Hey Doctor Jo. I've just subscribed in the hope that you might still be getting notified of questions on this video. I'm finding I'm getting limiting discomfort on the opposite side QL area (perhaps along the iliac crest) to the side which I am stretching when performing these and wondering if you had any idea why that might be?
@@AskDoctorJo I strongly suspect I have SI Joint dysfunction or perhaps some other variety of hip hike. Treatments for this injury have been helpful but not fully restorative. This is what has lead me to QL stretches which again have been helpful but I'm curious about this sensation and what it might mean. It's not a cramp it feels more like a stiffness, immobility or blockage. Similarly I can not raise my leg out laterally very high or get anywhere close to a side split for the same reason. Appreciate the difficulty of trying to assess based on description alone. Was just wondering if it was some obvious/common thing. Thanks.
It could be an SI joint issue. If there is any way you can go get an evaluation from a PT, those are pretty easy to diagnose, and often pretty fixable depending on what specifically is causing it. Good luck!
I was crying and looking for something to help my back pain. I knew that if I found the right muscle anatomically speaking I could possibly find stretches that would help the area. I did these stretches on this video looking for relief after many days of severe pain. I have an egg size/shape knot right above right iliac. I appreciate these stretches! For the person scrolling through these comments in pain, TRY IT!!! 💞
Doctor Jo...after reviewing many videos for helpful back pain stretches, this is the second time that I want to thank you for providing the best information and teaching techniques that I've found anywhere, including at a physical therapy clinic, to actually significantly improve my low back pain problems. As a life-long healthcare professional myself, I really appreciate how focused and easy to follow your RUclips videos are.... great work!
Just went and played football for the first time in well over a year after being in lockdown and was in so much pain & these videos have helped me recover so much, thank you!
for how long you had pain in your ql muscle ? and also Q for Dr Jo , i m driving big semi truck and i have pain in QL area for almost 4 weeks , how long it takes for this muscle to recover if its damaged or streched ? pain is now less but still hurts when i touch it with my hand on the back upper right side ? tnxx
I made a few not-so-smart exercise choices over the past couple of months, and, as such, I had terrible back pain that ran across my hip into my groin and down my thigh. The pain ranged from bad to terrible for over a month, often bordering on excruciating. My doctor ruled out arthritis and recommended physical therapy. Since I knew that was going to be crazy expensive, I took matters into my own hands and began researching what may be wrong, hoping that I had not done irreparable damage. I found a site about the QL muscle, and I had seven of the seven symptoms that could occur if one were having issues with the muscle. I knew immediately that I had diagnosed the issue. My sister found Doctor Jo on RUclips and shared the video with me, and after just one viewing, I felt better than I had in over a month. I have continued to perform the stretches daily for over a week, and my pain is gone! The stretches seem so benign as you do them, but they really release everything they need to in order to have a pain-free body. And as an added bonus, Doctor Jo seems super cool and nice. She certainly knows what she's doing, and I thank her for giving me back a pain-free existence. THANK YOU DOCTOR JO!!!!
Hey Dr Jo, thanks for this vid it was really helpful, honestly couldnt get much of a stretch on most of the positions but the one where you lie on your side shown at 5:10 absolutely nailed the spot for me, best stretch for this muscle and really helped me relieve a lot of tension
You are amazing, I love all your tips and stretches :) As a yoga teacher (biologist by education but not a professional physiotherapist), I often am not sure what to do to help my students who come into yoga for specific aches and pains, and I need to add special positions in yoga flow for them, and your videos are such an inspiration for me and I am even using your sequences in my own practice to deepen poses and release even more, thank you so much, I learn so much from you. Hugs and blessings to you :)
Thank you! I'm glad my videos have helped. I even go to a therapeutic yoga class taught by a friend/past colleague, and go to physical therapy when I need it. Sometimes it's really hard to treat yourself because you can't see everything going on :-) Plus, I love learning new things!

Not sure why, but despite some right side low back pain, I've never really felt most QL stretching techniques. I just googled again and found this video ... Tried them one by one and still wasn't feeling the stretch i wanted... Until the LAST ONE!!! That side lying with the extra press up is the golden ticket!!! Finally!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
That last one was it for me. I have si joint dysfunction both legs and scoliosis (45 thoracic 35 lumbar). This muscle has made life almost unlivable. Once I hit that stretch I finally found how to target it. I can't thank you enough
Thanks! The last one serves great! I have seen a very similar one that needs a proper wall to do the stretch, but this one needs nothing but the floor, even being easier!
Thanks Dr Jo. Feeling so nice after this. Can't tell u how much pain I was in. I play cricket and sudden movement of twist made my QL very sore. I was getting sudden attacking pain from last few days. This does make me feel good. Thanks again. Suhel from NZ

I like sitting down cross legged, have your foot on top of your knee though, the foot thats up, stretch the opposite side while stabilizing yourself with your elbow on the side your foot is on top, your elbow shouldbe in line with your hip. So if you right foot is on top of your left knee, stretch your left side by bringing your left arm overhead like a half rainbow, stabilize on your right elbow, elbow in line with your hip. I find this way to be much easier cause you have a stabilizer
