2:08 "Why can't we hear these things?"
River Song: "Spoilers..."
I was about to comment that, but answer it with
"Well, we can't know the answer of the title of the show, can we?" XD
No one would understand it, anyway.
@@michaelbryant3640 Except children, sometimes.
@@azizuladnan2957 One of the many problems I have with Timeless Children is that the name of the Doctor now seems like it means nothing. They can now just casually tell us the Doctor's name and it will change nothing, 'cause it wouldn't even be his/her real one.
It's been ten years and this is still one of my very favourite two parters. As for River...keep guessing. You'll never stop.
I've always looked at River Song's story from the viewpoint of the journey she takes and not the destination....and what a journey it is
That "don't mess with me" speech is simply one of Tenant's finest moments.
The ending to this episode always gets me super emotional, especially River's little speech to the Doctor right before she dies. "You and me, time and space... you watch us run."
The story of River and the Doctor is one of the most brain-bending and heartwrenching stories you will ever see, and I have a feeling you're going to love it. Also there's lots of sass. :P
At this point I believe the reason River was introduced this way, so the audience would be just as confused as the Doctor. I want to say so much more, but I don't want to spoil. I'll just leave with a quote from Hamilton, "Just you wait"
Awesome.
Omg my 2 fav things just got combined thanks lmao
"Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair, and the Doctor comes to call ... everybody lives.”
One of my absolute favorite Tennant episodes, as well a great two-parter .....
:)
River is the best, don't worry.
spoilers
@@brentperkins5055 it's not a spoiler. She clearly knows River will turn up again.
@@talibaozibang9321 it's not that. it's saying that she's the best. I don't think it's a huge spoiler or anything, but right now she doesn't quite know what to make of River. I might be a bit over the top when it comes to spoilers but, to me, saying anything about how one might come to feel about a character in the future qualifies.
You only saw the end before the beginning if you look at it from River Song's timeline. From The Doctor's timeline you've seen it exactly as you're meant to... I don't think you'll feel cheated in the long run. :)
Okay :)
Waters of Mars and End of time ( 1 and 2) is a must.
Yep :)
Just throwing this out there, Steven Moffat, actually write these two episodes. And he in his head, pictured Dr Moon, being some distant future incarnation of the doctor.
Hence why he’s called ‘doctor Moon’ So I’m his head it’s a two doctor story. :)
The great thing about this two-parter with River is you truly get a better idea of how the Doctor lives. Linear experience of time is not how the Doctor lives, so it is understandable that he encounters people in a non-linear fashion much like Sally Sparrow and River Song
*River leans in and whispers*
River: ‘Hail Hydra’
Hahaha.
It's a time travel show. The order in which everything is told has a purpose. The same guy who wrote Blink wrote this, Steven Moffett. He can be poetic and brought quite a bit to NuWho. (You'd have to keep watching to form your own opinion on his writing).
Agreed, Moffat embraces the time-travel element more than any other Who writer i'd say. Have you read his first published 'Doctor Who' fiction BTW ? It's a pretty decent 7th Doctor short story called 'Continuity Errors' and to me it contains a lot of the seeds for his writing on the show.
@@anonymes2884 That sounds real interesting, I need to check that out. I know that you can see some classic Dr Who influences in Moffat's writing, and he's brought to life characters that had been sitting on the drawing board for years. I generally like Moffat's work, though Dr Who thrives when they are constantly mixing things up. Thanks for the recommendation!
Got it.
Time flows like a river unending
Obviously will avoid spoilers but as a general thought, I think it's important with these two episodes to take them firstly as themselves, without considering what may or may not happen in the future too closely. The author of this two-parter, Steven Moffat, is prone to non-linear storytelling (two of his three previous stories, Girl in the Fireplace and Blink, use similar tricks if out-of-sync characters and relationships). This means that in all his works, Who and non-Who, sometimes threads are picked up on sooner than you expect, sometimes later, sometimes never. I guess I'm saying enjoy the ride and try not to feel bad during one episode about what may or may not happen later until it does or doesn't. :) In this episode, the Doctor/River Song thread is really interesting - for a time traveller, the Doctor doesn't often seem to meet anyone out of sequence (off the top of my head I can only think of his implied earlier meeting with Queen Elizabeth I from the episodes from Rose to Silence in the Library - arguably Sally Sparrow, though he only actually meets her once, strictly speaking!). To see it suddenly and unexpectedly happen with someone who clearly knows him intimately is wonderfully left-field and disruptive to his usual mastery of any situation. And then he loses her without really understanding why she's so important to him. That's a fascinating story, and that story is all right here in these two episodes.
