Very interesting comment that Grandmaster Mattson makes at 5:37 . I read an article many years ago in either Blackbelt magazine or Karate Illustrated that said that many of the masters who practiced dynamic tension sanchin developed high blood pressure and other health problems. Master Kanbum Uechi died at 71, not a ripe old age. I had practiced my sanchin kata with dynamic tension for many years and by my early 40s I had borderline high blood pressure. After reading this article I tried discontinuing the dynamic tension and just practiced sanchin as a kata, not an exercise and after a year or so my blood pressure returned to a normal range. No karate practice should sacrifice health.
Happy Birthday Grandmaster Mattson. Uechi practitioners owe you a huge debt. Glad to see that you're doing well.

That’s bad science. It’s been updated videos on this topic

I'm not saying that my comment was anything other than anecdotal. But in my case it seemed to be a good health decision. If you can post the videos I'd be interested in seeing them. @@EthanNoble

A brilliant and very timely lesson from a Sensei that has clearly devoted his life to the art, so much of what Karateka focus on is the notion that muscular power coupled with explosive speed is the benchmark of "real" Karate. Whilst this is an important stage for a mere mortal such as myself, true longevity in the art is looking deeper and allow certain external affectations to fall away. An inspiring example truly worthy of the title Sensei, thank you for posting, I know I will revise this regularly as training motivation.

THANK YOU so much for posting this. I would love to have gone to Uechi-Con but I film multiple high school sports and of course I had games to film at the same time. The last time I got to go to something like this was Sensei Mattson's 2004 Summerfest.
If I may make one tiny critique... put the camera in manual focus then zoom in on the furthest spot in your view, in this case the wall. When you zoom out and put your focus on your subjects, the video should remain crystal clear and the IR sensor on your camera, not being in auto focus, will not force the camera to keep refocusing. When in auto focus, the slightest thing that gets picked up by the camera's IR sensor is what is causing those momentary out of focus instances.

Chōjun Miyagi of Goju Ryu Karate Do developed the hard dynamic tension sanchin kata as an excersize but when he practiced at home he trained the softer open handed version.

Thanks for posting this LiveDanD. I was not able to attend the event, was the 2nd part of his seminar also recorded? I took Sensei Mattson’s OldWay course and began training with him virtually over 2 years ago. What I have learned from Sensei Mattson during that time has been invaluable. The OldWay is what I’d been searching for in my Uechi for many, many years.

Excellent lecture by Dr. Roy 42:00 The fundamental nuts and bolts--which evolve throughout our sinews and all--are taught through comprehensive martial arts and improve all aspects of our lives: composure, demeanor, morality, etc., as well as our physical abilities. We must retire from baseball, football, etc., but not this. Thank you. Oss! from Brooklyn.
