and if they wernt rushed to push a game out and spent real time developing the characters and made the DLC, it could have been. The gameplay is solid and i actually like the 4 different dialog paths but the reason i think it didnt work as well is that ryder does have a personality its just not a compelling one. Hes not a leader like Shepard. If they ever continue the adronoma story, they should use the same method they did for dragon age and shift the MC perspective to a different character. As for the companions, the only ones i really like are Drack, Vetra, and jaal. Krogans are always great, Vetra is cool but needs to polished (for example, if you ramance her, it doesnt feel like she axtually likes ryder and is more like 'okay'). Jaal is cool but a little limp in his execution. Pheebe is a fun character and i think she matches Ryders energy well but she feels shoe horned on the team. Shes tries to be liara with her knowledge on the remnant but doesnt deliver the same professional energy. Cora is just dull 2d characters and i f*****g hate liam. Liams constant positivity for the initiative contradicts his own negativity for himself. He wants to contribute to colonization but is so annoying i skip past all his dialog.
In a way, ryder being pathfinder ruined his character. The game would have been better if we didnt try to fix the golden worlds but rather focus on killing the kett and helping the initiative along the way.
If we go back to adronoma, we should shift the MC to a soldier fighting the kett and finding new alien allies to fight with. Make the kett a larger threat. Make them compelling. Give us new aliens. Explore who the remnant were and who they were fighting and develop a greater enemy waiting to strike.

If you've got it, it's worth a playthrough. Sure, the story and characters are derivative of the trilogy but the gameplay and environments are great. The game is a bit polarizing because the best parts are so good that I couldn't help thinking how did they get the worst parts so wrong? But that's my bias because of how I feel about the previous games. You kinda have to go in with the mindset that this is its own thing. Nonetheless, it's hard not to compare the worst parts of the game with the best parts of the trilogy. Regardless, there is a caveat, even the worst parts of this game are better than most Action/shooter/RPGs it's just the bar was set so high.

Andromeda was the first Mass Effect game I ever played. I was aware of the series, but never gave it a try. Andromeda was advertised as a jumping on point for new players to the series, so I figured I’d give it a try maybe a year after it was released (and patched up a bit). I loved it. I thought it was a great game. fun to play, interesting story, so-so characters, great combat. I wanted more, so I bought the first three off the xbox store and played through them. I completely fell in love with them, and actually played the entire trilogy through twice back to back. then I attempted to go back and replay Andromeda a year or so later, and I just couldn’t. It just doesn’t even compare. without context, it was a great game. As part of the Mass Effect series it was kind of a joke.

I actually like the humor personally I get some situations call to be more serious but the concept of exploration of a new galaxy even with all the bad starts within the story with the different arcs and the exiles and krogan it's important to keeps positive like making jokes. Also I like the "marvel energy" stuff in MCU and Andromeda. But next mass effect should keep the gameplay and leveling up system as well as customization.

Just an added factoid with this game, they were utterly failing with making the vehicle feel better than the old Mako from ME1, so they just contacted the people who made Need For Speed and asked if they could use their code. After they were paid a large amount of money, they agreed. And that's why the vehicle driving around experience is so much better than with the Mako.

I honestly think that the lighthearted "marvel" tone is the result of the wild success of the Citadel DLC. Which itself was a well-earned moment of light hearted fan service after years of high stakes conflict, but whoever ran the writing team for Andromeda saw that and said "People clearly want a whole game of THAT"

  • @CircumSamurai
    @CircumSamurai Год назад +3

I think it's somewhat unfair to compare Andromeda to the entirety of the trilogy before it, as people seem to love to do. Andromeda really does give those Mass Effect 1 vibes, for better or for worse, where it feels like the start of a series of games. Had DLC expansions &/or sequels been made, I think an Andromeda series could've been great. A single game trying to start a new chapter shouldn't be fully compared to 3 other games with all their DLC's all lumped together at once.
And after playing through the trilogy with LE, I can really see just how many fans happily wear rose tinted goggles when it comes to Mass Effect. The games are really good don't get me wrong, but they are plagued with many of the same or similar graphical, animation, AI, etc. issues that people gave Andromeda hell for. That doesn't excuse Andromeda for having those issues or the state it originally released in, but they've patched many of these issues out & aside from somewhat weaker story/characters it's a fine game.

