The definition of eclecticism: Roy Wood strumming on bass, Bill Hunt punctuating on electric bassoon and flute, and Jeff Lynne on electric piano and lead vocals. A terrific Move tune, deftly delivered!
"Message from the Country" is an outstanding record! They did it as a contractual obligation as ELO was their prospect, but this has some awesome songs by Lynne and Wood!
I wish this was the first ELO album. Add a couple of tracks from No Answer and history might have been different. The final excellent Move singles effectively closed the book anyway.
Roy dejó ELO tras los dos primeros álbums, Roy le deseó buena suerte a Lynne, Roy decidió que Jeff mandara en la Electric Light Orchestra, Roy fundó después una banda llamada Wizzard
It's actually a bass recorder, so should sound more flute-like. As RW owned and played a bassoon (qv his solo album Boulders) I suspect some backing track trickery here.

It’s easy to to see where fellow brummies Duran Duran possibly got their inspiration for “The Chauffeur”. In all, this track sounds way beyond its time of creation. A rare OGWT one that I’ve can’t recall, the quality, as seen, is overwhelming in many respects. Roy and Jeff both prodigious talents, it’s not surprising they parted and blossomed all the more.
I remember walking up the high street in Stourbridge on a Sunday and somebody came out of the bank. So, I trod on Roy Wood's toe. Nice of them to open just for him.
@@22pcirish It looks to me like a version of the "military" grip, in which the stick is held between middle and ring fingers. Several rock drummers have used it. Here, though, it's held between fore finger and middle finger. I've theorised that it was only by holding it that way he could get left and right hands to "mesh" satisfactorily when playing rolls, etc.
I have followed Rock since I was a wee kid in the late 50s, (Jerry Lee Lewis, Lonnie Mack, Gene Vincent, Bo Dudley, and the Beach Boys when they came along in the early 60s, and more). The only thing I can get on the radio up until I was about 18 was a.m. radio. I had never heard of Move until the 80s and that was from RS magazine book, "History of R&R". This song, though it is good, I've never heard until now.
Don't know how I missed The Move in the 60's, just never connected with them, late appreciation has changed my opinion of them, same thing with the Kinks, so many great performers back then, it was probably that there were so many that you were spoiled for choice, so you made your choice(s) and concentrated your energies on the few fave's you preferred!
Bev has a very original grip it’s like traditional grip, but backwards. When you look at his left hand. The man is a legend I’ve had a life time drumming and its down to listen to Bev, Ringo, Keith Moon, Bonham, and Ginger, but Beven was always my favourite
Question for drummers: Have you ever seen a grip like this? It's a traditional grip, but played in an overhand wrist position, with the stick between his index finger and middle finger (rather than between the middle and ring). I also notice, he holds his forearm high over the snare and plays it with a sharp downward angle.
I suspect there’s a backing track here? I can hear more instruments than there are players! But nice to see the basis of what developed into something brilliant.
I didnt know Jeff could play keyboards then. He said in interviews he could only play guitar and he had to learn from Richard Tandy how to play keyboards. Id be curious what effects were used on the bassoon to give it that sound.
My Move/ELO historical knowledge is a bit thin; I never knew that Jeff Lynn was such a good keyboard player. I always think of him as a decently good guitarist with Richard Tandy on keys. But then I came late to the show, after they became ELO, and then worked my way back to The Move.

That is Wurlitzer, but they are just miming to play so this is playback. Just look what Bev Bevan is doing, fills don't match what we are hearing. That chimey sound is most likely tack piano.
It's a shame Bill Hunt never rejoined ELO for touring somewhere down the line. He could always add something that you don't get in the classic lineup. Too light an 'orchestra'? Wonder if it was ever considered or if he would have done it.
This is lip synced? Most, if not all of the program's visits were played live. I hear a vocal exclamation in a break that I don't recall, but there's lots of things I don't remember anymore.

So much talent on one TV studio floor.
Good song, well-mimed.
I thought the Old Grey featured live performances.
seems live to me.
At least some of the keyboard parts are doubled up
Also more than two vocal parts at some points
It varied over the years. I’ve got a compilation DVD and I’d say over half are mimed. Lack of drum mics is a giveaway.
