    Thank you for the review
    I got a few things to say that might help you
    regarding doas (opendoas) you can alias it to sudo if you prefer to have the sudo command but use the lighter alternative
    as for the taskbar poping down honestly yeah i completely understand that not everyone would like that if i had the option to i would make it resistance based where you would have to keep moving the mouse up to make it pop up so accidentally moving your mouse too far upwards wouldn't invoke it
    as for the start menu i also wanted to make a button trigger it but looking at it there doesn't seem to be a way to do that, i might look into it more and possibly find a way to make it work in the next release
    And as for chromium not minimizing that's just chromium for ya ; ) no clue if that's better than having it crash a few seconds on startup or crashing the moment you go to load any site but i can safely say that the web browsing experience is still horrible and i would not recommend it for the time being, it's only there because i can and because it's a necessity for a desktop environment
    as for package managment
    since this is an arch distro it doesn't really come with apt :P that is not something that i can change unless aliasing would be your jam
    overclocking and benchmarking
    to overclock you can simply use DarlingMenu same goes for benchmarking, note that glxgears is not an indicator of system performance it's just a very light and basic benchmark that i put there just to make sure that the gpu wasn't dying and well because it's the lightest benchmark that i could run on anything, in the near future i might add more stuff to the benchmarking utility
    such as a cpu bench before the gpu one and maybe add an optional more stressful benchmark if you feel like it, but honestly i think that it gets the job done :P
    also you forgot to include the overclock (You need to uncomment #include /configs/pi02.txt in config.txt)
    As for video performance
    it did do 1080 60 for me with a bit of spikes here and there, so i assume it might be your overclock?
    Chromium still crashes alot here too lee, trying to mitigate that as much as possible however i don't think this poor 15$ computer will ever run chromium properly no matter what flags you give it
    And by the looks of it yeah that overclock that you applied is not helping the situation XD
    Never seen such a major graphical glitch before lol

      sudo has a security flaw (Not that i care about that)
      But it's also heavier and more complicated to use

    I definitely like the idea of having a lightweight distro specifically geared towards the Pi Zero 2. I've been working on something similar. It's based on Raspberry Pi OS Lite, but uses ICEWM as the Window Manager. After theming, running ssh, VNC server, Compton, Rofi, plank as a doc etc., it boots in about 150MB RAM, leaving as much as possible for applications. Whilst Icewm is very basic out of the box, I've managed to set it up to work as close to a "full distro" as possible. It looks pretty good and is very fast (for a Pi zero 2). As for browsers, I've got Chromium ( which works, but isn't great). I also use Dillo, Uzbl, NetSurf, Links, Links2 and Puffin. Whilst these are all very fast, they're they've each got various drawbacks - Some aren't modern, but implement old JavaScript standards, others don't support JavaScript at all. Links is a purely Text browser, but surprisingly useful once you get used to it. Links2 is similar, but also has a graphics mode which can be used within a TTY terminal using the frame buffer, which is fantastic. Puffin probably gives the fastest experience in a modern browser though, but it's obviously doing the heavy lifting on the server. It's been fun to figure out how to squeeze as much from a Pi Zero 2 as possible and has yielded a very usable little pocket computer.

    • @System64-Fumo
      @System64-Fumo 2 года назад

      Here are some tips that might help you with your distro
      chromium doesn't really run well by default on the pi so i suggest you use some flags
      xorg (Atleast on arch) performs really badly so a wayland alternative would be better, such as what i use in Darling OS (Wayfire)
      Boot times can be improved a little by changing a few things in config.txt and disabling some services or overclocking
      Hope it helps

    • @steven1000000000
      @steven1000000000 2 года назад

      @@System64-Fumo Thanks. Whilst Wayland may be the future replacement of X, I haven't really played with it as yet. Looking at the different Window Managers which support Wayland, I see the only feasible stacking WM seems to be Wayfire. (I prefer stacking as apposed to tiling because it's more comfortable for the vast majority of people.) Would be interesting to see it on a Debian base, but from what I've read/heard, there seem to be a few Wayland issues still. As for Chromium, it's OK, but I've tried to avoid it mostly - I hadn't really thought of tweaking it for better performance. Will definitely give that a go. Regarding boot times, I'm not that worried because it's still relatively fast to boot, all things considered, despite having a number of background services running. I'll give Darling OS a go - curious how it stacks up.