Less speculation, got it. But sometimes I can't help it.
@@JustSoShayla Not less speculation, but perhaps less worry about the future. There is not quite a master plan as such, but there are reasons. :)
Remember, this isn't the ending of a story that you saw before the rest of it, because from the Doctor's perspective, this is the beginning. You experience the story in the same way he does.
Donna got the authentic "Silent Hill" experience...
River Song... And she knew, at the end, too...
The emotional stakes only get higher from here! This is gonna be awesome! -"Ren".
When River died the first time round it was sad
Now going back, OH MY GOD THE TEARS
Ohh Shayla...wibbly wobbly timey wimey 😀
Another great reaction x
River song is one of my favorite characters so I'm ready to see your reactions to her in the future. And she knows his name so you know she is special!
It's been mentioned before but yes, River's catch phrase (besides Hello Sweetie) is "Spoilers...." and she's written "backwards" essentially for that reason :-]
4:08 that face always scares me and I feel like it shouldn't. It's a simple distortion of the video but it's done perfectly
It isn't even that bad! It's just so sudden.
River Song was the best thing that happened to Doctor Who lore
Great reaction! I love this two parter. You figured out parts of what was happening where Donna was more quickly than most.
River Song... For the first time and the last time.
Interesting hearing your thoughts on River at the end. Just remember that it's the journey that matters, not the destination. :)
After watching all 10 seasons of Doctor Who Rose was still my favorite 😆 so don’t feel bad is she’s still yours too.
I’ve only ever really “hated” and even then that’s a strong word, one companion but we haven’t gotten there yet.
If you’re interested, Donna’s my second favorite lol.
Favourite companions in order:
1 - Rose
2 - Donna
3 - Martha
4 - Amy
5 - Clara
6 - L
7 - G
8 - B
9 - T
10 - Fuck everything
I was talking mostly of new companions but I love the old ones too. My favorite classic team is actually the original team. The Doctor, Ian, Barbara & Susan. They felt like such a family to me.
just realised that was basically the framework =/
"I saw the Doctor"
"Yes, Donna. You did. And then you forgot."
That's some killer foreshadowing
RIVER m...f... SONG i love her so much
you dont have to worry that you know the end :) because you work up to the start just in the wrong direction xD
Great reaction as always!! Love this episode, always makes me cry at the end 😂😭😂
.
"Why can't we hear these things?
Spoilers
This episode. This one always makes me cry. Not the first time I watched it, but every tine thereafter. When you get to the end of Capaldi's Doctor look and react to a you tube video called River Songs timeline. So good.
Believe me, nothing has been stolen from you in regards to River. She only told about the last time she saw the Doctor, not anything about their story or personalities. Rose is still my favorite companion and River is my favorite character. I love Donna too. I only disliked one companion and that is Martha, her season had several good episodes but I didnt really enjoy her story.
Interesting thoughts.
Same for me except I loved Martha from the beginning.
It's at this point in filming of this season that David announced that he was leaving the show. So Series 5 was initially going to be with the 10th Doctor. Hence River asking about the Crash of the Byzantium from Series 5. It's a funky bit on continuity because of behind the scenes stuff going on. As of last year, I had hoped that the easy fix would be that 14 would meet River, since that would make that line work perfectly fine. Perhaps he did during his rehab time. Maybe one day.
This was a pretty great story. Some quite interesting world building from Moffatt here.
You picked up the Donna time jumps really quick! Its not even really a time jump per say...Doctor Moon tells her something, and it instantly happens, with her brain filling in any blanks
Yep. As he does more than once, Moffat's telling a story about stories in this two-parter IMO, playing around with the fundamentals of narrative (it's set in a globe spanning library - a world of stories - and the villain is literally born in books). As Shayla says, Donna experiences time as _we_ see it, which is to say, disjointed and jumping around _exactly_ the way a TV episode deals with time (when it cuts from scene to scene). When an episode's carrying us with it we fill in the blanks (we kind of mentally assume what happens during the jumps) but when it isn't working as well, when there are "bugs" in the episode, we notice the jumps and start to wonder what's supposed to have happened in between, it stops making sense to us (like the VR for Donna).
