I am so proud to be part of this organization. The very best in USA . Thanks for the video . I was there for Sensei Buzz Seminar. A great refresher for me.
I'm confused with the belts. I see Mr Durkin wearing 5 stripes on each side (dan level ???) and I saw Mr. James Thompson (10th Dan) wear 3 stripe on each side which was less than Mr. Durkin. Can someone explain the stripe/belt system.... thanks
In Uechi-ryu, the stripes on the belt represent the master title/rank that the practitioner has achieved. The stipes come in pairs (each title/rank has a stripe on both sides of the belt) Traditionally it goes: 1 Stripe: 6th Dan - Renshi 2 Stripes: 7th/8th Dan - Kyoshi 3 Stripes: 9th Dan - Hanshi 4 Stripes: 10th Dan - Hanshi-sei In recent years some groups have added a 5th stripe to easier distinguish between 7th & 8th Dan (both are still considered kyoshi), which it why Mr. Durkin wears five stripes now. I cannot speak for Mr. Thompson as he is not my sensei and I am not part of his group, but I would imagine that he may have decided to not add another stripe on to his belt when he received his 10th Dan or they do the stripes differently. I hope this helps. Thank you for commenting!
I recognized my sensei in sanshin kata front row, from Nancy Gavenda’s dojo, was there late 90s-2000 before moving. Miss it!
