  • DIY sensory toys and sensory play activities for some awesome sensory play you can do at home using nothing more than water beads aka Orbeez and water balloons. Sensory toys are expensive and the demand for more sensory input from our sensory seekers requires a little ingenuity. My daughter with autism spectrum disorder and sensory processing disorder requires sensory input all day long so she assists me in testing these DIY sensory toys. I hope you enjoy another Fathering Autism DIY video. If you have great ideas for DIY sensory toys and DIY sensory play let me know in the comments below. See you next time!

    Hi FatheringAutism! I'm a new subscriber and have been watching some of your current videos, but am currently binge watching all of your videos from oldest to newest!
    I just wanted to comment on this one, because I actually use water beads as one of the things to help with my grief-induced anxiety! I have a big heavy-duty bag of water beads that I keep closed so they don't dry out, and when I want to calm myself down, I can unzip it and just mush my hand around inside it. I was actually doing it during this vid! Abby's really amazing and I just want to say how much I'm enjoying these videos and watching your loving family.

    I seriously need to buy some water beads. I first saw them quite a few years ago at a market. They were used for plants. Now everyone knows about them and it's become a toy, too! Does Abbie like the feel of sand? Like pushing your hand in a tub of sand. That and buttons - buttons feel cool and sound cool, too, but you need a LOT of them.

    I laughed when you said, "Good job, Rockstar". I use the term "rockstar" a lot when I am working with kids.
    I do have a question:
    With the water beads, do you know if there is any issue if they are swallowed? Are they soft enough not to be a choking hazard?

    • @fatheringautism
      @fatheringautism  8 лет назад +7

      Jason Love They are very soft but I think they could still be a choking hazard. The biggest concern is if they are ingested when they are still dry. Once they expand they can clog up the works. They are however nontoxic. It's a hand over hand activity for us without a doubt.

    • @JasonLovesLife
      @JasonLovesLife 8 лет назад

      Very cool. I will give them a try with the kids.

    • @samg6826
      @samg6826 8 лет назад +1

      Jason Love just make sure you supervise very closely because if they are ingested it wont be pretty

    • @fatheringautism
      @fatheringautism  7 лет назад +7

      +Kelly Darroch She mouths most things. Some toys are only played with with direct supervision. Although nontoxic, we don't want her eating waterbeads so we "help" her play with those. One of the most used phrases in our house is "Out of your mouth!"