And so begins/ends my favorite character arc of all of New Who.
Oh, those questions about River. We were all asking that after this episode! She obviously recognized his face, but knew it was "early days" for him. He is a time traveller-- I think after I saw this ep some of us were speculating that River might know Doctor 24, but run into Doctor 11, 32, and 15 in different orders. She just never saw someone as young as this Ten before. (this was speculation among fans after the ep-- no spoilers). Edit-- I liked Martha but not the "unrequitted love" storyline. I agree-- after her appearance in S4 I really liked her. I guess Russell Davies was going for 1) Rose-- kinda a love story, 2) Martha- unrequitted love, 3) Donna-- close friend/buddy
Interesting thoughts,.
Midnight next, an underrated classic imo.
Iain Hunter-Fennell yeah very creepy too
Arguably RTD's best episode IMO. Dunno how underrated it is though, haven't come across many fans that don't rate it quite highly.
I don't like midnight, when I watch it I find it so boring, but I like watching peoples reactions to it for some reason haha
Yep ;)
You may feel cheated because you've seen how River's story ends - this is the last time she see's the Doctor - but most relationships have only one end and one beginning - this one has two of each, and you've yet to see the end from the other side yet.
River Song, you either love her or you hate her. I personally love her. Her goodbye really gets me. I kind of forgot about her ending over her time on the show, I completely forgot until a certain time.
Hm interesting.
The specials you need to do are the waters of mars and the end of time part 1 + 2
That is what I will do!
@@JustSoShayla The Next Doctor Special is good also. That's the first of the 5 Specials.
My fave Moffat storyline of the Davies era.
Thats the genius of these episodes the whole point was to make us the audience feel the same way as the doctor must feel. Like River is telling the doctor she will one day be someone he cares about and the episode is telling us this will me an important character in the future but because neither we or the doctor KNOW her yet, we can not appreciate the significance of her death yet, which is actually quite ingenious
True. This episode gets me much more emotional now in light of what happens in subsequent seasons.
Interesting stuff, gotta love DW.
No spoilers. River is a queen though.
this show is great, like i always mention pay attention to all details, they will be needed to understand other episodes. i always look forward to your doctor who reactions :D
Thank you :)
Another great reaction Shayla! I loved your confusion, curiosity and excitement for this second part of the story. This is a great two parter. As for the mystery of River...well all I can say is spoilers!😉 Her speech at the conclusion of the episode while The Doctor is saving her and then snapping his finger to open the Tardis doors is absolutely sublime. You probably already noticed but the Everybody Lives moment is a nice callback to the Ninth Doctor. :D I’m so glad you’re reacting to the rest of this season. Broke my heart when Lee couldn’t call out to Donna. The next two weeks are gonna be great! :)
Awesome :)
Wow. I don't know how you can watch this without crying. I tear up every time.
I have to be reallllyy connected to someone to cry.
This show makes me cry repeatedly. But I really love these characters. And I love the actors, too.
I only realized on my second viewing that Dr. Moon is the data moon.
Those two were the best Doctor Who episodes. So much to munch on.
9:20 "This is a good place now". Here is Kirsten Bell and Ted Danson to show you around. 😂😂😂
As for the specials: Waters Of Mars and End Of Time.
Will do!
River Song is going to be epic. ;)
The doctor and river song Saga will continue like Star Wars but awesome
Hey Shayla! Meet River Song. She is glorious!
you ́re gonna love the next season
Martha is a fantastic character, but the doctor mistreated her terribly but because I loved the doctor I disliked Martha until I watched her arc in Torchwood in which I realized I loved her. It’s the doctors obsession with Rose that actually stains seasons 3 and 4. Like he’s 900 years old and he’s obsessed with a 19yo. Refuses to move on from her completely despite having so many companions before her. Like I loved rose, and then I rewatched the show one day and still loved her but kinda got annoyed with how possessive the doctor and rose were of each other after initially being caught up with season 5 before starting over for the first time. I love 10 but his obsession with a 19yo really sours my feelings about him.
Yaayyy!!! Doctorr Whoo Reaction!!!!
Moffat is a genius. Sometimes he is too clever. Not here though....
end of time is maybe the best 2parter coming up
She's brilliant. That's what I just want to say. :D
it's crazy to think that one of the greatest and most influential characters in Doctor Who died in her first appearance.
