In 1990 Chris Barber and his Jazz Band celebrated their 40th anniversary and played a series of somewhere between 75 and 100 jubilee concerts all round Europe. Not only would Chris perform with his recent band, he would also make part of the show a feature with members of his early band. In this clip the early band with Pat Halcox and Monty Sunshine plays a version of King Oliver's 1923 band's tune "Chimes Blues".
Instead of the Chimes being done by piano in the original recording Chris performed this with the three frontline horns.
We with Climax Jazz Band copied that arrangement, and I remember very well how tough this part was, I guess especially for the cornet. Therefore it was amazing to see with Chris and the band in this clip that in the second time around the great Pat Halcox on cornet had a little problem as well.

Had the privilege of seeing Chris Barber and his band, he came out during the interval and signed the cds we bought from the stand. He was one of the most approachable "Superstars", i have ever met, it was more like talking to your old dad. What a lovely, personable man.

Brought up with a trombone in my life since birth 1961 my dad was a jazz trombonist his main man was Jack Teagarden. I asked Chris about Jack his answer was two words "A Genius" . I actually played through that mouthpiece he used for years , man it was super sharp on the lips.

I've just come across a book "Hull Jazz and Jazzmen" which my Dad and Aunt and Uncle are in. I have very fond memories of watching many jazz bands in Hull during my childhood and this was one of my favourite "Blind Lemon's East Coast Jazzmen" numbers. They did the same thing with the front line doing the chimes. Ooooh, I'm coming over all emotional now. Bloody lovely stuff and happy times that I miss very much indeed.

I was thrilled, amazed, and surprised when I first saw your Climax band do the chimes thing without piano at an intimate bar gig during Sacto fest in the 80s. I saw you guys do it a few more times after that. Now, this video lets me see it again. In between then and now, I have not seen another band do this. For anyone familiar with Chimes Blues, this is really special. Many thanks - for this vid and for all the joy your band brought back then.

This was in 1994 (not 1990!), celebrating the 40th anniversary of Chris
Barber's professional band which was founded on May 31st 1954. The "1954
band" would play the first half followed by the current band in the
second half. Here we see and hear founding members Chris (tb), Pat
Halcox (tp), Monty Sunshine (cl) and Jim Bray (b). Lonnie Donegan (bj)
was sidelined by a cold for a day or two so Johnny McCallum stepped in.
Original drummer Ron Bowden could not do the whole tour, so here it's
COLIN Bowden who covered parts of it. This was filmed in Rastatt,
    Germany.

Have been a fan over the years of the Dukes of Dixieland's version with real chimes, but really like this amazing arrangement and this wonderful group.
    Thanks so much.