back when it came out a friend asked about it. I told him "If the original ME trilogy was the original Star Wars trilogy, Andromeda is The Phantom Menace." I stand by that.
The combat was definitely fun and planetary graphics were great, but the plot, characters, races, story was so definitely boring, lacking and did nothing for me.
Multiplayer was a lot of fun, mostly because it was entirely focused on combat. Which I find hilarious given this is Mass Effect. The series origin, jank/awkward combat that was acceptable because the plot, characters, story were so gripping. Now the best thing in a Mass Effect game was the part that stripped away all the Mass Effect.
Should have altered the origin story (why they left the Milky Way) and just given the game a fresh, new title with zero association to the original series. Might have been better received as it's own thing.

So just a few points to cross off as I have a love-hate relationship with how I apparently come off when I give my opinion.
The lighthearted side could have worked if you had time to actually develop a rapport with the other people on your Ark. I don't really watch Marvel movies- but I would assume that the energy works better if those characters have some types of history to work with. Things like "that's your dad!" shouldn't be a line. It should have been Ryder getting pulled to the side, the pair of them talking about the mission, and there being some type of line that hints to the relationship. Simple lines like "I know you can do this," or "If it was anyone else I would be more skeptical," in the context of "You are going to lead this mission." for example. By being very direct, or for instance I believe that both Ryder and Cora are gossiping like 20 feet away from Ryder Snr. about how he acts is not only unprofessional in a workplace setting-- it was downright unbelievable. Those are the types of people that would not make the cut to an A Team like position for anything above the most low-maintenance type work. They would be the two characters that exist to give you a reason to shut it down-- think Joker and Kaiden in Mass Effect 1. You now can either build those characters like ME1 did as it was just a one-off type situation, or you can have them be background noise.
That ofc doesn't fix things like animation or 110% creating an interesting character, it's just the start. You can have a lighthearted character like Liam (by personality) but it should have been he made the cut because he was extremely good at what he did. I'm talking the trope of "Oh he's unprofessional as hell, but the guy can fix just about any machine/wound/emergency he gets his hands on." And then you have the makings for a good foundation to build a character. Why is he so jovial/sarcastic? If he's so good at (insert profession here), why did he leave it all behind to come here? And my favorite when I write any character-- "Why is he doing this?" which opens up moral questions for later on.
If Liam was a top-of-the-line Law Enforcer that had to leave after botching a major situation that became a stain on his department and came here to guide and protect people having his knowledge and experience-- I believe he would have been a great team member. Granted not every character has to be extremely deep with their 'why' question, and as a starting companion maybe it would have been too much. Though him simply stating "it's complicated" to explain later could be a good trade off from deeper complexity.
As for things like gameplay, I never really believe that specifically companion commands will work as well with Mass Effect as they would with Dragon Age. The simple reason being a class like the Vanguard where they are the epitome of "high risk, high reward" where their charge is a core part of their damage and sustain wrapped into one. Just as well, a lot of classes are designed to be particularly good at one thing, and very weak in others. While that is realistic (to a point) it is why I strongly believe there should be off-hand or secondary classes for companions and players. Basically where you have a handful of abilities you can switch over to which allow you a layer of survivability w/o compromising the difficulty altogether.
Example: being a Primary Class Engineer with strong hacking capabilities but those hacks not being able to just shut down biological units so much as make things take longer-- as such they have the Secondary Class of an Infiltrator where they are able to use solo-stealth to move to safety and once getting there, having access to something like trip-wire explosives or simple grenades to help with sub-par or every just weak weapon use.
Instead as of right now, Engineer was kind of memed on for awhile when in reality-- they have been able to completely control, if not just fully shut down practically any combat encounter. They're not as flashy as a biotic Vanguard, but they still have the high reward payoff w/o the major deficit of high risk.
Just my two cents of a few things. This is already way too long of a comment xD
I struggle finding ways to condense changes w/o offering reasons why I believe they are better in the long run. As it stands if I were in Andrew Wilsons shoes I would be heavily avoiding using "live services" so much then claiming that they are the backbone of their revenue as eventually it's going to fail miserably. Hell, Maxis is currently at risk of losing tons of their players to Paralives simply because Alex Massé & Paralives Studios puts more effort into their gameplay. EA could easily become a loved AND profitable publisher the likes of what Blizzard Entertainment was if they had new management.
