  • How is CO2 produced in the body?
As a byproduct of cellular metabolism, CO2 is produced by most cells of the human body, but predominantly by the working muscles.
What is the impact of CO2 on breathing?
CO2 drives an increase in ventilation as a response to both peripheral and central chemoreceptors. Peripheral receptors in the Carotid and Aortic bodies sense changes in pH and pCO2, and send signals through the glossopharyngeal nerve to the brain to adjust ventilation in order to tightly control the body’s physiologic pH between 7.35-7.45. Central receptors in the brain are exquisitely sensitive to pCO2 which crosses the blood-brain barrier easily. When higher CO2 is sensed in these receptors, a strong drive to increase minute ventilation occurs rapidly, forcing the Moxy to increase both respiratory frequency and tidal volumes.
What is the impact of CO2 on our physiology?
During exercise, the prime physiologic response to higher levels of CO2 combine to help improve circulation and aid in the removal of CO2 from the body:
Increased cardiac HR and contractile strength, which combine to increase cardiac output
    Peripheral vasodilation
    Bronchodilation
Shifting of the oxygen dissociation curve in teh periphery, reducing the affinity for oxygen, and increasing oxygen delivery to the tissues.
What can we do to modulate CO2 levels during exercise?
Shifting away from autonomic control of respiratory patterns, and controlling both the volume and respiratory frequency, to allow for h controlled hypercapnea may lead to improved performance in specific situations.
    WHAT IS VO2 MASTER?
The VO2 Master Analyzer is the ultimate portable metabolic analyzer. At a weight of 200 grams, the VO2 Master Analyzer provides the best field testing equipment currently available. No tubes, cables or backpacks needed. Testing data is streamed directly to our free mobile app where it can be viewed in real time. Additionally, the app will draw data from a wide variety of other physiologic testing equipment, including HR monitors, Power Meters and Moxy monitors as examples. Test VO2 Max, estimate resting metabolic rate, determine training zones, examine breathing coordination and more. The possibilities for physiologic testing are now endless.

About carbs versus fats in physical ability, I'd love to see research done on different kinds of carbs and fats. Stearic acid and MCTs, for example, increase mitochondrial functioning and fat-burning. Also, it would be interesting to look at cultured fats where it's essentially pre-digested to form smaller fat globules that are broken down easier. I like to snack on cultured ghee, high in sat fats and MCTs, because it melts in my mouth and digests so easily giving quick energy.
