- Some of the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol last week wore gear that makes it difficult to identify them, but investigators have zeroed in on a number of clues. John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto's Munk School, joins CBSN to discuss the techniques that helped ID suspects who are now facing charges.

Well... most of the them have phones, and they “ping” the closest celltower ...
that is not enough, by itself. data transmission to a celltower only implies the device is in the general vicinity. there likely is an audit log of the MAC addresses of the devices that attempted to connect to wifi. But, that doesn't imply the device was in the building. wifi signals could make it through the building walls.

My friend was visiting DC, planning to go home the day the riots came. He told me that he saw a group in all black, talking (fairly loudly mind you) about "coordinates" and "positions". He left DC before this all happened.

Capitol Police detained some guy inside the Capitol building briefly. They kept his driving license and told him you are free to go and that they will seek a warrant for his arrest. He was one of the first rioters to be arrested couple of days later.

terrorism is a greater burden on the prosecution. Often, it's better to level slightly lesser charges that the feds can almost guarantee will hold the individual accountable. Once they've gotten many of them, they may begin to deepen investigations and augment charges.

All cellphones , carried by the intruders, if they were on in the Capitol, automatically had their electronic serial numbers registered to the Capitol's cell sites. This can even pinpoint exactly where in the building they were located. Get the names from the carriers and the FBI can arrest them.

Would this apply to no longer being able to use VPN services? Not sure how I feel about all this as so much is not protected anyway, but I understand the potential harms. I got rid of Facebook due to privacy issues and try to use duck duck go as much as possible...

I really don't understand why this all so complicated. We also need to start restricting the sale and purchase of tactical equipment and gear, or instituting a registry with address verification required before shipping. (That's coming from me....a combat veteran).
I don't think you can reverse trace a ping. Usually what they do is check the cell phone pings of a person they suspect so they still need to find out who they are first (I watch a lot of true crime docs 😅)

Are you saying there weren't people there who deserved to be restrained? I wouldn't have been there, but if I had been (let's say as a journalist with a camera) I might have brought zip ties in case they were needed to restrain violent criminals.
It's possible he was using them as cable ties. There's a lot of lightning and communication equipment in this areas, and with all the chaos someone could have tripped over a USB extension. Now would you want to have to tell some children that Daddy can't come home because he face-planted down some marble stairs? No, didn't think so.

Agreed. "Individual" is a perfectly neutral term, and should be the default for journalism. "Person", "Man", "Woman", whatever is just plain and factual. "Gentleman" is way too deferential, and honestly "Terrorist" is technically against our legal code of "innocent until proven guilty", but it's certainly warranted with video evidence already plainly visible.
He is a professional, and pronouncing guilt is opinion or bias and would discredit his factual work. When arrested, you are alleged, it's up to the court to decide guilt or not.