    • @System64-Fumo
      @System64-Fumo 2 года назад

      @@steven1000000000 Sweet please keep me updated, i would love to hear your feedback
      Regarding a debian base, that's what darling os used to be based on but i thought that making it arch based would be a bit more... minimal in a way?
      And faster? plus i'm more familiar with arch based distros and pacman is superior to stock apt (Apt can be made usable with a few mods)
      Either way wayfire is not the only wayland compatible window manager out there but it's certainly the lightest and most feature rich one with the least amount of resource consumption, you can practically enable most of the effects for wayfire on darling os without noticing any performance issues unless you enable blur that's somewhat broken and causes a lot of lag :P

      @@System64-Fumo Whilst I've setup Arch from scratch, I haven't run it long term to really get much of a feel for it. If I recall, the Arch setup on a Pi 4 was a little more resource intensive in comparison to Raspberry Pi OS with the same Window Manager. I thought it might have been lighter. That might be because of the optimizations of R PI OS though. I like the idea of a rolling release, but I'm not that familiar with potential pitfalls. As for Pacman and AUR vs APT, I don't know - I know that people swear by Pacman though. My understanding is that whilst the AUR provides a huge trove of available packages, it can introduce dependency issues. Given I value stability over bleeding edge software, I lean more Debian. Regardless of the underlying plumbing chosen you, can obviously setup the the distro virtually identically, so probably doesn't matter too much.

  • @Stabby666

    Running a video at 1920x1080 isn't hard for a Pi Zero 2 W. Even the older (and MUCH slower) Pi Zero can do it fine, as it's done in hardware. I use them for kiosks using my custom software, where they play videos and interactive apps all day long with no overclock. There are example programs installed on every pi to show the GPU effects, like running 1080 video on rotating 3D objects etc with only 2% CPU usage, since it's mostly handled on the videocore.

    Looks good but I’ll probably stick to a more stable OS for now. Although I haven’t yet tried the pi zero 2 in comparison with other SBC’s I have including the BPI m2 zero (which is available mostly) where the pi’s all of them are very hard to get in US, without scalpers. Pi OS has worked well for my most my pi’s (very slow on pi 3 a+) but I do hope there are some tweaks to this review OS because it does look cool.
    I don’t plan on over clocking any of my units because it can and will catch on fire 🔥, usually starting at power source / too many friends lost their pi zeros, 3’s and 4’s catch on fire due to over clocking. They may or may not have known any better?
    Folks try to crank up the power for running bigger retro games - but to me not worth frying up the pi for a slight better fps. Especially in this hot summer weather - not good idea
    I also just got a tinker board so That will be fun. I wish I can understand the coding better - like I couldn’t get a 2” inch screen to work at all in a pi zero (and a pi b+) / tried to install drivers and supposed to have done so but any small (TFT) screen off gpio will not work, I have like two different ones and neither works - I can’t figure it out and gave up. Tried to make minty pi (altoids can zero unit) but it seems the information for this project has sailed out the ship windows long ago, I can’t find help anymore. Anyways good video

      But maybe in the near future if it becomes more stable and performs better then yeah i would definitely suggest this to people for daily use
      But for the time being it's just a very early build that requires a lot of work and ideally work from people who know what they are doing :P

      @@leepspvideo yeah definitely need to have at least a heat sink and fan if possible - for pi zero 2’s / few of my friends tweaked around and learned runs hotter than zero. I don’t think They didn’t have heat sinks at first. Also, mixing up bad usb power cords can go badly too. The M2 zero runs hot and so does the cm3 lite modules - heck, I know a few folks who’s quest 2 headsets caused fires because overclocking (overheating)
      I still have to play around with zero 2 / I’ve been waiting for them to become more available before tweaking around. Not good to mess one up right now lol - so hard to find at retail and unfortunately I’m broke.

    awesome vid, great demo. I'm setting up a couple pi zero 2 w's and would really like to try this os! i can't find either a "pi world" or "wor" discord server (though, to be fair, i'm def at boomer-level when it comes to discord), but i did join a raspberry pi community on there. i've searched all channels on that community for "darling os" and "zero 2 w", but there's no info. at this point i'm just strolling down the street shouting "amir!" every few seconds in hopes that i'll find this person and they'll grace me with an image..
    it's over a year since this video was posted - anyone know if this optimized os exists anywhere?

    • @leepspvideo

      I haven’t managed it. I did try several older Konstakang Pi 3 builds with no luck back when the zero 2w was new out. The lack of ram will be problematic.

    • @System64-Fumo
      @System64-Fumo 2 года назад

      Yup, i uh wouldn't really recommend pure arch on any pi unless it's a pi4 and unless you are willing to go through a LOT and i mean a lot of workarounds to get things working properly
      mainly graphics stuff and xorg
      if you're on 32 bit good luck because most of the things will either not work or just straight up freeze your pi

      i personally would advise people to not use puffin as it's a security risk

      It does technically run as is usable given that it's running on a tiny machine, but it's not very smooth. depending on the use case, you might also be able to use youtube-dl to download the video and then play it in VLC. That performs very well. The issue is that you need to download the video before playing.

    • @grizzlycountry5539
      @grizzlycountry5539 2 года назад

      @steven1000000000 2 года назад +1

      @@grizzlycountry5539 Yes - definitely not for casual browing, but could work in specific cases. Fun thought - it would even work if you were only using a terminal - VLC plays on the frame buffer and therefore doesn't even need a graphical environment to be running. Playing local videos works well.