Get ready: Steven Moffat - as showrunner - will do tougher things than here...
The concept of introducing a character at the end of her story arc is a pretty cool one, even though I'm not personally a big fan of River.
And since you mentioned it, there have been approximately 50 companions so far, and 90% of them are brilliant. (I think Adric is the only one who's _universally_ disliked, but he's way back with the 5th doctor, so you don't have to worry about him).
Don't worry about River Song for the time being, there are far more urgent matters. There have been lots of hints dropped in earlier episodes setting the scene for the upcoming ones which you appear to be oblivious too. I expect a few 'oh crap of course' moments in the near future. I'm so excited for the reaction to 4x11 12 and 13, screw christmas that's what i'm looking forward to lol.
Awww thank you!
I aren't a fan of River Song personally, her storyline is just a bit complicated and not that compelling to me. I'll be interested to see how you react to her in the future! I can't wait for you to react to the next few episodes though :)
anyone else watching this before the rewatch?
The only water in the forest is the river...
Keep this series going
Great reaction:)
River song is "spoilers"
Well, as with all companions You love some, and you hate some, and others are just good.
The End of Time two parter are the ones that are too important to skip. Otherwise, it would be nice to see a reaction to The Waters of Mars but, as good as that episode is, its importance is not even comparable to The End of Time.
I do them all!
@@JustSoShayla Excellent
What I will say is this, your experience with River will likely be different than with any other character, just enjoy the ride.
Hm okay, cool.
You have to rewatch this episode. Now that you know everything
the funny thing is, you watch this and react now. when you get to the end of the story, you will watch this again and cry your eyes out ** SPOLERS**
i think rose is on 3 for me ^^ its
1. still coming for you
2. still coming for you
3. Rose
9:52 Hey! Who turned out the lights?
Awesome reaction 😂 you are right why we can't hear the doctor name !
They would have to rename the show.
This name though...too curious 😂
Because then the name of the show doesn't work
Know that you have seen Rivers story to it's end you should rewatch these episodes.
the end before the beginning? timey-wimey, remember. there are other shows with time travel but this is the only one I can think of that gets away with this. I really liked Catherine Tate in this, although I generally find Donna a bit... angry.
Donna being angry is so...natural and authentic that I love it.
WIBBLY-WOBBLY TIMEY-WIMEY ;)
... and further down the rabbit hole :)
I know you want to get through the seasons to get to present day but I think that if you skip doing some of these episodes, down the road you'll look back and regret it. IMO and many others these few seasons are some of the better ones. Anyways I hope you keep at it. I enjoy watching. Thanks
And currently Dr Who has gone through a 1 year break before this season that only had 10 episodes to it. And now they're saying it's going to be ANOTHER year before they make another "season" So You'll have plenty of time to catch up.
So far no regrets, I have a lot of different people picking the episodes I watch so I am hopeful that I will continue to not regret anything.
I'm glad you're not missing the good ones then. I'd still like it if you did all of them :p but I get it. Easier said then done for sure. Thanks for reading and responding to me. And thank you for the uploading of who reactions!! You are an awesome person.
I would have loved this episode if River Song hadn't been introduced.
I saw the doctor yes you did and then you forgot
Yeah friday
☺️☺️
If you were going to do a female incarnation of the doctor, RIVER SONG should’ve been the first female doctor. Not the doctors wife.
You are now to the reason everyone wanted you to watch and react to every episode. You are in the stretch from when "Doctor Who" becomes the thing we take out of the shadows and bring into the light (Vastha episode, so I had to say this, they may be looking).
This is when most people put the show at the top of their all-time list (of course everyone's opinion is different and that is why we wanted to see when it happened to you)
Not everyone, of course, this is also the time when the contrarians come out and try to ruin it for others, so watch your comment section, you seem pleased, that is not going to fly with some of the fandom that has turned slightly toxic.
From this point out, enjoy the ride, things will either be explained or not, but it is a show about time travel, so there is no such thing as a "plothole" (actually there are three or five or one)
Can't wait for the rest of the ride.
River Song is a hot mess! But it's worth it.
PRAYS TO GOD THAT YOU WILL REACT TO 4x11
Yep :)
I remember when dr who was well written and interesting 😭
K so react to 5x1 5x4 5x5 5x7 to 5x13
Watch you all the time and just saw now that i am not subscribed to u. My bad haha
Thanks haha!
9:07 ... spoilers.
